## Recreation

Colorado National Monument is famous in cycling communities for its majestic
views and challenging climbs, but Historic Rim Rock Drive is also a popular
motor tour. Hikers flock to the miles of maintained trails, photographers come
year round to capture the spectacular views, and geologists study the unique
landscape for its scientific value. Climbers come for the towering sandstone,
and wildlife lovers may spot Desert Bighorn sheep, golden eagles, collared
lizards, and many other special creatures.

## Facilities

Saddlehorn Campground is located near the Saddlehorn Visitor Center, four
miles from the west entrance (near Fruita, Colorado) and nineteen miles from
the east entrance (near Grand Junction, Colorado), and is the only established
campground within the Monument.

There are 79 campsites with three camping loops within the Saddlehorn
Campground (Loops A, B, and C).

  * **Loop A** is typically open early April through the end of October. Loop A will remain on a "day of" reservation basis for the summer due to need for scheduled maintenance. 
    * All "day-of" reservation sites open at 8AM mountain time on the day of.
  * **Loop B** is open year-round. Outer loop sites are reservable 6 months in advance, inner loop sites are reservable 2 weeks in advance. 
  * **Loop C** is open early May through mid/late October, weather dependent. Sites 52-69 are reservable on a day of basis, while sites 70-80 are reservable up to two weeks in advance.
    * All "day-of" reservation sites open at 8AM mountain time on the day of.

Due to size of the campground, vehicles longer than 40 feet cannot be
accomodated--this includes tow vehicle AND trailer. Restrooms have flush
toilets and water available during the summer, and each site has a picnic
table and charcoal-only grill. There are no electric hookups, fill or dump
stations, or showers.  
  
There are three tunnels on Rim Rock Drive. There are two tunnels on the west
side and one on the east side of the park; the campground sits between the
east and west tunnels. Heights: The clearance above the lanes of traffic
ranges from a low point of 10'6" near the edge of the curb to a maximum of 16'
above the centerline of the road. Vehicles must be able to stay in their lane;
vehicles may not cross the centerline without a pilot vehicle.

juniper trees providing adequate shade. There are spectacular views of the

agricultural attractions, but there are also abundant recreation areas
surrounding the Monument. Among these are McInnis Canyons National
Conservation Area, James M. Robb Colorado River State Park, Highline Lake
State Park, and many Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service areas.

The camping fee is $22.00 per night per site. This is in addition to the
entrance fee to Colorado National Monument. You may pay the fee upon arrival
or in advance. Colorado National Monument also honors valid America the
Beautiful-the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands annual or lifetime
(interagency) passes (e.g., Senior, 4th Grade, Military, etc.),

Access and Senior Pass holders receive a 50% discount for the camping fee (you
must enter a valid pass numner at the time you book and must preset it to
campground staff). You may purchase the passes upon arrival at either entrance
station during Operating Hours.

Rattlesnake and Mee Canyon provide outstanding opportunities for solitude and
primitive recreation. Geologic features in this area include arches, spires,
windows, giant alcoves and desert patina. Between these canyons are pinon-
juniper covered mesas which slope downward to the Colorado River. RATTLESNAKE
ARCHES: A short section connecting the top of the mesa to the bench below the
arches is rocky and steep and requires extra caution - it is not recommended.
From the trailhead travel 0.5 miles to an intersection. To the left takes you
to an area where you can view the arches from above. To the right takes you to
the Lower Arches Trail, which is 5 miles round trip (out and back). In 0.2
miles the trail splits - to the right goes to Pollock Bench Trailhead; stay to
the left for the arches trail. Camping is NOT permitted within 1/4 mile of the
Rattlesnake Arches Loop and along the access road to the trailhead. MEE
CANYON: The trail into Mee Canyon is primitive and only marked with rock
cairns. The route steeply descends sandstone layers with exposed cliffs.
Camping is NOT permitted at the Mee Canyon Alcove. **Leave No Trace
principles:**

The Old House at Peace field is the third stop on the Extended Park Tour. The Old House at Peace field was home to four generations of the Adams family, starting with John and Abigail Adams who moved into the home in 1788.

The Stone Library is the fourth and last stop on the Extended Park Tour. The Stone Library was built in 1870 by Charles Francis Adams to house the personal library of his father, John Quincy Adams.

example, is designed as a practice loop where riders can hone their skills -

## Overview

Five distinct campgrounds within Rabbit Valley were built for different user-
types, from tent camping sites that retain a secluded feel to large group
sites that can accommodate large RVs and trailers. See the “Recreation”
section under the Facility Information tab to find a campground that will meet
your needs. For each campsite, visitors need to read the allowable equipment
section for vehicle length and number limitations for their selected site(s).

