## Overview

Alexander Springs Recreation Area is located in the Ocala National Forest near
the beautiful, turquoise waters of Alexander Springs. With forested scenery
and abundant water, the recreation area offers camping, swimming, canoeing,
scuba diving (for certified divers), hiking, birding and wildlife viewing.  
  
The Ocala National Forest, located in north central Florida, spans four
counties and 383,000 acres. It is the southernmost and oldest national forest
east of the Mississippi River, and protects the world's largest contiguous
sand pine scrub forest.

If you are planning to visit the weekend of Memorial Day through Labor Day on
a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, you will be required to obtain a Vehicle
Access Reservation.

## Recreation

Visitors can swim, snorkel and dive year-round in the crystalline waters of
the spring. The spring is the only place in the Ocala National Forest where
scuba diving is permitted, and a broad and naturally gently sloped spring pool
becomes a natural water park where visitors can picnic, swim and play.  

If you are planning to visit the weekend of Memorial Day through Labor Day on
a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, you will be required to obtain a Vehicle
Access Reservation.  
  
Fishing and canoeing are p opular outside the swimming area. Anglers can bring
a rod and reel and head down to one of the platforms along the Timucuan Trail
to drop a line in Alexander Run. Visitors can rent canoes or bring their own
and paddle down Alexander Run into the Alexander Springs Wilderness.  
  
  
Day hikers will appreciate a short interpretive trail on a boardwalk over the
spring and through the palm trees. They can also access two segments of the
1,400-mile Florida National Scenic Trail, which runs through the entire
national forest.

## Facilities

The camping area contains four loops of campsites within an easy walk of the
swimming and picnicking area. The sites are shaded with level parking pads for
RVs and plenty of space for tents. No hookups are available. Restrooms have
flush toilets and showers. Camping necessities and firewood are available at a
small general store.

Alexander Springs is among 27 first-magnitude springs in Florida, and is by
far one of the easiest for visitors to enjoy. The water is a constant 72
degrees and extraordinarily clear with a sandy bottom.  
  
The area is subtropical, surrounded by a floodplain forest of maples, sweet
gum and cabbage palms. Alligators, turtles, deer, raccoons, black bear and
numerous birds make their home in the national forest.

Buck Lake is a group camping facility in the heart of Ocala National Forest in
Florida. Great for family reunions and social gatherings, the campground can
host a group of up to 50 guests along the shores of Buck Lake.  
  
Activities include fishing, boating, picnicking, hiking and simply relaxing
and enjoying the breeze.

The sandy swimming beach provides a great place to relax and picnic. Campers
have access to Buck Lake to enjoy fishing for panfish, bass and crappie, as
well as boating.  
  
Hikers can access a segment of the 1,400-mile Florida Trail via a scenic trail
that loops around the lake for 1.7 miles.

This campground provides primitive camping for groups. Amenities include a
vault toilet, a hand pump for drinking water, six picnic tables and a group
campfire ring. Group get exclusive use of the facility during the reservation.

## Overview

Camel Lake Recreation Area provides a quiet place to relax and take in the
beauty of the longleaf pine forest. Camping, swimming, hiking, and boating
opportunities are all available, focused on the crystal-clear waters of Camel
Lake.

## Recreation

Above the lake's rim, the focal points of this recreation area are the well-
shaded ten-site campground, suitable for RVs or tents, and the day use
recreation area with its picnic tables, picnic shelter, and sandy beach for
swimming. A short loop trail surrounds the lake, with longer loops possible
incorporating the nearby Florida National Scenic Trail.

## Facilities

Some of the campsites have electricity, and there is a bathhouse with flush
toilets in the campsite and in the day-use area. A campground host is always
available. The day-use parking lots, picnic areas, and restrooms are
accessible. Hours of operation through the summer are 8 am to 8 pm (April 1st
- Oct 31st) and through the winter are 8 am to 6 pm (Nov 1st - March 31st).

## Natural Features

The Apalachicola is one of the most bio diverse places in the world, and Camel
Lake places you in the middle of this natural treasure. You will be surrounded
by tall longleaf pines and wiregrass, while seepage slopes in the forest
create pitcher plant bogs. Rare pine savannahs are just to the south and the
creeks and swamps around host a wide variety of animal life.

