Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway

The Appalachee Scenic Byway traverses the western end of the Apalachicola National Forest. The flat, grassy savannahs are home to a wide variety of wildflowers such as orchids, sudews, and carnivorous pitcher plants. The byway passes through forests of oak, cypress, and long leaf pine, and is home to several varieties of wildlife, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.

The byway also provides access to several recreation areas, including three campgrounds with restrooms and boat docks. There are many opportunities for hunting, boating, fishing, and wildlife observation.

**Navigating the Byway:** ### Getting to the Byway From Tallahassee, take State Highway 20 westward towards Bristol. In Bristol, turn left on State Highway 12. State Highway 12 becomes the Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway as it enters the Apalachicola National Forest. ### Driving the Byway Starting from the northern border of the Apalachicola National Forest, follow State Highway 12 south. Turn right at the junction of State Highway 379. Proceed southwest on State Highway 379 to the village of Sumatra and the junction with State Highway 65. Turn right onto State Highway 65. Proceeding south, continue to the edge of the Apalachicola National Forest and the end of the Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway.
