Located along the Laurel Fork River between Laurel Fork North and South
Wilderness areas, this primitive campground offers visitors a nice camping
opportunity in the Middle Mountain area on the site of an old Civilian
Conservation Corps location.

Day hiking and backpacking opportunities are available leaving from this
campground as well through the Laurel Fork North and South Wilderness.

## Overview

The Middle Mountain Cabins are nestled in a small grassy opening near a small
pond and Camp Five Run, a hiking trail that leads into the Laurel Fork South
Wilderness. The cabins are secluded and offer a quiet retreat for visitors.
Rented as a single unit, Middle Mountain Cabins include a main cabin with a
kitchen, and two historic sleeping cabins.  
  
The cabins occupy a 3.5-acre space about 18 miles south of Wymer. The two
smaller cabins were built in 1939 and served as bunk houses for Forest Service
employees.

## Recreation

Middle Mountain Cabins (elevation 3,750 feet) are located on a half-acre
grassy field surrounded by red spruce and yellow birch. The cabins sit near
the Laurel Fork South Wilderness. Several other trails around the Middle
Mountain Cabins include the High Falls of Cheat Trail # 345, which is a
2.9-mile trek to the beautiful waterfalls.  
  
The West Fork Rail Trail #312 is an old railroad grade and runs along the West
Fork of the Greenbrier River. The Allegheny Trial # 701 spans many districts
on the Monongahela National Forest.  
  
Fishing is popular on the Cheat, Glady Fork, Shavers Fork, and West and East
Forks of the Greenbrier River. Lake fishing is popular at Spruce Knob Lake and
Buffalo Lake. A state fishing license, National Forest Stamp, a Conservation
stamp, and a trout stamp are required.

## Facilities

The main cabin is a single story log building with a gabled roof that extends
to cover a full length porch. Inside are exposed log rafters and tie beams.
Outside there is a picnic table, grill and campfire ring. A four car gravel
parking area is located beside the grassy clearing.  
  
All cabins have fireplaces. Firewood is provided, but the supply is not
guaranteed. There is no water in the cabin, but an outside handpump for
drinking water is available. An outdoor vault toilet is located onsite. Each
sleeping cabin contains two sets of bunk beds, while the main cabin contains
one full size bed for a total capacity of 10 people.  
  
The kitchen includes a gas stove, cabinets, a table with six chairs, two
lounge chairs, some pots, pans, dishes and silverware. There is no electricity
available. Visitors should bring food, matches or a lighter, an ax, small saw,
bedding, lanterns for each cabin, flashlights, food, ice chests, and personal
gear. Food should be protected as field mice and bears frequent the area.

A convenience store and fuel can be found in Bartow and a larger grocery store
can be found in Elkins. Due to rural mountain roads, visitors should expect to
drive for at least an hour to reach these towns.

camping units, 2 double camping units, and 10 walk in camping units with fire
rings, lantern posts, picnic tables and paved spurs (standard camping units).
In addition, there is a developed host site equipped with electrical (solar),
water, and a sewage holding tank.

Spruce Knob Lake Campground contains five single-toilet vault restrooms all of
which are accessible.

Gatewood Group Campground contains 1 reservable site that can accommodate up
to approximately 30 people. The campground contains fire rings, picnic tables,
and two single-toilet vault restrooms. There is no electric or drinking water
at the group campground. The group campground is not ABA accessible.

There are trash dumpsters located at Spruce Knob Lake Campground and there are
trash bins located at Gatewood Group Campground for garbage collection and
disposal.

There are no dump stations in either campground.

The average operation and maintenance season for Spruce Knob Lake Campground
and Gatewood Group Campground has been from approximately mid-April through
mid-October. At a minimum, the Forest Service (FS) will expect the permit
Holder to fully operate the campground from the third Friday night in April
through the Columbus Day weekend in October.  
Spruce Knob is the highest peak in West Virginia. A stone and steel
observation tower is perched atop the peak, offering breathtaking 360-degree
views of the area.