Please note, roads are not maintained and can be narrow and rough. Access to
Knowles Overlook is through a dry stream bed and changes quickly with passing
storms. 4-wheel drive and high clearance may be needed to access Knowles
Overlook. The best sites for RVs are the Koniklos (Equestrian) and Fluffle
campgrounds and select High North sites.

Located in western Colorado, the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area
offers stunning views and endless recreational opportunities ranging from
camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-roading. Visit
Rabbit Valley for an amazing outdoor family adventure or to find solitude on
an amazing landscape.

The newly expanded campsites and facilities are located with easy access to
I-70 and within minutes of the City of Fruita and Grand Junction, Colorado for
access to local amenities.

Fees associated with camping are directly invested in the maintenance,
improvements, and development of the Rabbity Valley experience. Reservations
are required for all camping within Rabbit Valley.

## Recreation

Rabbit Valley offers recreational opportunities for every user. Bring your
ATV, motorcycle, mountain bike or horse and enjoy the expansive beauty of
Western Colorado. Enjoy a camping trip with friends or family in the endless
beauty of the canyons.

**Campgrounds by User-Type**

  * Fluffle Campground
    * Groups sites with varying capacities that can accommodate up to five vehicles (see individual campsite descriptions for vehicle limitations).
    * Sites can accommodate vehicles up to 60 feet in length. 
    * There are day-use trailer parking spaces and a 4-pen corral here as well.
  * High North Campground
    * Site one is a group use site that can accommodate vehicles up to 60 feet in length. 
    * Vehicles longer than 50 feet will want to consider approaching the campground from the north via Hwy-6 as the access road from I-70 requires navigating a tight switchback turn. 
    * All other sites can accommodate two vehicles of various lengths, see individual site details for vehicle length limitations. 
  * Koniklos (Equestrian) Campground
    * This campground is intended to be used solely by visitors who visit Rabbit Valley for horseback riding.
    * Each site has an individual corral. There are also 10 day-use parking areas and 2 corrals for day-use.
    * Campsites can accommodate two vehicles up to 60 feet in length.
    * The road to this campsite is through a rocky wash and is not easily accessed by low-clearance vehicles. 
    * Additional day-use parking and horse corrals are available at the Fluffle Campground.
  * Jouflas Campground
    * This campground is intended for tent camping.
    * No group sites. 
    * The campground can not accommodate vehicles longer than 25 feet.
  * Knowles Overlook Campground
    * This campground is intended to be used by tent and 'overland' style campers.
    * Maximum vehicle length is 30 feet - HIGH CLEARANCE AND 4X4 ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. 
    * Be weather weary in visiting this campsite as access is through a wash. 
    * No group sites.

hike the “Trail Trough Time.” Here you can learn about this area’s history and
experience dinosaur bones on the landscape through a self-guided interpretive
hike.

Vegetation here is sparse, with only occasional green-ups and wildflower
blooms following wet weather. Average annual precipitation is less than 10
inches. Temperature extremes range from below zero to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Temperatures are more moderate during the spring and fall.

The Rabbit Valley Area is just west of Fruita CO, which serves as a hub for
outdoor recreation on nearby public lands including the red-rock canyons of
Colorado National Monument, and the rest of the McInnis Canyons National
Conservation Area (MCNCA) - home of the Kokopelli trail system, the Ruby-
Horsethief section of the Colorado River, Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness and
the Rabbit Valley recreation area.

The Monument and MCNCA along with the other public lands surrounding the Grand
Valley - formed by the Colorado River flowing between Palisade to Loma - offer
something for everyone, from scenic drives to hiking, horseback riding,
biking, rafting, rock climbing, wildlife viewing, and off-roading. The Grand
Valley is also well-known for its orchards, vineyards and wineries, and the
distinct and vibrant communities of Palisade, Grand Junction, and Fruita.

