## Overview

Big Meadows Horse Camp is located 23 miles south from Idanha, Oregon, at an
elevation of 3,600 feet of of Big Meadows Road (Forest Service Road 2267). Big
Meadows Road is paved, but most access roads and travel surfaces throughout
campground and in the adjacent forest are compacted rock.

There are 9 camping units that can accommodate vehicles and trailers up to 36
feet in length. Each site has a picnic table. There are two single-vault
toilets and stock amenities including 4-stall corrals or highlines in each
campsite, hitching rack, loading ramp, and stock water trough. Drinking water
is available via hand pump.

This location has 6 reservable sites and 3 sites which are on a first-come,
first-served basis only.

Campfires allowed until and unless otherwise posted. Fire bans are common
during summer months. Please plan accordingly.

First-come first-served sites shall be paid with Scan and Pay; Scan and Pay
campground. There are no refunds, modifications, cancellations, or other fee
changes allowed with Scan and Pay payments. This system is the same as putting
cash into a fee tube and cannot be refunded. You will need to download the
Rec.Gov app, prior to arriving at the campground as some remote area have
limited or no cellular service.

Reservations for this site can be made up to 6 months in advance of arrival
date by reserving online at RECREATION.GOV or by calling 877-444-6777.

**Lost Lake Campground is adjacent to Highway 20 near the summit of Santiam
Pass in the Willamette National Forest.** This campground is **not** Lost Lake
Resort in the Mt. Hood National Forest. This rustic campground is located on
the west shore of shallow Lost Lake. The water level of the lake fluctuates
seasonally and is quite low in summer with water loving willows crowding the
marshy shallows of the lake. This is a popular spot during fishing and hunting
seasons.

This campground has 15 single campsites. Trailers are not recommended at this

## Overview

The Fish Lake Remount Depot Cabins sit at an altitude of 3,200 feet near the
Santiam Pass Winter Recreation Area of the Willamette National Forest. These
cabins were built in 1924 and are rustic, historic wood structures that
include a dispatcher's cabin, a springhouse shed, a garage/woodshed and a fire
hose shelter. The commissary cabin and a supervisor's cabin, known as the Hall
House, are available as rentals either separately or together. The compound
was once used to house firefighters and corral horses. It is still used as a
rest and resupply station by the Forest Service horse packer heading in and
out of Wilderness areas. Guests must walk, cross-country ski or snowshoe
approximately one mile to access the cabins from Lava Lake Sno-Park.

## Recreation

Seven Sno-Parks are within the Santiam Pass Recreation Area, a 15-minute drive
from the the cabins, including Lava Lake Sno-Park and Ray Benson Sno-Park.
These Sno-Parks offer access to both motorized and non-motorized trail
opportunities.

## Facilities

Two cabins are available for rental at this site from winter through early
spring. The Hall House is a 3-room cabin featuring 1 bedroom, a shared common
room with a hideaway bed, and a kitchen. The Commissary Cabin features a
bedroom and kitchen. Both cabins have the same amenities, which include a
full-size bed with mattress, table with chairs, sofa, propane heating and
cooking stoves, solar-powered lighting, basic cookware and kitchen utensils.
An outhouse with pit toilet is located nearby. Neither cabin has water or
electricity. Guests must bring their own water for drinking, cooking and
washing. Items such as bedding, lanterns or flashlights, matches, extra toilet
paper, first aid supplies, trash bags, dish soap, towels and an ice chest are
not available. Guests are expected to pack out their trash and clean the cabin
before leaving.

## Natural Features

The compound is accessed by a trail that traverses through dense evergreen
forest. From the cabins, guests can enjoy the view of Fish Lake and its
forested shoreline. The lake is shallow in winter, but will dry up and turn
into meadow in the late summer. Willamette National Forest offers prime
habitat for such species as Roosevelt elk, black bear, bald eagles, black tail
deer and bobcats, among other wildlife.

This site was originally a campground that has been converted to a group site
with a 75-person capacity limit. There are 10 individual campsites. Sites #1-4
are back-in, paved surface sites suitable for tents and accommodating of
trailers ranging up to 42 feet long depending on the site. Sites #5 -10 were
originally walk-in sites less that 60 feet from the main area which can still
be utilized for tents. Each individual site has a picnic table and fire pit.
There is a paved parking area which can be used for RV parking with capacity
for up to 6 RV's There are two double vault toilets, one behind site #1 and an
accessible one near the parking area. Drinking water is available from a
handpump well at the front of the campground.

