Welcome to Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge! Located in the towns of
Sudbury, Stow, Maynard and Hudson, and just 20 miles west of Boston, Assabet
River NWR is one of eight national wildlife refuges that comprise the Eastern
Massachusetts National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The lands the refuge consists
of were traditionally hunted and fished by Nipmuc Tribes, later farmed by
colonists, then crossed by railroad and eventually used for military training.
This area was known as the Sudbury Training Annex, part of Fort Devens and the
U.S. Army, until 2000 when over 2,000 acres were transferred to the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, establishing the refuge.

Important habitat types on the refuge, such as freshwater wetlands, oak-pine
forest, and shrubland are crucial to our management of migratory bird
conservation. Many wildlife call Assabet River home including numerous species
of waterfowl and wading birds, songbirds, raptors, American beaver, bobcat,
white-tailed deer, and various reptiles and amphibians.

Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge, is one of the eight refuges that make up the
Eastern Massachusetts National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This land, consisting
of fertile flood plain soils were historically first inhabited by indigenous
peoples of the region, then followed by the colonists and then the U.S. Army.
Starting in 1917 this area was a part of Camp Devens, later to become Fort
Devens. In 1974 after various land transfers, the refuge land was given to the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the Department of Defense.

Within its boundary is a diverse array of habitats beneficial to wildlife,
including wetlands, forested uplands, old fields, oxbow ponds and of course
the Nashua River. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manage the refuge for an
assortment of wildlife species, with special focus on migratory birds.
Specifically, American woodcock and Massachusetts’s threaten Blanding’s turtle
are important species for the refuge. Frequent residents of the refuge include
white-tailed deer, fox, turkey, waterfowl, and various species of insects,
amphibians, and reptiles.

landscape architecture and the nation's foremost parkmaker. Olmsted moved his
home to suburban Boston in 1883 and established the world's first full-scale
professional office for the practice of landscape design. During the next
century, his sons and successors perpetuated Olmsted's design ideals,
philosophy, and influence.

area for Charles I of England. The winding river rambles for 80 miles from its
headwaters, covers an area of over 300 square miles and is the most densely
populated river basin in New England. The area provides for wetlands and
