Ride your bicycle to the top of Mount Pinos or hike the Mount Pinos Trail,
McGill exploration trail, or enjoy the views of the valleys below from your

McGill Family Campground sites are $30 each. There are 72 family campground
sites. Day use only at the campground is $10.00 a day. Additional vehicle

10 vehicles, an RV or towed trailer are considered one of the vehicles. Group
Camp II can accommodate up to 60 people and ten vehicles. Additional vehicles

Campground, with 29 individual sites, is located 2 miles further south on
Frazier Mountain Road.

Cerro Noroeste at an approximate elevation of 8,200 feet. The surrounding
vegetation consists of old growth Jeffrey Pine and white fir forest with
smaller brush and shrub species.

Recreation use at Campo Alto Campground is primarily weekend camping. The
western end of Tumamait Trail (21W03), located near the campground entrance,
accesses the Chumash Wilderness. Most users come from the Los Angeles Basin,
Santa Maria area and southern San Joaquin Valley.

This area has two group camping areas within its boundary; combined capacity
of both group camps is approximately 70 people. There is a large parking area
that can accommodate cars or RV's near the group campgrounds for use by group
campers or as overflow parking for individual campsites if needed. The fee per
night is $100. Includes 10 cars in the cost of the campsite.

The campground is normally closed during the winter season as the only access
is via Cerro Noroeste Road, which is not maintained in the winter. The normal
operating season is late April thru November.

campground is a favorite "retreat from the heat." Conveniently located,
Chuchupate Campground is just minutes from Los Angeles. Ditch the cell phone
and the laptop, and leave the grind behind. Following a serpentine ascent to
Chuchupate, you will take in views of the Lockwood Valley; through the pines
you can glimpse Frazier Mountain and the Tehachapi Mountains.

## Recreation

Hikers who want a bit of a challenge can make a day trip from Chuchupate
Campground up the Frazier Mountain Trail with some panoramic views of Lockwood
Valley and the high desert. The lower portion of the hike is almost entirely
exposed and can be hot during the summer, but the upper half is pleasantly
shaded. The Dark Sky element at Chuchupate makes it a favorite for star
gazing. This campground also offers access to miles of OHV recreation.

The Dry Canyon area on the Mt. Pinos Ranger District is temporarily closed
effective March 1, 2023 for public safety. Forest Service law enforcement
officers will strictly enforce the closure order, which carries a penalty of
$5,000 and/or six months in jail.

This forest closure order will be in effect through February 28, 2025, and
specifically prohibits hunting, OHV use, hiking and camping in the Dry Canyon
area.

The closure area includes the Dome Springs Campground, Dome Springs Road
(8N40), Dry Canyon Trails 22W10, 22W11, and 22W13, and a portion of the
Chumash Wilderness lying immediately north and northeast of Dry Canyon.

Kings Campground

**8/1/2024 ALERT** \- Contact the Mt. Pinos District office for current access
information to the Goldhill area. Due to the Post Fire, this area may not be
accessible.

Goldhill Camping Area is an open camping location adjacent to Piru Creek at
the base of Alamo Mountain.  Recreational Vehicles up to 26 feet. Picnic
tables, fire rings, toilets. No potable water available.  Located near several
Forest Service Off-Highway Vehicle (motorcycle and four-wheel drive) roads and
trails and is approximately eight miles southwest of Hungry Valley State
Vehicular Recreation Area.

In 1889, John L. Henderson made a claim just west of his property here. In
1895 The Antelope Valley Water Company filed for a right of way for a water
canal which was never built and the right of way was withdrawn in 1910. From
1910 until 1921, the Sespe Light and Power Company filed, but again the
company never did any ground construction. It was just all on paper.

Several camp locations are scattered on a flat at the top of a steep bluff
that forms the north bank of the Piru Creek. All along the bluff are signs of
gold placer mining.

The camp and surrounding area receives a lot of motorcycle use. There are no
facilities in the area.

Area amenities: tent camping, trailer camping, picnic tables, toilets,
parking.

Please back out trash and bring your own water.

and 23 miles west of Frazier Park.



Day hiking in the Thorn Point area:

Trail distance: 3.46 miles

Thorn Point is located in the Sespe Wilderness, within the _Los Padres_
National Forest.  About 20 miles southwest of Frazier Park, 90 miles from Los
Angeles. This peak has a Lookout tower is very weathered has seen better days,
but the tower can still be accessed via a small ladder. This is one of the
last Lookout towers still standing in the Los Padres, it would be nice to see
this tower restored. The tower gives you a 360 view that is very spectacular,
best seen in early hours of the morning but is also a great place to watch the
sunset. The Thorn Point trail has interesting rock formations, large pine
tress, and views in all directions, the trail is good shape and easy to
follow.

W. H. Thorn was an early day surveyor with the U. S. Geological Survey that
mapped the central Ventura County area in 1905. Both the meadow, camp and
point were named for him. During a drought cattlemen brought their cattle up
to find feed and water. The Snedden Land and Cattle Company ran cattle in this
area along Piru Creek.

Thorn Camp was established in 1961. At the camp there are 3 camp sites with
tables and stove,one is across the creek. No water or toilets available. There
is a public horse corral. The camp and meadow are located at the start of the
steep horse Trail 21 W07 which leads from the end of the right fork of Grade
Valley Road. The trails goes up the north tee of the mountain to reach the
abandoned Thorn Lookout.

When the lookout was manned during the fire season a pack train of Forest
Service mules made the trip carrying supplies, mail and water to the lookout
person. The tower is in poor shape and no longer manned during the fire
season.

## Overview

Hammock spots, dipping holes and a fishing stream make Reyes Creek Campground
an ideal hideaway. Located near the Sespe Wilderness alongside Reyes Creek you
will find renewal and replenishment, Reyes Creek-style.

## Recreation

Trail hiking, fishing, swimming, group camping, mountain biking, hunting,
horseback riding, nature viewing, and recreational mining are favored
activities. Day trips to higher elevation snow play in the winter is also
enjoyed.

## Facilities

Reyes Creek Campground has 24 generously spaced campsites, ideal for tents,
pickup truck campers, small RVs or small van conversion campers. RVs over 22
ft. are not recommended. Please bring all the water you will need for your
stay as there is no water available. Six vault toilets service the campground.  
  
The road through the campground is narrow in places so RVs should be aware of
obstructions and difficult angles into the campsites.

This shaded streamside campground located at 3,500 feet elevation boasts an
ample supply of riparian oak and cottonwood trees. The creek area is well
shaded and runs year-round. Overhead you may catch a glimpse of red-tailed
hawks soaring above the trees. If you are lucky, you may see a California
condor!

Located south of Ozena Valley, this campground provides access to the Sespe
Wilderness via the Reyes Creek Trail linking to the Piedra Blanc National
Recreation Trail. This site is the trailhead for Gene Marshall-Piedra Blanca
National Recreation Area ideal for hiking or mountain biking.
