Joaquin Miller Campground is located 19 miles north of Burns, Oregon on US
Highway 395.  Despite the easily accessed location, this 8 site campground
receives light use most of the year.  Developed to accommodate stock, Joaquin
Miller has two pipe stock corrals and hitching rails available to users.
Please pack out what you pack in, there is no trash service provided.

**Alert:**   Portions of this trail have not been maintained in recent years.
The aftermath of recent wildfires has damaged them or made them difficult to
travel.  Visitors should expect to encounter down logs, overgrown brush, and
tread damage.  A contract has been created to address the backlog of
maintenance on these trails.  We apologize for the inconvenience, appreciate
your patience and will provide updated information as conditions change.

## Overview

Idlewild Campground is the perfect place for large gatherings in any weather.
In sun, rain or snow, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors while
spending time with friends and family.  
  
The campground is situated along Highway 395 north of Burns, Oregon. In the
summer, it is popular with hikers and mountain bikers. In the winter, visitors
can snowmobile and cross-country ski.

## Recreation

Idlewild offers opportunities for camping, picnicking, hiking and mountain
biking. Devine Summit Trail begins within the campground. Snowmobiling and
cross-country skiing bring visitors to the area in the winter.

## Facilities

Idlewild contains one accessible, group day-use picnic shelter available for
reservations for up to 75 people. It is equipped with picnic tables, a
campfire ring and grills. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided.
Individual sites for overnight camping are available on a first-come, first-
served basis.

## Natural Features

The campground is situated at an elevation of 5,000 feet in a large stand of
Ponderosa pines. The group shelter sits near a meadow within Idlewild
Campground. The Malheur National Forest encompasses 1.46 million acres in the
Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon. The forest's dramatic landscapes include the
Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, with 9,038' Strawberry Mountain, which extends
east to west through the heart of the forest, and the Monument Rock Wilderness
along the eastern boundary.

The campground is located a short drive from Burns, Oregon. There are horse
trails and equestrian camping within 10 miles of Idlewild.

Nestled among pondersoa pine trees, this secluded campground offers a
wonderful place for those in search of a quiet place to stay, whether camping
or just needing a quiet place to spend the night while traveling from Burns to
John Day, Oregon.

The campground has light use until big game hunting seasons.  Visitors can
enjoy fishing in Poison Creek Resevoir, hiking, hunting and horseback riding
local trails such as Malheur River Trail #303 and Craft Cabin trail #319.

Rock Springs Campground

This campground sits on the quiet shores of Yellowjacket Lake.  This beautiful
and quiet location offers abundant birding and wildlife viewing opportunities
with eagles, osprey and pronghorn antelope frequenting the area.  The lake has
a small sand beach and an easily accessible shoreline for fishing.  This
campground has a very nice covered group picnic area.

**Public should be aware warmer weather can bring blue-green algae blooms to
lakes.Please read the attached information for what to look for and what to do
should you encounter a blue-green algae bloom.**