Lost Prairie Group Site is located along the Over the Rivers and Through the
Woods Scenic Byway and is nestled among the forest in the Cascades at an
elevation of 3600 feet. Lost Prairie is only 15 minutes from the McKenzie
River National Scenic Trail and Clear Lake. Numerous other trails and lakes
are close by as well.

and an older outhouse near site 1. The creek can be accessed from the
campground easily.  
The Lost Prairie Group Area was originally a campground that has been
converted to a group site. If this area is not reserved as a group site, sites
1-4 are available on a first come, first serve basis. Below are the details on
the individual sites within the group site; every site has a picnic table and
fire pit/grill. There is a parking area originally designed for the walk in
sites that can be used for RV parking; this area is suitable for 3 large or 5
small RV's, maximum 6 RV's.

occasionally, come through the park with firewood available for purchase.

The group site is nestled in the trees and Hackleman Creek flows through the
back of the site. There are many wildflowers blooming in the prairie during
the summer.

The McKenzie River trail, Echo Basin, Crescent Mountain, and Browder Ridge
trails are all within fifteen minutes drive. Clear Lake, Smith Reservoir and

Clear Lake Resort is just down the road from Lost Prairie Group Site on Hwy
126 with a restaurant, boat rentals and excellent hiking. It is unique and
well known for its clarity and standing dead trees created by the eruption of
Sand Mountain. The West Cascades Scenic Byway and Santiam Pass-McKenzie Pass
Scenic Byway are in close proximity to the site. Numerous short hikes to
lakes, waterfalls and scenic vistas are along both routes.

Part of the historic Santiam Wagon Road, Lost Prairie is a natural meadow near
Hackleman creek where a scouting party looking for a new wagon route across
the Cascades became lost. After several days of frustration, one member of the
party climbed a tall tree and spotted Sand Mountain to the east, regaining his
bearings.

The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the campground in the 1930's,
which includes a day use picnic shelter with fireplace that is centrally
located along with tables and BBQ grill; there is nearby river access in this
day use area. There are about 3-5 spots for parking depending on the size of
the vehicles.

Scan and Pay is offered at this campground; you may also pay by cash or check
for FCFS campsites. There are no refunds, modifications, cancellations, or

draped Alder, Douglas fir, Hemlock, and Maple trees. Campsites are well-shaded
and full of ferns and similar sub-tropical greenery. Many sites stretch along
the South Santiam River, a 66-mile tributary of the Santiam River.

## Nearby Attractions

The Menagerie Wilderness and Trout Creek Trail is located directly across from
Trout Creek Campground. To the west, is the historic Long Ranch and now an Elk
Refuge. A short wheelchair-accessible trail is located directly across Highway
20 from the campground and accesses a wildlife viewing platform that overlooks
the ranch. Nearby is the Old Santiam Wagon Road that stretches along the
Highway 20 corridor.

This campground provides 34 campsites, 31 singles and 3 double, that
accommodate vehicles 18 to 50 feet in length depending on site. No sites are
directly on the shoreline of the lake, but several offer views of the lake.

the boat launch area. There are four double vault toilets shared by both
sites. The boat launch area includes a boat launch for canoes or small non-

The McKenzie River National Recreation Trail passes through the campground and

## Overview

This campground provides 49 single campsites. There are both reservable and
FCFS sites. The original campsites within Big Lake are in two loops, (sites
#1-14 and #15-20) which have eight or so sites with frontage on the lake
shore. In 1992 additional campsites were opened (sites #21-49) on a long
straight stretch from the boat launch towards Big Lake West. These sites have
larger and wider parking spurs, and most sites use stairs to access the table,
fire rings and tent pad below the parking spur. Sites can accommodate trailers
up to 35 feet in length, depending on site. Drinking water is provided by a
water system, built in 1993, which serves the entire Big Lake complex by
filtering water drawn from the lake and distributing it to the campgrounds.
There are three single vault toilets, and two double vault toilets in the
campground. The extra vehicle parking area consists of a boat launch, picnic
area, and parking for approximately 15 vehicles and boat trailers. All of

the Cascade Range.

The campground area offers 35 campsites, 25 single and 10 double sites, that
can accommodate trailers up to 30 feet in length. The campsites are laid out
in two main loops with sites #1-21 in one and sites #22-35 in the other. There
are approximately 20 extra-vehicle parking spaces on the east side of the
campground for overflow parking. *Extra vehicle fee. The group camp offers a
group site composed of 6 individual campsites and a picnic shelter for groups
of up to 70 people. The site can accommodate trailers up to 30 feet in length.
All sites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. The day use area
includes a boat launch, 2 courtesy docks, a separate fishing pier, and 2
lakeside viewing platforms. There are approximately 35 parking spaces for use
at the boat ramp area, which have also been used as overflow parking (eg extra
vehicle w/boat trailer) for the campground. * Day use parking fee for non

Water is available to visitors from faucet risers throughout the site. There

Additional hiking trails can be found across the lake, including those that lead to Dome Rock and Needle Rock.  The town of Detroit is across the lake with hometown activities.  The Cascading Rivers Bikeway is available for cyclists of all ages.
