## Overview

Alexander Springs Recreation Area is located in the Ocala National Forest near
the beautiful, turquoise waters of Alexander Springs. With forested scenery
and abundant water, the recreation area offers camping, swimming, canoeing,
scuba diving (for certified divers), hiking, birding and wildlife viewing.  
  
The Ocala National Forest, located in north central Florida, spans four
counties and 383,000 acres. It is the southernmost and oldest national forest
east of the Mississippi River, and protects the world's largest contiguous
sand pine scrub forest.

If you are planning to visit the weekend of Memorial Day through Labor Day on
a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, you will be required to obtain a Vehicle
Access Reservation.

## Recreation

Visitors can swim, snorkel and dive year-round in the crystalline waters of
the spring. The spring is the only place in the Ocala National Forest where
scuba diving is permitted, and a broad and naturally gently sloped spring pool
becomes a natural water park where visitors can picnic, swim and play.  

If you are planning to visit the weekend of Memorial Day through Labor Day on
a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, you will be required to obtain a Vehicle
Access Reservation.  
  
Fishing and canoeing are p opular outside the swimming area. Anglers can bring
a rod and reel and head down to one of the platforms along the Timucuan Trail
to drop a line in Alexander Run. Visitors can rent canoes or bring their own
and paddle down Alexander Run into the Alexander Springs Wilderness.  
  
  
Day hikers will appreciate a short interpretive trail on a boardwalk over the
spring and through the palm trees. They can also access two segments of the
1,400-mile Florida National Scenic Trail, which runs through the entire
national forest.

## Facilities

The camping area contains four loops of campsites within an easy walk of the
swimming and picnicking area. The sites are shaded with level parking pads for
RVs and plenty of space for tents. No hookups are available. Restrooms have
flush toilets and showers. Camping necessities and firewood are available at a
small general store.

## Natural Features

Alexander Springs is among 27 first-magnitude springs in Florida, and is by
far one of the easiest for visitors to enjoy. The water is a constant 72
degrees and extraordinarily clear with a sandy bottom.  
  
The area is subtropical, surrounded by a floodplain forest of maples, sweet
gum and cabbage palms. Alligators, turtles, deer, raccoons, black bear and
numerous birds make their home in the national forest.

Big Bass Campground (FL)

Situated in the Osceola National Forest, the Big Camp Hunt Camp is the perfect
location to get back to nature. Enjoy this primitive camping area on the north
edge of the Big Gum Swamp Wilderness.

**Camping**

  * This area is a perfect and spacious location for larger hunting groups or just individuals trying to catch their game. 

**Big Gump Wilderness Area Information**

This large, nearly level area consists primarily of a poorly drained to very
poorly drained freshwater swamp of cypress and gum. The surface is a thick,
spongy mat of organic material, sluggishly cut by a few shallow sloughs.
Longleaf and slash pine flatwoods with a dense understory of saw palmetto,
gallberry and bay form the perimeter of the swamp. Loggers made off with most
of the original timber between 1915 and 1920, and earthen railroad trams, some
of which are still visible, penetrated the interior. Over time, all signs of
human intrusion into the swamp have greatly subsided. However, you might find
remnants of naval stores or "turpentining" operations that began in the area
in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

**Backpacking/Hiking**

  * A designated hiking trail makes a loop through the drier pine flatwoods of the perimeter on the west-northwestern side. Boggy terrain, dense vegetation, insects and warm, humid conditions make travel here extremely challenging - exacerbated by the fact that the trails are not maintained (your best bet is to follow one of the many old logging roads). On the northwest side, an old road tunnels through a stand of massive live oaks that tower overhead.

Buck Lake is a group camping facility in the heart of Ocala National Forest in
Florida. Great for family reunions and social gatherings, the campground can
host a group of up to 50 guests along the shores of Buck Lake.  
  
Activities include fishing, boating, picnicking, hiking and simply relaxing
and enjoying the breeze.

## Recreation

The sandy swimming beach provides a great place to relax and picnic. Campers
have access to Buck Lake to enjoy fishing for panfish, bass and crappie, as
well as boating.  
  
Hikers can access a segment of the 1,400-mile Florida Trail via a scenic trail
that loops around the lake for 1.7 miles.

## Facilities

This campground provides primitive camping for groups. Amenities include a
vault toilet, a hand pump for drinking water, six picnic tables and a group
campfire ring. Group get exclusive use of the facility during the reservation.

Camel Lake Recreation Area provides a quiet place to relax and take in the
beauty of the longleaf pine forest. Camping, swimming, hiking, and boating
opportunities are all available, focused on the crystal-clear waters of Camel
Lake.

