Overview

Sweetwater Campground remains closed due to the 2020 Creek Wildfire

Sweetwater Campground is laid out in a single loop along Chiquito Creek, shaded by pine, oak and cedar trees. Most sites overlook the creek or a brook that also runs by the campground.

Recreation

The campground attracts visitors primarily for its fishing and swimming holes. Many recreational activities are available at Mammoth Pool, including boating, trout fishing, hiking and swimming.

Facilities

Each campsite contains a picnic table, grill and campfire ring. Vault toilets are provided. Campers must bring drinking water. Supplies are available nearby at Wagner's Mammoth Pool Resort.

Parking spurs are dirt and paved, but tight turns and trees at the edge of interior roads make this camp most ideal for pop-up tent trailers, slide-ins and tent campers.

Natural Features

The Sierra National Forest, located on the western slope of the central Sierra Nevada, is known for its spectacular mountain scenery and abundant natural resources. The terrain includes rolling, oak-covered foothills, heavily forested middle elevation slopes and the starkly beautiful alpine landscape of the High Sierra.

Sweetwater Campground is located close to Mammoth Pool Reservoir near the Ansel Adams Wilderness. This area is known for its jagged peaks, including 13,157-foot Mt. Ritter, and numerous lakes and streams.

Nearby Attractions

A popular pastime in the area is taking a drive on the 83-mile Sierra Vista Scenic Byway.

Directions

From Fresno, California, take Highway 41 north. Turn northeast on Forest Road 200 and pass through North Fork. Take Minarets Road east and follow it 37 miles. Turn right on Mammoth Pool Road and follow it 2 miles to Sweetwater Campground.

Great campsite! The river surrounding the site is gorgeous and a great place to hang, swim and relax. Fun area to hop around on the rocks. Beautiful trees surrounding the whole site. We didnt really leave the campsite at all. The bathroom was very clean. The only downside is there are no bear boxes provided which is not clearly stated on this website. Rec.gov needs to fix that. Bring a bear canister. Also need to bring your own water.

The map on the reservation website does not match the actual campsite location. Therefore we ended up at the wrong sweet water. Lucky they had spots for us there to pay cash. Basically the website needs to be fixed. This is not the sweet water near buck meadows on the northwest side of Yosemite.

Very rustic, bring your own water. Vault toilets were cleaned daily, the camp host was very nice. Pretty place. No cell service, you can drive to the local general store for a signal and a fresh bag of ice.

We loved it. The only thing missing was running water to wash our hands after using bathroom. Other than that we had an amazing time.

The campsite was clean and the host was so friendly and helpful. He kept the restrooms cleaned and well stocked too. The river was beautiful but a bit hard to get in because the rocks are very slippery. We swam at Mammoth a few minutes away which was breathtaking. When we arrived we were a bit confused looking for our site but learned you can pick which site you want and when the host comes around he checks you in. Great experience.

A hidden gem ,, must be prepare with food and drinks ... but overall best place ever ❤️
