Bluewater Lake State Park was established in 1955. Bluewater and Cottonwood
Creeks feed the lake. This serene lake, located 25 miles west of Grants, is
set in a pinon-juniper landscape with views towards the 3,000 acres of
wilderness on the north flank of the Zuni Mountains. A forest of cottonwoods,
pinon, and juniper surrounds the lake. From Pinon Hills Campground, take the
trail to the overlook above the historic 1920s Bluewater Creek Dam, which is
an arched concrete dam that was privately built.  
  
Explore the history of Bluewater Lake at the park's Visitor Center where you
will be greeted by park staff and volunteers. Learn about Navajo Native
American culture, history, artifacts and native wild horses. Domestic
horseback riding is allowable throughout the park's 2,500 acres.  
  
Bluewater Lake is internationally recognized for its fishing. Not just any
fishing – you’ll find some of the best Tiger Muskie, Rainbow Trout and Channel
Catfish fishing at Bluewater Lake!

Casamero Pueblo is small Chacoan Outlier located against the majestic backdrop
of the brilliant red sandstone cliffs of Tecolote (Owl) Mesa. Look for the
large "owl's eyes" that give the mesa its name. The pueblo contains 22 ground
floor rooms and may have had six second-story rooms. It was occupied between
A.D. 1000 and 1125 and is an excellent example of a Chacoan Outlier, with
characteristic core-veneer masonry, an associated Great Kiva, and two Chacoan
roads. A collection of 37 known sites is associated with Casamero and includes
numerous small masonry habitation structures. A Chacoan road connects Casamero
to the nearby outlier of Andrews Ranch. Foods grown and pottery produced in
the Casamero community may have been traded to other outliers and to Chaco
Canyon itself. Casamero was excavated between 1966 and 1967 and has since been
completely stabilized so that the Chacoan masonry and the site layout are
clearly visible to the public. Interpretive signs have been placed around the
ruin.

community building that served a number of nearby farmsteads. It was used for
social and religious activities aimed at uniting individual families into a
cohesive community. Casamero (along with Chaco Cultural National Historical
Park and 6 other outliers) is included on the World Heritage List.

American Southwest. Between 700 and 1150 A.D., the Chaco Culture flourished,
with Chaco Canyon serving as the social and religious center of the Northern
Southwest. During the 900s and 1000s, a series of “Chacoan Outliers,”
structures similar to those in Chaco Canyon, was constructed in western New
Mexico, southwest Colorado, eastern Arizona and southeast Utah. Many outliers
were connected to Chaco Canyon or other outliers through a network of
prehistoric roads. The outliers and connecting roads offer a view to an
ancient landscape of astonishing scale and complexity. The Chacoan region, as
defined by the distribution of outliers and Chaco Canyon itself, was
recognized internationally though placement on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
