The Shash Jáa Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) of Bears Ears National

Prominent geologic features in the unit include the Bears Ears Buttes, Comb
Ridge, and Arch Canyon. The deep canyons and towering mesas of the Shash Jáa
SRMA contain abundant cultural resources, including rock writing, remains of
single-family dwellings, granaries, kivas, and towers primarily from the
Pueblo II and III periods, along with sites from the Basketmaker and Archaic
periods. Popular recreation activities include hiking, backpacking, off-
highway vehicle (OHV) touring on designated routes, scenic driving, dispersed
camping, and photography.

structures, including four kivas. This ruin is located in a side canyon of

colorful Cedar Mesa Sandstone has created a layer cake effect of multiple
tiers, especially in the middle and lower sections of the canyon. There are
numerous archaeological sites present. Please take care when visiting these
fragile sites. There are no maintained trails. Routes generally follow the
mostly dry creek bed. There are long stretches of slickrock, with several

classic western landscape with panoramic vistas, towering sandstone cliffs and
spires, and rolling grasslands.

## Overview

The Indian Creek Falls Group Site is ideal for groups wishing to recreate in
the Indian Creek Corridor or to be close to Canyonlands National Park. The
site is situated in a small bowl just above the terrace of Indian Creek.
Except for three Bureau of Land Management developed recreational facilities
and the Dugout Ranch, the Indian Creek Corridor is generally primitive and
undeveloped. The Indian Creek area is a popular filming area because of its
classical western look. Both commercial advertisements and major motion
pictures have been filmed in the area.

extraordinary natural beauty and numerous recreational opportunities.
Spectacular landscapes along with rich archeological resources provide
visitors with an abundance of recreational opportunities. These opportunities
include: hiking, biking, cultural resource viewing, camping, off-highway
vehicle (OHV) use, rock climbing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing,
sightseeing and scenic photography. These features attract visitors from
around the world, who recreate both privately and by hiring commercial
outfitters.

The group site is located near Indian Creek Falls and features tent/trailer
space, picnic tables, a fire ring, and a vault toilet. The site can hold
approximately 10 vehicles, with a vehicle and trailer counting as two
vehicles. There is no water.

## Natural Features

Indian Creek consists of a broad, gently rolling valley bracketed by the
sandstone cliffs of Harts Point to the northeast and Bridger Jack Mesa to the
southwest. The valley is bisected by both the major thoroughfare of Highway
211 and Indian Creek itself. From Highway 211 interior of the valley is a
classic western landscape with panoramic vistas, towering sandstone cliffs and
spires, and rolling grasslands.

San Juan River float trips, or wishing to camp close to the town of Bluff or
the Cedar Mesa area of Bears Ears National Monument. The campground provides
21 campsites that each feature a tent/trailer space, a picnic table, a fire
ring, and vault toilets. Drinking water is available seasonally (typically
March through October). Each campsite can hold 8 people and 2 vehicles.
Reservations are not available for camping at this location. Individual
campsites are available on a first come, first served basis upon arrival at
the self-register kiosk at the site. The Sand Island Group Sites are available
for larger groups, and may be reserved here.

trips. San Juan River trips provide boaters with access to spectacular canyons
rich in scenery, geology, archeology, history and wildlife. A river permit is
required in advance. The Sand Island Petroglyph Panel site is located on the
sandstone walls on the north side of the recreation area. There are many
nearby hiking and scenic driving opportuites in the Cedar Mesa area of Bears
Ears National Monument.

Bears Ears National Monument

Kane Gulch is a tributary and popular access route into Grand Gulch that
starts from Kane Gulch Ranger Station. An easy to moderately difficult trail
gradually descends for four miles to the junction with Grand Gulch. At this
intersection, you can view a cliff dwelling called Junction Ruin. If you
decide to continue, in the next mile you can see Turkey Pen Ruin and Stimper
Arch. From Kane Gulch Ranger Station to Stimper Arch is 10 miles round trip.

Puebloan cliff ruins and rock art in a natural setting. Grand Gulch and its
tributaries feature miles of winding canyons lined with cliffs that provided

Salvation Knoll is a historic site located a few miles off the Hole-in-the-
Rock Trail on Cedar Mesa. This trail was blazed by Mormon pioneers during the
winter of 1879-1880 as they came to settle along the San Juan River. Scouts
exploring in advance of the wagon train through the terribly rugged terrain
became lost and ran out of food as they sought to determine whether the route
was even possible. On a snowy Christmas Day morning in 1879, they climbed what
is now known as Salvation Knoll in search of landmarks. From its top they were
able to see the Blue Mountains off to the northeast, which allowed them to
orient themselves. Subsequently they were able to design a route for the wagon
trail that followed them. Today, a hiking trail accesses the top of Salvation
Knoll, where visitors can enjoy a 360 degree panorama of incredible views.
Round trip to the top is one-half mile.

Bullet Canyon

Slickhorn Canyon on Cedar Mesa is a canyon of many shapes and colors twisted
and carved in eroded reds, browns, and yellows. It is an impressive canyon
with sandstone walls varying in height from 300 feet in the north end to 800
feet as the canyon approaches the San Juan River. Hiking in this canyon is
rugged. The creek channel is frequently clogged with boulders, and there are
many pour offs and steep talus slopes to be negotiated, challenging even the
experienced hiker. A permit to hike or backpack is required.
