Overview

Meeks Bay Resort has a long tradition as a family vacation and holiday retreat. It is located on western shore of the famed Lake Tahoe (Da ow aga), far away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The Washoe Tribe has been a part of the Meeks Bay area of Lake Tahoe (Da ow aga) for many millenium. Their link to the land is an important part of the Meeks Bay Resort charm. It is the perfect spot to recharge those drained reserves and immerse oneself in the spectacular rustic environment.

Enjoy the sandy Meeks Bay beach, or rent a kayak or paddle board and venture out onto blue waters. Explore the hiking trails that lead both north and south along the lake as well as the Meeks Bay Trail which climbs into the Sierra Nevada Desolation Wilderness Area to Phipps Pass and beyond. The Resort has abundant Day-Use parking and a grill for the hungry camper. Stop by the main building for supplies, toys and clothes, and perhaps a chat with one of the Washoe Tribe members.

The resort offers all levels of vacation facilities from the historic Kehlet Mansion and the Washoe House, several cabins and lodges, full hookup RV spots, and standard tent campsites. Many couples have begun their wedded life together and families regularly hold their reunions at the Resort. Group reservations can be made on Recreation.gov or by phone to the call center.

Meeks Bay Campground is now an integral part of the Meeks Bay Resort.

Recreation

When most people imagine what to do at Lake Tahoe, they think outdoor activities. Enthusiasts will find hundreds of miles of trails to hike, bike, and ride horseback. The Meeks Bay Resort provides sunbathing, beach play, swimming, and scuba diving.

Kayak and paddle boards can be rented onsite. While motorized craft are not allowed in the bay, boating and water skiing are readily accessible elsewhere on Lake Tahoe.

Anglers can land the big one at dozens of spots. Kokanee salmon and mackinaw, rainbow, Lahontan Cutthroat and brown trout are found throughout the area. The Washoe Tribe has actively helped improve the population of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (Ɂímgi).

Facilities

Lodging:

The Kehlet Mansion provides seven bedrooms, three bathrooms and a full size kitchen. Enjoy the private deck, picture windows, and a full event area for weddings, reunions and special events.

The Washoe House, also known as the Point House, offers three bedrooms, one bathroom, and a separate studio cabin. Located on the south shore of the bay, it offers unmatched privacy.

12 Lodges with studio, one and two bedroom floorplans. All units have kitchens with utensils and cookware.

7 standalone cabins with studio, one and two bedroom floorplans. All cabins have kitchens stocked with utensils and cookware.

Camping:

14 Non-electric campsites for tents and small pop-up trailers found north of Meeks Creek.

40 Non-electric campsites for tents and small pop-up trailers on the southern side of the Meeks Creek.

23 RV sites with full hookups north on the northern side of Meeks Creek. Several are pull through and can accommodate up to 60 feet of tow vehicle and RV.

Food and shopping:

The Wa She Shu Grill offers a great selection of lunch meals and snacks from 11:00am to 3:30pm daily.

The General Store offers an assortment of clothing, souvenirs, firewood, ice, snacks, beverages, coffee, ice cream and sundries. It is open every day from 8:00am to 8:00pm.

Other offerings:

Kayaks and paddle boards are available for hourly, half day and full day rental.

Hot private shower facilities are available with purchase of tokens from the general store.

Several public restrooms with flush toilets are available.

Natural Features

Meeks Bay (mayála wáťa) is located on the west shore of Lake Tahoe at a 6,225-foot elevation and is surrounded by many of Lake Tahoe’s most famous attractions. You won’t need to go far to experience the iconic views that travelers come from around the world to see. The abundant natural features include snow covered peaks of the Sierra Nevada, forested mountainsides, green meadows, miles of pristine shoreline, and impressive granite boulders. The azure lake is rimmed by footpaths, hiking and biking trails. Don’t miss the spectacular views of De ek Wadapush (Cave Rock) across the lake from the beach of mayála wáťa (Meeks Bay). The more adventurous hiker can traverse the Tahoe Rim Trail which offers panoramic views of the basin. Or one can venture deep into the Desolation Wilderness to Phipps Pass from the Meeks Bay Trailhead.

Charges & Cancellations

If I book this reservation today, what are my options to change or cancel?

Please remember that reservations at these facilities prevent other visitors from using these sites. Planned changes to your stay should be made as far in advance as possible. You can make changes to your reservation ahead of your arrival date in Reservations.

Changes

If your new stay dates are completely different from your original stay dates, there is a $10 change fee (per reserved site). There are no additional fees for:

Adding or removing nights to your stay.

Changing to a different campsite.

Balances will adjust based on your new stay's nightly rate.

Changes on or after the arrival date are made at the discretion of Resort Management and may result in forfeit of rental fees.