## Nearby Attractions

Nearby, several boat landings provide access to the numerous creeks that feed
into the Apalachicola River. The Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway and the Big
Bend Scenic Byway provide beautiful views of pine savannahs, and they make
excellent routes for trips down to the coast, which is only about an hour
south.

Clearwater Lake Recreation Area offers a quiet getaway along the southeastern
edge of the Ocala National Forest, just outside the community of Paisley,
Florida. With a shaded campground, day use picnic area, beach and a nature
trail that winds through the pine woods and scrub around Clearwater Lake, this
facility has plenty of activities to keep campers occupied.

Doe Lake is a group campsite with a variety of activities. Centered around a
historic lodge with a large group kitchen, it's an ideal place for major
outdoor gatherings of up to 250 people. The site is a favorite among

showers and flush toilets, a large picnic shelter, and potable water. Bear-

beauty from your own private beach. Your campsites are surrounded by tall
pines and cypress draped in Spanish moss. Wildlife sightings abound.

Olustee Beach, with a large day use area, swimming beach, and boat ramp, is
right next door. Ocean Pond is a large freshwater lake excellent for fishing
and boating. Twenty-two miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail wind
through the Osceola National Forest. Make sure to visit the Olustee
Battlefield, site of the largest Civil War battle in Florida.

## Overview

Juniper Springs Campground is one of the most popular campgrounds in the Ocala
National Forest. The location offers deeply shaded sites within walking
distance of some of Florida's most beautiful natural springs. The surrounding
recreation area has plenty of activities to entertain visitors, including
swimming, picnicking, canoeing, snorkeling, hiking, birding and wildlife
viewing.  
  
This campground was named one of Reserve America's Top 100 Family Campgrounds
in the United States.

## Recreation

Visitors love swimming in a 72-degree, natural pool found in the day use area.
Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it is more developed with a
pool-like look.

Paddling Juniper Run is also extremely popular year-round. Juniper Run is
recognized as one of the top 25 canoe runs in America by ReserveAmerica. This
7-mile waterway winds through a scenic landscape, surrounded by a dense canopy
of ancient trees in an old-growth forest.

While the journey offers picturesque scenery, it's important to highlight that
**Juniper Run is not suitable for beginners due to its challenging course and
changing conditions**. The run travels through a National Wilderness Area, and
as defined in The Wilderness Act of 1967 Section 4(c): "There shall be no use
of motor vehicles, motorized equipment, or motorboats, no landing of aircraft,
no other form of mechanical transport, and no structure or installation within
any such area." So, clearing the run is limited to hand tools only. The run
often has hazards overhead and underwater that make navigation difficult -

statewide Florida National Scenic Trail, or walk a shorter nature trail within

14 - 120 are dispersed camping anywhere in the middle island.

Tent and small trailer camping is available within the pine forest along the
western shore of Lake Delancy. All sites are within close proximity to the OHV
corral, the Ocala North OHV Trail System and the Florida Trail. Heads up:
Bears do frequent this area. You are required to store your food in a bear-
proof container or in your vehicle.

Lake Dorr Cabin is set along the south shore of beautiful Lake Dorr, ideal for
a family getaway. The cabin is open year-round and creates a great setting for
plenty of outdoor water fun. The rental includes a private boat ramp, canoes
and a fishing dock. It's located just over an hour from popular amusement
parks and other exciting attractions in Orlando.  
  
The cabin entrance and bathroom is accessible. A flat section on the property
fits two tents if guests wish to camp outside.

## Recreation

Boating, skiing, jet skiing, fishing and swimming are among the most popular
activities for guests. The abundance of largemouth bass, crappie and pan fish
entice anglers.  
  
A private boat ramp, fishing dock, picnic table, grill and three canoes with
life vests are provided.

## Facilities

Lake Dorr Cabin is a modern, newly restored facility with polished hardwood
floors and large windows that overlook the lake. The cabin sleeps 10 guests,
with a queen bed in one bedroom, two sets of bunk beds in the other bedroom
and two sleeper sofas in the living room. Electricity and drinking water are
available, along with a flush toilet and hot shower. Modern amenities in the
kitchen include a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and electric stove.

The cabin rests on the south shores of the lake, with shady Palmetto palms and other tropical vegetation. Views of Lake Dorr, which spans 1,760 acres, are impressive from the cabin grounds.

Altoona lies directly south of Lake Dorr, with gas stations and conveniece stores. Umatilla is a little farther south, offering grocery stores and pharmacies.