## Recreation

Above the lake's rim, the focal points of this recreation area are the well-
shaded ten-site campground, suitable for RVs or tents, and the day use
recreation area with its picnic tables, picnic shelter, and sandy beach for
swimming. A short loop trail surrounds the lake, with longer loops possible
incorporating the nearby Florida National Scenic Trail.

## Facilities

Some of the campsites have electricity, and there is a bathhouse with flush
toilets in the campsite and in the day-use area. A campground host is always
available. The day-use parking lots, picnic areas, and restrooms are
accessible. Hours of operation through the summer are 8 am to 8 pm (April 1st
- Oct 31st) and through the winter are 8 am to 6 pm (Nov 1st - March 31st).

The Apalachicola is one of the most bio diverse places in the world, and Camel
Lake places you in the middle of this natural treasure. You will be surrounded
by tall longleaf pines and wiregrass, while seepage slopes in the forest
create pitcher plant bogs. Rare pine savannahs are just to the south and the
creeks and swamps around host a wide variety of animal life.

## Nearby Attractions

Nearby, several boat landings provide access to the numerous creeks that feed
into the Apalachicola River. The Apalachee Savannahs Scenic Byway and the Big
Bend Scenic Byway provide beautiful views of pine savannahs, and they make
excellent routes for trips down to the coast, which is only about an hour
south.

Camel Lake Campground

The Centennial Trailhead provides parking and northern access to the 47-mile
Ocala Centennial Trail. Various sites and facilities are located along the
trail. At Blue Sink and Farles Prairie, visitors can take a break from riding
and enjoy some fishing, wading, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. Special OHV
parking corrals are located periodically along the trail so riders can stop at
the day-use recreation sites and at Big Scrub Campground. Corrals are only for
parking, not for loading and unloading trailered vehicles.

This trailhead provides access to trails for ATVs, UTVs and motorcycles.

**OHV Riding  **

  * To ride our OHV trails, you'll need a pass and safety gear. Riders under 16 must pass an online course. Our OHV web page has all the information you need for a safe, enjoyable trip. 

**Camping - Dispersed/Primitive Camping **

  * Many people enjoy this solitude and primitive experience, but knowing your limits, skills and abilities is a must. Following certain rules and regulations will help make your experience safer and ensure settings remain unspoiled.

Clearwater Lake Recreation Area offers a quiet getaway along the southeastern
edge of the Ocala National Forest, just outside the community of Paisley,
Florida. With a shaded campground, day use picnic area, beach and a nature
trail that winds through the pine woods and scrub around Clearwater Lake, this
facility has plenty of activities to keep campers occupied.  
  
The Ocala National Forest, in north central Florida, spans four counties and
383,000 acres. It is the southernmost and oldest national forest east of the
Mississippi River, and protects the world's largest, contiguous sand pine
scrub forest.

## Recreation

The abundant water in the area offers many opportunities for recreation. In
addition to swimming in the lake, a 7-mile canoe trail meanders not far from
Clearwater Lake. Canoe rentals are available at the campground. Campers can
fish for largemouth bass, brim or catfish. Hikers have access to the
Clearwater Lake Loop Trail, a 1.3-mile nature trail; a segment of the
1,400-mile Florida National Scenic Trail; and mountain bikers can ride the
Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail, a 22-mile forested path. This is bear country;
practice safe food storage techniques. It is also alligator country; practice
caution around water.

a former steamboat stop along this twisting, winding waterway. Three primitive
campsites provide a stop for paddlers working their way along the river.

**Fishing**

  * Sitting along the Ocklawaha River, this is the perfect location to cast a line from the shallows for a chance to catch that big one. Just keep an eye out for any alligators that may be roaming the area. 

**Hiking**

  * The Davenport Landing Trail is a 0.6-mile interpretive walk to a former steamboat landing along the Ocklawaha River (1.2 mile round-trip). Since it is within the river's floodplain area, expect a high concentration of mosquitoes and dress / prepare accordingly.

**Interpretive Area  **

  * In addition to leading you to the site of a historic steamboat landing, interpretive information along the Davenport Landing Trail includes middens along the Ocklawaha River from the Timucuan period as well as a Civil War-era gravesite.

**Primitive Camping  **

  * Three primitive sites, maximum 15 people total (five per campsite). Four-day stay limit. Primitive campsites can be used by individuals camping with tents or any motorized vehicle. These specific areas in the forest offer no facilities.

  * While any motorized vehicle is permitted in these primitive campsites, not all areas are accessible by all types of vehicles. Sandy and narrow woods roads may make navigation difficult or impossible for some vehicles. Visitors should treat these roads with cautious respect.

historic lodge with a large group kitchen, it's an ideal place for major
outdoor gatherings of up to 250 people. The site is a favorite among

Group Landing is a secluded area that offers a flexible space accommodating
many outdoor activities, from a weekend family camping trip to a midweek
company picnic.