## Recreation

Sixty miles of picturesque hiking trails crisscross the region, and the
campground provides direct access to the pleasant 1-mile Big Bend River Loop.  
  
Trout fishing is available nearby at 25-acre Spruce Knob Lake, and in
surrounding creeks. Facilities at the lake include a small boat ramp, parking
area and vault toilets. A wooden pier along the shoreline provides barrier-
free access to the lake.No swimming is allowed.

exposed environment. One-sided red spruce deformed by constant exposure to

huckleberry plants cover the ground.  
  
Due to its location, the campground may experience cold fogs and strong winds
year-round.

for more of a day hike.

Island Campground is located approximately 5 miles north and east of Bartow,
West Virginia.

local caves and Blackwater Falls. It is comprised of one campground, one group
campground and a day-use area. The campground has 26 (25 single, 1 double)
camping units with electric hookups, fire rings, lantern posts, picnic tables
and paved spurs. In addition, there is a developed host site equipped with
electrical, water, and sewage hookups. Most of the campground sites and
facilities within it are ABA accessible.

The campground contains two single-unit vault toilets, one double-unit vault
toilet, and one six-unit flush restroom with four shower units all of which
are accessible.

The group campground contains one reservable site that will accommodate up to
40 people. The group campground contains fire rings, picnic tables, lantern
posts, and two single-unit vault toilets. There is no electric at the group
campground. Drinking water may be obtained from Stuart Campground. The group
campground is not accessible.

The day-use area contains three reservable pavilions. The “Large” Pavilion has
electricity and can accommodate 100 people. There are two non-electric
pavilions: the “Small” Pavilion is non-electric and can accommodate 50 people;
the “Alpena” Pavilion is non-electric and can accommodate 25 people. The day
use area also contains 5 separate vehicle parking areas, with space for
approximately 25-40 vehicles in each lot, a 14 acre field (approximately),
multiple picnic tables, multiple pedestal grills, four restroom facilities
with two toilets in each restroom (two changing rooms located at one of the
restrooms), a river-beach area, easy stream access to Shavers Fork of Cheat
River, and volleyball net. The restrooms, changing areas, parking areas, Large
and Small Pavilions are accessible. The entire 14 acre field (approximately)
must be mowed and trimmed. Holder will be responsible for all grounds
maintenance of the site and facilities.

New for the 2025 season the day-use area also contains a historic cabin that
was previously managed under the local Forest Service district office for
storage and administrative use. It was recently fully renovated and has been
added to this prospectus for future use as a rental. The cabin contains a
fully furnished kitchen (overhead cabinets, refrigerator, oven/range, sink,
and countertops with drawers underneath), a single full-bathroom (with
standing shower, toilet, and sink), a study room with two desks, a living room
(with two couches, and end tables), a second living/dining space (with table,
chairs and benches), and two furnished bedrooms (with two single beds, night
stands, standing closets, and lamps in each room – 4 beds total). The cabin
has electric heat, public water, and the sewer is tied into the on-site
wastewater system. The cabin does not have air conditioning. Permit holder
will be responsible for adding the cabin to the reservation system. Similar to
all the other sites listed in this prospectus, the permit holder will be
responsible for all daily upkeep of the cabin, check-in/check-out, as well as
repair and replacement of consumables within the cabin. Due to the cabin being
on the National Register of Historic Places, any proposed alterations/repairs
to the cabin and the adjacent landscaping by the permit holder must be
reviewed and approved by the Forest Supervisor in conjunction with
consultation with the Forest Service Archaeologist and the State’s Historic
Preservation Office (SHPO) prior to implementation. Applicants must consider
the cost of cabin maintenance, upkeep, and cleaning as part of their business
operations when calculating operating costs. Applicants must include a
proposed nightly fee for the cabin within the fee structure portion of the
application.

There is one trash dumpster located at the Stuart Recreation Area and one
trash dumpster located in the campground for garbage collection and disposal.
There are individual trash bins located at each of the shelters and at the
group campground.

