At Hammerhorn there are nine campsites and three bathrooms including one
accessible site and bathroom. There is access to potable water spigots. There
is a trailer pull through site. It is not paved. The location is mostly a
coniferous/fir forested area with smaller deciduous trees/bushes. The
campground sits a short distance above the lake. The accessible trail around
the lake is about 40% complete. There is a five-acre lake for trout fishing,
however it is not stocked and fishing unavailable due to low water levels.

Howard Meadows Campground

Howard Lake Campground has 4 sites and is a popular primitive experience. A
high-clearance vehicle is needed to cross the creek on one section of the road
into Howard Lake.

Avoid parking or pitching tents under dead standing trees. Use extreme caution
in high winds. Downed trees, dropped limbs, stump holes and unstable terrain
may be present. Fishing may be impacted by lily pads and low water levels.

Howard Lake is a 20-acre lake. The lake is open for non-motorized recreational
paddle boating, kayaking, or pack rafting.

Dispersed camp site with no improvements. No traffic control such as paved
loop road and parking spurs that you find in "developed" campgrounds, and no

The Mendocino National Forest is one of 18 National Forests in California, and
is nearly one million square acres in size. Forest Service employees you are
most likely to come in contact with, in campgrounds and recreation areas, are
here to protect and maintain all the resources of the National Forest. One of
their primary responsibilities is to maintain the recreation values of the
Forest and to enhance - whenever possible - your Mendocino National Forest
visit.

There are campgrounds on the Mendocino National Forest that use the Pack it
In, Pack it Out program for dealing with waste. This means that garbage cans
are not provided. Campers and hikers are asked to bring their own garbage bags
and take their garbage with them when leaving the area. While this seems like
an inconvenience, the funds saved are used to provide additional recreational
facilities. Do not bury litter; forest animals can smell it and will dig it
up.We appreciate your cooperation and assistance in helping to manage, protect
and conserve the various resources of this forest.

or use a stove, unless you are in a developed recreation area (campground or

There are 15 sites, #7 and #10 are "pull-throughs" and can accommodate larger
trailers. Roads within the campground are very narrow with tight turns, and
may not accommodate trailers longer than 24'.  

This campground is dominated by oak trees, including live oaks, valley oaks
and black oaks. Other vegetation includes madrone, buckeye and pine trees.
There is poison oak in the campground.

There is a trail near site 7 that leads from the campground to the confluence
of the National Wild and Scenic Black Butte River and the National Wild &
Scenic Eel River (Middle Fork). The trail is steep, so please use caution.
Swimming is a popular activity in summer months.

Please pack out your trash. Water is available but is shut off in late
fall/winter due to freezing temperatures.

Three Prong Campground

Small creek flows through camp early in the season (dry in late season). Camp

Sugarfoot Glade Campground

Situated in forest at the edge of a meadow. Thomes Creek is located about five
road miles from the camp and is a popular fishing and swimming spot.

Kingsley Glade Campground

There are six fire rings and 10 picnic tables. There is a stream with a spring
pipe if you continue 2.6 miles east of the campground on the road. The road is
nice for hiking and biking because of limited traffic. The campground is full
of mature oaks and pines and there is plenty of firewood in the area.

Atchison Campground

A partial road closure is in place on the 22N11 Road in the Covelo Ranger
District. Location of the closure is shown on the map. The closure is for
public safety after a road failure in the area has made vehicle travel unsafe
and at risk of collapse without warning under the weight of a vehicle. The
road closure will be temporary until repairs are completed and the road
restored.

Pursuant to 16 U.S.C § 551 and 36 C.F.R § 261.50(b), and to provide for public
safety and protect natural resources, the following act is prohibited within
the Covelo Ranger District of the Mendocino National Forest. This Order is
effective from 12:00 a.m. on March 11th 2026 through December 31st 2026.

Using a motor vehicle on National Forest System Road 22N11 between National
Forest Road System 22N22/ 22N11 junction and 22N11/22N11 N spur junction as
shown on the map attached as Exhibit A. 36 C.F.R. § 261.55(b).

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this
Order:

  1. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
  2. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order.

This prohibition is in addition to the general prohibitions found in 36 C.F.R
Part 261, Subpart A.

A violation of this prohibition is punishable by a fine of not more than
$5,000 for an individual, or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for
not more than 6 months, or both.

## Overview

Tucked away in the towering pines of the Mendocino National Forest, the
Masterson Campground is perfect for your next big get-together. The large
grassy meadows of the campground are surrounded by a dense blanket of forest,
offering visitors an outdoor experience of tranquility and solitude.

## Recreation

The campground's open meadow areas allow for group games and activities, and a
large fire ring provides the perfect place for a nighttime campfire circle and
s'mores session. Plaskett Lake, a short one-mile walk from the campground,
offers a variety of trout for the fishing enthusiast, as well as canoeing and
other non-motorized boating activities. Mendocino National Forest's 913,306
acres of mountains and canyons allow for a variety of recreational
opportunities, including hiking, backpacking, boating, fishing, hunting,
nature study and off-highway vehicle riding. Whether it's deer, birds,
rabbits, chipmunks or perhaps the occasional bear, wildlife viewing is always
a popular activity for visitors. The area is also an extremely popular
destination during hunting season.

Masterson offers traditional primitive camping with the added convenience of
toilets and running water. The site can hold up to 75 guests and 25 vehicles
comfortably.

Range in northwestern California, just a three-hour drive north of San

Grizzly Flat is a dispersed camping area next to the Yuki Wilderness and is a
popular destination for hunters in the fall.  It has vault toilets, few fire
rings and no picnic tables.  The campground is in a coniferous pine/spruce
forest and is a relatively cool temperature camping site.  RV trailers are not
recommended.  It is not paved and there is no real loop for a turn around.
The area was the old Grizzly Flat Fire Station. Located off of M1 heading
south from Eel River towards Lake Pillsbury.  Campgrounds will be on the left
hand side of the road.  There is a fenced grassy area we are trying to
maintain for restoration purposes and ask visitors to not camp there.