## Recreation

Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and more are easily accommodated. A
private sand beach gives a great venue for relaxing by the water or swimming
in its cool waters. It's easy to shore launch a small boat, canoe, or kayak,
and a boat ramp at Olustee Beach nearby can handle larger craft.

## Facilities

The site includes four electric hookups, an accessible bathhouse with hot
showers and flush toilets, a large picnic shelter, and potable water. Bear-
proof garbage cans, picnic tables, a large grill, and a fire pit are also
provided.

## Natural Features

Situated on the shore of Ocean Pond, you can relax and admire the tranquil
beauty from your own private beach. Your campsites are surrounded by tall
pines and cypress draped in Spanish moss. Wildlife sightings abound.

Olustee Beach, with a large day use area, swimming beach, and boat ramp, is
right next door. Ocean Pond is a large freshwater lake excellent for fishing
and boating. Twenty-two miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail wind

Battlefield, site of the largest Civil War battle in Florida.

Olustee Beach, with a large day use area, swimming beach, and boat ramp, is right next door. Ocean Pond is a large freshwater lake excellent for fishing and boating. Twenty-two miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail wind through the Osceola National Forest. Make sure to visit the Olustee Battlefield, site of the largest Civil War battle in Florida.

Juniper Springs Campground is one of the most popular campgrounds in the Ocala
National Forest. The location offers deeply shaded sites within walking
distance of some of Florida's most beautiful natural springs. The surrounding
recreation area has plenty of activities to entertain visitors, including
swimming, picnicking, canoeing, snorkeling, hiking, birding and wildlife
viewing.  
  
This campground was named one of Reserve America's Top 100 Family Campgrounds
in the United States.

## Recreation

Visitors love swimming in a 72-degree, natural pool found in the day use area.
Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it is more developed with a
pool-like look.

Paddling Juniper Run is also extremely popular year-round. Juniper Run is
recognized as one of the top 25 canoe runs in America by ReserveAmerica. This
7-mile waterway winds through a scenic landscape, surrounded by a dense canopy
of ancient trees in an old-growth forest.

While the journey offers picturesque scenery, it's important to highlight that
**Juniper Run is not suitable for beginners due to its challenging course and
changing conditions**. The run travels through a National Wilderness Area, and
as defined in The Wilderness Act of 1967 Section 4(c): "There shall be no use
of motor vehicles, motorized equipment, or motorboats, no landing of aircraft,
no other form of mechanical transport, and no structure or installation within
any such area." So, clearing the run is limited to hand tools only. The run
often has hazards overhead and underwater that make navigation difficult -

statewide Florida National Scenic Trail, or walk a shorter nature trail within
the facility. Interpretive programs are available during summer months.

equipped with a picnic table, grill, campfire ring, lantern post and space for

palms and oaks - an oasis within the heart of the desert-like Big Scrub

black bear, turkey, raccoons and numerous species of birds, as well as
uncommon species like the albino gray squirrel, river otters and American

a family getaway. The cabin is open year-round and creates a great setting for
plenty of outdoor water fun. The rental includes a private boat ramp, canoes
and a fishing dock. It's located just over an hour from popular amusement
parks and other exciting attractions in Orlando.  
  
The cabin entrance and bathroom is accessible. A flat section on the property
fits two tents if guests wish to camp outside.

## Recreation

Boating, skiing, jet skiing, fishing and swimming are among the most popular
activities for guests. The abundance of largemouth bass, crappie and pan fish
entice anglers.  
  
A private boat ramp, fishing dock, picnic table, grill and three canoes with
life vests are provided.

floors and large windows that overlook the lake. The cabin sleeps 10 guests,

available, along with a flush toilet and hot shower. Modern amenities in the
kitchen include a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and electric stove.

The deposit is for security and shall be refunded within 60 days of the Check-
out Date, provided the following has not occurred:

  * Damage caused to the property or furnishings
  * Removal of furnishings or non-consumable items
  * Violation of any rules for site and forest
  * Dirt or mess requiring excessive cleaning, or
  * Any other cost incurred by the Business due to Guest’s stay.

A massive patch of blue in a sea of green - that's Lake Dorr, one of the
prettiest big lakes in the Ocala National Forest. Experience outdoor
recreation at either the Lake Dorr Recreation Area - campground or day use -
or by renting the cabin for your family or group. Along the northwest shore of
the lake, the recreation area is set under the deep shade of an oak hammock.
Offering RV camping, we also have a boat ramp and picnic area overlooking the
view.