There is one recreation vehicle dump station in the recreation area located
adjacent to the campground.

The average operation and maintenance season for Stuart Recreation Area has
been approximately from mid-April through October. At a minimum, the Forest
Service (FS) will expect the permit Holder to fully operate the recreation
area from the third Friday night in April through the Columbus Day weekend in

**River Swimming -** It's a lot of fun, and there are plenty of trout to tempt
anglers of all skill levels. The 2-mile River Loop Hiking Trail is enjoyed by
many visitors, and is a great way to watch for birds and wildlife. No
lifeguard.

The campground lies on a single loop with long spurs. Drinking water and
accessible flush toilets and showers are provided, with a dump station is on-
site. Each site comes with a campfire ring, tent pad, lantern post and
electric hookups.  
  
The day-use area has three picnic pavilions with maintained fields and a beach
on the riverfront.

The campground is perched along a bend on the Shavers Fork River. Shavers is a
tributary of the Cheat River, a popular rafting river with rocky rapids.  
  
Stuart is in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. The Monongahela Forest

Due to the cabin being on the National Register of Historic Places, any proposed alterations/repairs to the cabin and the adjacent landscaping by the permit holder must be reviewed and approved by the Forest Supervisor in conjunction with consultation with the Forest Service Archaeologist and the State’s Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) prior to implementation. Applicants must consider the cost of cabin maintenance, upkeep, and cleaning as part of their business operations when calculating operating costs. Applicants must include a proposed nightly fee for the cabin within the fee structure portion of the application.</p>
<p>There is one trash dumpster located at the Stuart Recreation Area and one trash dumpster located in the campground for garbage collection and disposal. There are individual trash bins located at each of the shelters and at the group campground.</p>

<p>The average operation and maintenance season for Stuart Recreation Area has been approximately from mid-April through October. <p><strong>River Swimming -</strong> It's a lot of fun, and there are plenty of trout to tempt anglers of all skill levels. The 2-mile River Loop Hiking Trail is enjoyed by many visitors, and is a great way to watch for birds and wildlife. No lifeguard.</p>

The campground lies on a single loop with long spurs. Drinking water and accessible flush toilets and showers are provided, with a dump station is on-site. Each site comes with a campfire ring, tent pad, lantern post and electric hookups.

The campground is perched along a bend on the Shavers Fork River. Shavers is a tributary of the Cheat River, a popular rafting river with rocky rapids.

Elkins, West Virginia, on Forest Road 91 (Stuart Drive) near the Otter Creek
Wilderness. 8 available sites are nestled along rock outcroppings that offer
unique landscapes.

There is stream fishing and hiking located nearby. Middle Point Trail #140,
3.7 miles in length is located along Forest Road 91 (Stuart Drive) west of the
Campground. The Otter Creek Wilderness offers several trails and more
challenging experiences just next door.

## Overview

**The Seneca Shadows Campground** overlooks Seneca Rocks and is surrounded by
mountains on both the east and west. Hiking and nature study at Seneca Rocks
are just a couple of the popular activities in the area. The North Fork South
Branch Potomac River is nearby, making fishing a popular pastime. Seneca
Shadows Campground is comprised of 11 standard camping units with electric
hookups, 2 double camping units with electric hookups, 23 standard camping
units without electric, 2 double camping units without electric, 40 walk-in
camp sites and 3 group tent sites with drinking water, fire rings, lantern
posts, picnic tables and paved spurs (standard camping units). In addition,
there are two developed host sites equipped with electrical, water, and sewage
hookups as well as an outdoor amphitheater that features lighting, sound
equipment, and seating.

The campground contains two four-toilet vault restrooms, one double-toilet
vault restroom, and four multiple-toilet flush restrooms with showers. There
are trash dumpsters located throughout Seneca Shadows Campground for garbage
collection and disposal.

There is one recreation vehicle dump station in the recreation area located
adjacent to the host site in the campground.