<p>Five distinct campgrounds within Rabbit Valley were built for different user-types, from tent camping sites that retain a secluded feel to large group sites that can accommodate large RVs and trailers. See the “Recreation” section under the Facility Information tab to find a campground that will meet your needs. For each campsite, visitors need to read the allowable equipment section for vehicle length and number limitations for their selected site(s).</p>
<p>Please note, roads are not maintained and can be narrow and rough. Access to Knowles Overlook is through a dry stream bed and changes quickly with passing storms. 4-wheel drive and high clearance may be needed to access Knowles Overlook. The best sites for RVs are the Koniklos (Equestrian) and Fluffle campgrounds and select High North sites. </p>
<p>Located in western Colorado, the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area offers stunning views and endless recreational opportunities ranging from camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-roading. Visit Rabbit Valley for an amazing outdoor family adventure or to find solitude on an amazing landscape.   </p>
<p>The newly expanded campsites and facilities are located with easy access to I-70 and within minutes of the City of Fruita and Grand Junction, Colorado for access to local amenities.   </p>
<p>Fees associated with camping are directly invested in the maintenance, improvements, and development of the Rabbity Valley experience.  Reservations are required for all camping within Rabbit Valley.  </p>

<li>Groups sites with varying capacities that can accommodate up to five vehicles (see individual campsite descriptions for vehicle limitations).</li>
<li>Sites can accommodate vehicles up to 60 feet in length. </li>
<li>There are day-use trailer parking spaces and a 4-pen corral here as well.</li>
</ul>
<li>High North Campground</li>
<ul>
<li>Site one is a group use site that can accommodate vehicles up to 60 feet in length. </li>
<li>Vehicles longer than 50 feet will want to consider approaching the campground from the north via Hwy-6 as the access road from I-70 requires navigating a tight switchback turn. </li>
<li>All other sites can accommodate two vehicles of various lengths, see individual site details for vehicle length limitations. </li>
</ul>
<li>Koniklos (Equestrian) Campground</li>
<ul>
<li>This campground is intended to be used solely by visitors who visit Rabbit Valley for horseback riding.</li>
<li>Each site has an individual corral. There are also 10 day-use parking areas and 2 corrals for day-use.</li>
<li>Campsites can accommodate two vehicles up to 60 feet in length.</li>
<li>The road to this campsite is through a rocky wash and is not easily accessed by low-clearance vehicles. </li>
<li>Additional day-use parking and horse corrals are available at the Fluffle Campground.</li>

<li>Jouflas Campground</li>

<li>This campground is intended for tent camping.</li>
<li>No group sites. </li>
<li>The campground can not accommodate vehicles longer than 25 feet.</li>

McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area

The Little Book Cliffs Wilderness Study Area is characterized by gently-
sloping plateaus, various small canyons, and four major canyon systems: Main
Canyon, Coal Canyon, Cottonwood Canyon and Spring Canyon. These four larger
systems are also accompanied by many smaller side canyons. Part of the
southern edge of this WSA is dominated by the 2,000-foot-high face of the Book
Cliffs. A wild horse herd is also present in this area. Cultural values of the
Fremont Culture are found here, as well as several natural bridges and
hoodoos. The outstanding scenic beauty and topographic diversity offer
excellent opportunities for solitude and unconfined recreation. Activities
include hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and photography. Vegetation
consists mainly of sagebrush, rabbitbrush, fourwinged saltbrush, and pinyon-
juniper. Fauna includes wild horses, mule deer, elk, mountain lion, black
bear, wild turkey, gray fox, raccoon, ringtail, squirrel, coyote, great horned
owl, golden eagles, various other raptors, rattlesnake, the collared lizard,
and chukar.

75,439 acres, of which 5,120 are in Utah. Vegetation is relatively sparse with
scattered pinyon-juniper woodland. The area's east-west Black Ridge is
dissected by seven red rock canyons varying in length. These canyons feature
geological characteristics such as spires, windows, giant alcoves and desert
patina. Waterfalls can be found here during spring runoff and after summer
thunderstorms. Deer, mountain lion, desert bighorn sheep, as well as golden
and bald eagles make the area home. Recreational use of the area focuses upon
visiting the canyons in conjunction with calm water float trips through Ruby
Canyon and hiking the canyons to view the arches in Rattlesnake and Mee
canyons. Visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, hunting, backpacking,
and primitive camping, as well as rafting, canoeing and kayaking on the
Colorado River. In 2000 the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness became part of the
now over 109 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System. In
wilderness, you can enjoy challenging recreational activities and
extraordinary opportunities for solitude. In an age of _"...increasing
population, accompanied by expanding settlement and growing
mechanization,..."_ you play an important role in helping to _"...secure for
the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an
enduring resource of wilderness"_ as called for by Congress in the Wilderness
Act of 1964. Please follow the regulations in place for this area, and use
Leave No Trace techniques when visiting to ensure protection of its unique
natural and experiential qualities.
