Please help protect our forest resources by not cutting, chopping, or using axes or hatchets on live trees. Damaging the bark and the living layers underneath harms the tree’s ability to move water and nutrients. Even small cuts can open the tree to insects, disease, and decay. Larger wounds can disrupt the tree’s vascular system entirely, causing it to weaken and eventually die.

We also ask that you do not hammer nails or screws into live trees. Penetrating the bark creates direct pathways for pests and infections, injures the tree’s internal tissues, and can lead to long-term decline or death.

Your cooperation helps keep our recreation areas healthy, safe, and beautiful for everyone. Thank you for doing your part to protect our trees.

Overview

Jemez Falls Campground is located in a stunning Ponderosa Pine and forest meadow environment. The campground elevation is 7,880 feet above sea level. Come prepared for warm days and cool nights.

The Cerro Pelado Area closure prohibits members of the public from entering Trail 137 from access points South of the East Fork Trailhead. Entry is allowed North from the East Fork Trailhead to Las Conchas Trailhead.

Please remember that this campground is special. Help keep it clean and beautiful by using the trash dumpsters. Campground has 52 camp sites with picnic table and fire ring. Paved access which allows trailers and RV's up to 40 feet.

Loop 4 sites are non-generator use areas. Loops 1-3 may use generators from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

There is paved access from the highway and paved internal roads to individual campsites. There are no RV hook-ups. Drinking water is provided from spigots conveniently located throughout the campground. Vault toilets provide basic sanitation needs. A campground host is on duty.

Recreation

Overnight camping, fishing, and hiking are main attractions. Other recreational activities include outdoor photography and nature viewing. The campground is within the heart of the Jemez National Recreation Area.

Facilities

The campground contains 51 overnight tent and RV/trailer campsites. Loop 4 has been designated as a (quiet area), generator use is not permitted. Please be aware of the size specifications for your trailer/RV/tent, ensure your equipment will fit in the sizes that are stated for each site. There is paved access from the highway and paved internal roads to individual campsites. There are no RV/trailer hook-ups at the campground. Drinking water is provided from spigots conveniently located throughout the campground. Vault toilets provide basic sanitation needs. A campground host is on duty during the summer camping season.

Natural Features

The East Fork Jemez Wild and Scenic River runs close to the campground. The campground is situated on rolling terrain shaded by pines and sunny in open meadows.

Nearby Attractions

Jemez Falls, the largest waterfall in the Jemez Mountains, is a half mile hike from the campground. The Valles Caldera National Preserve and Bandelier National Monument are within short driving distance along the Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway.

Directions

From Alburquerque: Take Interstate 25 north for 12 miles; exit onto NM State Highway 550 northwest for approximately 20 miles then exit onto NM Highway 4. The campground is accessed off NM Highway 4, approximately 15 miles northeast of Jemez Springs.

Campground was beautiful,good roads, and nice trails despite the recent burn. Loop 2 site 32 was so sloped our camper was 12 inches out of level from back to front which is a challenge to correct without a great number of leveling blocks . It was a weekend so we had mariachi party with a continuously bark chihuahua on one side of us a drunken rock party with many underage drinkers on the other. Not the peaceful mountain campsite we had hoped for. Luckily the party goers did calm down after 10pm and we were able to get some sleep. Mornings were gorgeous cool and quiet.

It was so lovely and quiet. The campground hosts were also warm and full of good info about how to enjoy the area. The campsites (at least in Loop 4 where we were) are large and you are not right on top of your neighbors.

Fantastic trail to Jemez Falls. Once at the Falls, they were breathtaking. The campsites were beautiful, clean, quiet and family friendly.

I like this campground and have camped here several times for its access to favorite trails of mine. This year I was camped at loop 2 site 31. The area around the picnic table and tent site was all fine black dust that got into all of my gear and my dog and I got filthy. I tried spreading a trap o the ground but the dust gathered on top of the tarp and didn’t do any good. Other than that the site and the area is nice. We were evacuated on the second morning due to risk from the McCauley Springs fire. The evacuation was orderly. People were very helpful. The announcement made with a bull horn from the fire truck was hard to understand. Fellow campers let me know what was said.

We have stayed many times. Our first morning this trip we were just starting off on a hike down the canyon when I think it was first responders came through the campground saying it was closed and to evacuate immediately. Which we did. If fire had started earlier that morning and was assessed to be a danger to the campground area. All the emergency people we came in contact with you’re very helpful and professional. I totally appreciate all of them. Thank you very much guys.
