## Overview

You’re in for a treat when you rent Aspen Guard Station’s beautiful cabin.
Built between 1938-1940, this cabin offers a visit to the past while being
near enough to civilization to have a foot in both worlds. This old cabin
housed the Forest Service Rangers who patrolled the forests, often on
horseback, checking timber and livestock permits, helping neighboring cabin
dwellers and the public, much like today.

## Overview

Transfer Campground, located approximately 11 miles north of Mancos, Colorado
in the San Juan National Forest, is known for its access to many area
recreation trails.

## Recreation

Recreational opportunities abound at and near this facility for horseback
riding, hiking, mountain biking and ATV riding. Many campers bring their ATVs
and motorbikes to ride on the Aspen Loop Trail (just 1/2 mile north of the
campground).  
  
There are a number of trailheads nearby the campground, including Big Al
Interpretive Trail, Rim Trail and Box Canyon Trail. More trails are available
in the surrounding area including: Chicken Creek Trail, Morrison Trail, Gold
Run Trail and West Mancos Trail.

The campground offers 12 first-come, first-serve family sites and one
overnight group site.  
  
The reservable group site has five double picnic tables, a large group area, a
serving table and cooking grills. A vault toilet restroom is located near the
group area.  
  
The 12 first-come, first-serve campsites offer one vault toilet and barrier
free camping. Parking spaces are small, but can accommodate some RVs.  
  
Horses are not allowed in the campground, but there are corrals with five
sites adjacent to the campground on Forest Road 561.

whispering aspen and making for a great camping atmosphere, visitors will
enjoy the sounds of birds and the occasional horse neighing in the corrals
across the road.

## Overview

The Jersey Jim Lookout Tower is named after an early cattleman who ran Jersey
cattle in the area. Today, cattle are still grazed in the area under permit.
Many nearby trails were established by loggers seeking timber or by miners
accessing hard-rock ore deposits in the La Plata (Spanish for silver)
Mountains. Hesperus Peak, a sacred mountain to the Navajo Nation, is visible,
as is Sleeping Ute Mountain of the Four Corners. The Jersey Jim Lookout Tower
was home to U.S. Forest Service fire lookouts from the 1940s to 1970s.

The tower was renovated and saved from demolition in 1991 by the Jersey Jim
Foundation, a nonprofit local volunteer organization, which operates and
maintains the tower under permit with the San Juan National Forest. Rental
income is earmarked for maintenance of the facility to offer this unique
experience to the American public.

The Tower cab includes the original furniture and propane heating and
lighting. However, there is no electricity or running water. A sink, propane
refrigerator, and oven/stove are in the kitchen area. Guests must bring their
own supplies. The dining table seats four, and there’s a double bed, and
dresser. With windows all round, views are 360 degrees.

In the middle of the cab is the historic fire finder, which early lookouts
used to spot fires, and which you can use to orient yourself to surrounding

day trips to Mancos, Durango and Mesa Verde National Park.  
  
The name, "Target Tree," refers to the Ute Indians' use of the area to harvest
sap and bark from Ponderosa pines as food supplements. They also used the
trees for target practice, leaving several scarred trees throughout the area.

## Recreation

Visitors may enjoy taking a short, accessible interpretive trail to view a
historic target tree. The campground is also known for its great birding
opportunities, with a sign in the campground that lists species found in the
area.  
  
The Narrow Gauge Trail begins within the campground and climbs 3.4 miles to an
old railroad grade. The rails were placed just three feet apart to allow
trains to navigate through the rugged mountains.

Target Tree Campground, located between Durango and Mancos off Highway 160,
has 28 sites on a south-facing hillside overlooking Thompson Park. This
campground's name refers to the Ute Indians' use of the area to harvest sap
and bark of ponderosa pines as food supplements. They also used trees for

historical markers explain their usage. There are 17 barrier-free sites. Many
sites are shady, but can be hot on sunny days. Most large and pull-thru sites

camping with horses. The campground's group campsite group site has been
converted into individual sites and is no longer available as a group site.

## Overview

McPhee Recreation Complex is located on the south shore of McPhee Reservoir
near the town of Dolores in southwestern Colorado. Visitors enjoy the area for
its boating, water skiing and fishing opportunities.

## Recreation

McPhee Reservoir, the largest within the San Juan National Forest and second-
largest in Colorado, has 50 miles of shoreline. Boating, water skiing and
fishing are popular activities. A boat ramp and fish cleaning station are
located within the complex.  
  
The half-mile Can Do Trail climbs to a scenic overlook with panoramic views of
the reservoir and the beautiful peaks surrounding Mesa Verde to the south.

## Facilities

This large campground offers group sites, RV and tent sites, some of which
have electric hookups. Several sites have shelters for shade. Picnic tables
and campfire rings are provided, as are flush toilets.

The McPhee Campground has 71 campsites on 2 loops with paved access. There are
50 reservable campsites, 24 sites with electric hookups, and 2 sites offer
tables and toilets accommodating wheelchairs. A dozen campsites are walk-ins
with tent pads near scenic overlooks.

The adjacent McPhee Group Area has 4 group campsites available for reservation
(with limited electrical hookups). There are volleyball posts, a ball field,
and horseshoe pits (you supply the equipment).

## Natural Features

The campground is situated on a mesa 500 feet above the reservoir, at an
elevation of 7,400 feet. Pinyon and juniper trees offer shade throughout the
campground.

## Nearby Attractions

Southwestern Colorado, part of the Four Corners region, contains more than
4,000 archaeological sites and more than 600 cliff dwellings. Many sites offer
glimpses of the ancient Anasazi culture for which the area is known.  
  
Anasazi Heritage Center is 10 minutes away in Dolores. Mesa Verde National
Park is one hour south of the campground. The Canyon of the Ancients is an
hour southwest and Hovenweep National Monument is an hour west.
