Buckhorn Campground

Dougherty Campground is situated in an open pine forest and grassland near the
northern boundary of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. The site
offers 4 tent/trailer sites, and 8 tent-only sites. Primary activities
include; camping (summer and during fall hunting season), picnicking and berry
picking.

Pittsburg Campground overlooks the Wild and Scenic Snake River in the Hells
Canyon National Recreation Area. This large facility is open year-round with
28 tent/trailer sites many of which can accommodate large RVs and trailers.
The accessible facility has accessible campsites and toilets with paved roads
and camp spurs. Drinking water is available from April to October (pending
weather conditions). With access to the Snake River for fishing, boating,
historic intepretation, exploring and hiking within minutes of the campground,
the facility is popular throughout the year. The Deer Creek road is maintained
by the County and is steep and narrow for the last few miles after entering
into the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.

Single unit campsites = $15.00/night. A fee station is available at the
campground.  This is a year-round fee and is still charged even during the
winter months. Visitors going on the river for extended trips will need to pay
for the multiple nights they occupy a campsite.

a fire, campfire, or stove fire is prohibited on all National Forest System
Lands (within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, in the State of Oregon and
Idaho) within a ¼ mile of the Snake River between Hells Canyon Dam, River Mile
247.5, downstream to the Oregon-Washington border at Snake River Mile 176.0.

SNAKE RIVER FIRE RESTRICTION

Pursuant to 36 CFR, Sec. 261.50(a), the following acts are prohibited on all
National Forest System Lands  
within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, in the State of Oregon and Idaho
within a ¼ mile of the Snake  
River between Hells Canyon Dam, River Mile 247.5, downstream to the Oregon-
Washington border at Snake River Mile 176.0. This Order is effective from
06/01/2025 to 09/30/2025 and from 06/01/2026 to 09/30/2026.

**_PROHIBITIONS:_**

1\. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire
(36 CFR 261.52(a)).

**_EXEMPTIONS:_**

Pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this
order:

  1. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order.
  2. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the  
performance of an official duty.

  3. Any person is exempt from prohibition 1 (above) when using a fire fueled by charcoal where the fire is  
contained in a firepan, defined as a device made of fire-resistant material or
metal, with raised edges of height sufficient to contain all residue from the
charcoal fuel and where flammable vegetation is cleared a minimum 3 feet away
from the firepan on all sides.

  4. Any person is exempt from Prohibition 1 (above) when using a fire fueled solely by liquid petroleum or  
LPG fuels and flammable vegetation is cleared a minimum 3 feet away from open
flame on all sides.

  5. Any person is exempt from Prohibition 1 (above) when using a wood burning stove equipped with a  
chimney, minimum 5-foot length, spark arresting screen, consisting of ¼-inch
mesh hardware cloth, and remove all flammable vegetation within a 3-foot
radius, including overhanging material.

Any persons exempt from Prohibition 1 (above) under exemptions 3, 4, or 5 must
always attend the fire and  
completely extinguish the fire prior to leaving. People attending a fire are
required to have a tool that can serve as a shovel and one gallon of water in
their possession. The intent of this requirement is to ensure individuals have
the tools necessary to completely extinguish their fire.