The cabin is about 50 miles from Daytona Beach to the east and the city of Orlando to the south. Both trips take just over an hour and offer many opportunities for entertainment.

## Overview

Lake Shore Group Campground sits on the north shore of Fore Lake in Ocala
National Forest. It is a favorite for scout, church and civic groups, as well
as large families and reunions.

## Recreation

Fore Lake is an excellent spot for birding. Visitors can also picnic and fish
along the shore. Campers who wish to venture out into the water can launch
their electric-motor boats, canoes and kayaks from the facility's boat ramp.  
  
Swimming is allowed, but campers should be aware that there are alligators in
this lake.

## Facilities

Lake Shore Group Camp is for tent camping, however RVs are allowed in the
small parking area. The site can accommodate up to 50 guests and there are
campsites in the shade and in the sun, all within sight of the lake. The
centerpiece of the facility is the large accessible picnic shelter, perfect
for group gatherings. A group grill, picnic tables and a restroom with showers
and flush toilets are available.  
  
The lake is situated in the historic community of Scrambletown, which has a
store.

Located in north central Florida, the Ocala National Forest spans four
counties and 383,000 acres. It is the southernmost and oldest national forest
east of the Mississippi River and protects the world's largest contiguous sand
pine scrub forest.  
  
Lined by marshes, the 12-acre Fore Lake is home to many species of birds. The

Mill Dam Group Campground offers a fun and relaxing setting for groups of up
to 150 to enjoy Ocala National Forest. Large picnic shelters and access to
outdoor and water recreation make this area ideal for family reunions and
other large parties.

The campground sits along the 168-acre Mill Dam Lake, and water activities are
popular among campers and day-use visitors.  
  
Anglers come from all over to enjoy bass fishing. Campers can bring their
boats, canoes and kayaks for easy access to the water via an adjacent boat
ramp.  
  
A large swimming beach and picnic area are great ways to keep the kids
entertained.

## Facilities

In the spring, summer and early fall, Mill Dam is a day-use area only. For the
remainder of the year, it becomes a group campground and recreation area for
both day-use and tent camping.  
  
Amenities include a picnic shelter, group grills, picnic tables and flush
toilets. The parking lot can hold up to 70 vehicles.  
  
A boat ramp adjoins the recreation area, on a separate entrance.

Situated in Baker County, Florida, this campground includes 64 campsites and
is open 24 hours/day. Seven are available for reservation, and the remaining
sites are available first-come, first-served at Recreation.gov. There's
something here for everyone in this lakeside campground. The Florida National
Scenic Trail provides hiking opportunity adjacent to this campground. Come
play, fish, swim, view wildlife and enjoy the outdoors here on the north shore
of Ocean Pond!

## Recreation

Boating is very popular on Ocean Pond, and multiple campsites provide lakeside
access for swimming, boating, and fishing. Speckled perch and largemouth bass
are popular targets for anglers. A boat ramp is also available here. A picnic
pavillion area includes a BBQ grill and picnic tables, a swingset, and beach
area for swimmers. The Florida National Scenic Trail traverses the entrance
road to this campground, and is maintained annually for hikers. Public hunting
is available 8 months of the year on Osceola Wildlife Management Area (see
myfwc.com/hunting for more information). The use of Off-Highway Vehicles
(OHVs) is prohibited inside this campground, but many "mixed use" OHV roads
are open for riding on this forest.

Each of these 64 campsites includes one parking slip (large enough for most
RVs), a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Each campsite in the
Electric Section includes a potable water spigot and electric hookup (30- and
50-amp). Each campsite in the Water Section includes a potable water spigot.
Electric and Water Section bath houses include flush toilets and hot showers
(available to campers from any campground section). The Primitive Section
restroom includes flush toilets and sinks but no showers. Primitive Section
campsites do not include water or electric service, but potable water is
available near this section's restrooms. A boat ramp, picnic pavillion, beach
swim area, and RV dump station are available for all campers at no extra
charge.

