Arrow Rock

Overview

Arrow Rock Campground is situated on Melvern Lake on the eastern edge of the Flint Hills of Kansas. Visitors enjoy the area's wide range of recreational activities, including boating, fishing, hiking and hunting. Find a virtual tour of Melvern Lake at http://www.photographyoptions.net/images/melvern/tour.html

Recreation

Melvern Lake impounds nearly 7,000 acres of water on the upper reaches of the Marais des Cygnes River Valley. Boating and swimming are popular activities on the lake.

Anglers will find walleye, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, as well as black, striped, white and smallmouth bass.

The 18,000 acres of land surrounding Melvern Lake provide plentiful hiking and hunting opportunities. Several trails wind around the lake, including the 4-mile Tallgrass Heritage Trail, which begins in the campground. Hunters may find deer, quail, turkeys, ducks, rabbits and squirrels throughout the area.

Facilities

The campground offers 33 campsites, 19 of which have electric and water hookups. Several picnic sites are available on a first come, first served basis.

Amenities include flush and vault toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station. A boat ramp, dock, fish cleaning station and playground offer additional recreation opportunities.

Natural Features

The Flint Hills represent America's last expanse of intact tallgrass prairie, made up of big bluestem, switchgrass and Indian grass. The rolling hills on the south side of the lake are wooded, but trees and shade are more sparse within the campground.

My husband and I absolutely loved it here. The grounds keepers were so very nice and helpful. They would come over and talk to us for a while just telling us about the lake and how they loved it there. It was very peaceful and quiet. We did leave 2 days early because we were over the heat, and we were sleeping in a tent and it stormed every night being there, but all and all, it was so relaxing and we will definitely be back! :-) Only this time with a camper LOL.

It’s always been one of my favorite places. I was a little disappointed on two of the trees that had to be cut down maybe because Weather was rough on them or something. I’m not sure so I didn’t have much shade in my spot. The house that are there are awesome. They came around but every day given treats to the kids into the animals and they wanted to make sure I was doing OK knowing there wasn’t a whole lot of shade. The sunsets are incredible so beautiful.

The spot we had in Arrow Root was #33. It was a decent one. No shade for the heat of the day however mornings were nice! Good view of the lake of course. Being a rookie camper, no recommendations to make. Just trying to get to know our rig better! Nice area though!

Better for a van or camper rather than tent to be honest. Access to cove is the best draw, however not much shade. Be careful of people walking through your campsite to access the cove however.

Great spot with lots of shade for tents. Covered table in between next site which is first come first served. Make sure not to walk through other camp sites if trying to access the cove. Camp hosts are absolutely wonderful!! Hook up has rv and normal outlets.

Good experience camping. Trees need to be taken care of . Counted 1/2 a dozen dead trees on other campsites. One i believe was site 105 had 2 dead trees on site. A real danger to people camping at that site.

Arrow Rock is the best campground at Melvern! The sites are great for boondocking or camping with services. Most have plenty of shade and are all relatively close to the water. You can walk right down to swim or play in the cove. The camp hosts are beyond amazing! They are kind, neighborly, and helpful. They visit regularly to see if you are having a great time and to see if you need anything. If you have any issues, they are there to help you find a solution. They always have a treat for the kids and the dogs! It's a wonderful place to camp!!!

We have been to arrow rock for 30years in a row , A lot of changes have been made .Some for the good some for the bad .I know it cost a lot to keep the park open but some of the sites need a lot of repair. Each year we try to bring a couple with us to camp beside us.The camp site #1 is in very poor shape it is a mud hole ,it needs to be reworked and a lot of gravel and a silt fence put up on the south side other than that it is a wounder full camp ground. We were 43 three years old when we first came to Arrow Rock Park now we are 73 years old know hope to spend many more years at it Thanks, for your time Terry Long Spring Hill Ks. PS we only live 5 miles from Hills Dale lake and 70 miles to Arrow Rock That is how much we enjoy Your camp ground!

The park was quiet and lovely. We stayed on the left part of the park, which was nicer. My husband is handicapped and we really appreciated the layout of the bathroom and shower room. The lake was peaceful and beautiful. We visited Tallgrass while there and spent most of a day- my favorite experience of Kansas.

I have camped at Arrow Rock in May for the last two years. Last year and this year the park was poorly maintained. This year, the grass was knee-high in the park. The gentleman camping next to me went home and got his weed trimmer to come back to the lake and clean his campsite. It is not enjoyable when the grass is wet in the mornings and it is so tall. The most frustrating part was visiting a friend camping at the outlet park. The grass had been mowed previously and a mowing company was mowing again. I could tell that the grass at Arrow Rock hadn't been mowed this year but the Outlet Park had been mowed at least twice.

Perfect time of year to enjoy Melvern Lake's Arrow Rock Campground. Not too hot, nor too cold. The fish were biting most days. My husband caught and released about nine. We met some other campers who also are return campers to Arrow Rock. We recommend this campground to all.