This campground is situated on the north shore of Ocean Pond, a large lake
(2-mile diameter) popular with boaters, swimmers, and anglers. The campground
perimeter is composed of pine flatwoods and cypress wetlands.

site of the historic Battle of Olustee. This Civil War battle is reenacted
right here on Osceola National Forest each February during the annual Olustee
Festival. Dining, shopping, entertainment, and mail and medical services are
available in Lake City, a 20-minute drive from this campground. The cities of
Gainesville and Jacksonville, Florida and Valdosta, Georgia are within driving
distance (about 1 hour drive), as well as multiple first-magnitude freshwater
springs (Alachua and Gilchrist Counties). The annual National Hot Rod
Association's Gatornationals race takes place each March in Gainesville.

site is popular for groups, family reunions and weddings and can accommodate
up to 125 guests.

on a warm day. A large field offers ample space for activities such as
softball, volleyball and horseshoe tossing.

through floodplain forests and pine flatwoods on the St. Francis Trail, or
head to the river to canoe, kayak or fish for bass.

## Facilities

All new facilities are the highlight of the River Forest Group Site.
Facilities include a screened pavilion for food preparation and cooking with
your own cook stoves. A new bathhouse has also been built on site.  
  
The camping area is flat for tents with some shade provided by trees. While
RVs are welcome, there are no hookups and all vehicles must remain in the
designated parking area. Grills and picnic tables are provided.

## Overview

Salt Springs Recreation Area is one the recreational jewels of the Ocala
National Forest, with a spectacular natural mineral spring that gives the area
its name. Plenty of outdoor activities keep campers and day-use visitors busy,
including swimming in the springs, fishing, snorkeling, hiking and boating.
Salt Springs is located between the St. Johns and Ocklawaha Rivers, 35 miles
east of Ocala, Florida.  
  
The national forest spans four counties and 383,000 acres. It is the
southernmost and oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River, and
protects the world's largest, contiguous sand pine scrub forest.

## Recreation

The natural springs, nearby Lake George and many surrounding rivers and
streams provide ample opportunity for water recreation. Anglers can try a good
fishing spot on Salt Springs Run, downstream of the swimming area, boat ramp
and marina. Boat rentals are nearby.  
  
For those who wish to explore on land, the facility has basketball courts and
a horseshoe pit. Hikers have easy access to the Bear Swamp Trail and a segment
of the 1,400-mile Florida National Scenic Trail.

## Facilities

Salt Springs is the largest campground in the Ocala National Forest and the
only one with full hookups for RVs. The facility offers spacious campsites for
RVs and trailers, as well as a designated tent-only area, which is a short
walk from the parking area. Sites are nicely shaded and well away from the
busy day-use area.  
  
The recreation area and campground are located in the community of Salt
Springs, which has a gas station, grocery store, several restaurants, bait and
tackle shops, a post office, laundromat and visitor center.

## Natural Features

The semi-tropical region gives the campground a mixture of pines and palms,
with lush greenery and warm temperatures. Within the recreation area, a
natural spring rises from cracks deep within the earth. The presence of
potassium, magnesium and sodium salts give the waters a slight salinity -
hence the name Salt Springs.

Salt Springs is very close to Lake George, a great fishing destination.

Salt Springs is located between the St. Johns and Ocklawaha Rivers, 35 miles east of Ocala, Florida.

The national forest spans four counties and 383,000 acres. It is the southernmost and oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River, and protects the world's largest, contiguous sand pine scrub forest.<h2>Recreation</h2>
The natural springs, nearby Lake George and many surrounding rivers and streams provide ample opportunity for water recreation. Anglers can try a good fishing spot on Salt Springs Run, downstream of the swimming area, boat ramp and marina. Boat rentals are nearby.

For those who wish to explore on land, the facility has basketball courts and a horseshoe pit. Hikers have easy access to the Bear Swamp Trail and a segment of the 1,400-mile Florida National Scenic Trail.<h2>Facilities</h2>
Salt Springs is the largest campground in the Ocala National Forest and the only one with full hookups for RVs. The facility offers spacious campsites for RVs and trailers, as well as a designated tent-only area, which is a short walk from the parking area. Sites are nicely shaded and well away from the busy day-use area.

The recreation area and campground are located in the community of Salt Springs, which has a gas station, grocery store, several restaurants, bait and tackle shops, a post office, laundromat and visitor center.<h2>Natural Features</h2>
The semi-tropical region gives the campground a mixture of pines and palms, with lush greenery and warm temperatures. Within the recreation area, a natural spring rises from cracks deep within the earth. The presence of potassium, magnesium and sodium salts give the waters a slight salinity - hence the name Salt Springs.