Cancellations

Meeks Bay Resort will require a non-refundable down payment on all lodging, RV and Tent sites. Reservations will require a down payment equal to 50% of the full daily rental rate. The remaining balance must be paid no later than 30 days prior to check-in. The Recreation.gov site will send the guest up to two reminder emails with links to facilitate payment. Those emails are sent seven days and 24 hours before the 30 day deadline. Down payments are non-refundable.

If you do not complete the payment by the 30 day deadline, your reservation will be cancelled and the down payment forfeited.

If you place a reservation 30 days or less prior to check-in, you must pay the down payment and the remaining rental fee at the time of reservation. If you cancel after that point you will be responsible for the $10 cancellation fee and forfeit the down payment. If you cancel within 14 days of the check-in date, you will forfeit the down payment and one day at the rental rate, as well as the $10 cancellation fee.

This is an automated process and Meeks Bay Resort personnel cannot make changes.

Late Check-in and No Show

Meeks Bay Resort will hold any paid reservation until the following day at check-out time. Your reservation will be cancelled with no refund. If you have not checked in by that time or contacted Meeks Bay Resort Management to request one additional day to arrive.

From the south, take Highway 89 north out of South Lake Tahoe. From the northeast take Highway 28 to Highway 89 south. From Truckee take Highway 89 south.

Beautiful views of the lake, so close to the beach. Cabin had everything we needed: hot running water, shower, bathroom, fridge, stove, cooking utensils, bedding, table and chairs, outdoor picnic table and fire pit.

I had booked a whole week & ended up leaving to outer loop with friends after 2 nights. The highway is literally over our heads- headlights, car engines, car breaks. Not a good spot to camp. Yes the map did show the road next to camp but I didnt think it would be too close & it is. The people on camp 25 ended up leaving too because of the same reason. Camp sites are too close to each other, that was another down side. Yes, it is an active bear camp & will snoop around your camp. There are no showers in this end & would have to drive to outer loop where main entrance is to shower. Ask for shower coins ahead of time because they are gone quick! 4 min shower only & $2 per coin. We ended up leaving to Tent#7 & Tent#4 on outer loop & there are no car noise there ! Still bear sights though. Beach is close to both outer loop & south loop but outer loop has a lot more access to things. South loop only has restrooms but no showers & outer loop has restroom, showers, restuarant, & the store on the main entrance. The beach isnt just for us campers but public can pay $15 for day use so if you plan to be at the water, save your spot early ! My family has verizon & we were the only ones with reception, everyone else didnt & we were 20 of us & only 3 had signal. You would have to go by the water or by the restaurant to receive some type of signal. Other than than that we had a blast camping but just giving a heads up for those future campers!

Didn't realize staying on the "poor side" of the resort meant no showers, no mini mart, main beach side access, front desk access or resturant access. Do your research on what side you camp on before coming here or else you'll be driving across for a shower 👎🏻

The staff was very inconsistent in their demeanor and disposition. Some were very pleasant and friendly, while some seemed unhappy and looking to cause conflict when clear communication would have avoided any interaction at all. The campsite and beach are beautiful. If you are bear-aware you should not have any issues. Love Meeks!

We stayed here the first week of July and had an amazing experience. The location was perfect, with direct access to the lake just steps from our campsite. The restrooms were conveniently located and consistently kept clean and tidy throughout our stay. Yes, there were some bear sightings, but they were not a direct threat. As long as everyone follows the campground's bear safety guidelines and stores food properly, it wasn't an issue. In fact, seeing bears from a safe distance made the experience even more memorable and exciting for our kids. We only wish we could have stayed longer. We'd definitely come back and highly recommend this campground to anyone looking for a beautiful lakeside camping experience.

Resort was clean, the camp hosts were friendly and helpful. We loved the beach, which was a short walk away. Like any other public campground, no one enforces the sound rules. Would be nice to have an official dish-washing station: the hodge-podge of rules were hard to follow (e.g. "no dish washing in sink"; "dump dish water into sink").

Our family reunion was made even better because of clean cabins, beautiful Lake Tahoe steps from our door. Book early if you plan your vacation in advance. They were full up when we went, the campground too.

I really enjoyed it. It's a beautiful place. But if you're concerned about bears, you might want to think twice. They roam around there like they own the place, especially in the evening and at night. It's their world.

Love this place! Cabins have been newly renovated and they were great- darling vintage kitchens, comfortable beds, very clean-they were great. The general store is fun to visit and has items you possibly forgot. We found June was a better time to visit, not crowded like our usual July time slot.

Stayed in Cabin 6. LOVELY view. Cabin clean, adequate. Needed space heater at night even in June. Brought my own, never could figure out how to use their heater. Microwave on top of fridge - hard for short person to reach! Shower head would not stay up. Otherwise everything worked. Main issue was bears. Have to be careful to keep all windows closed unless right there to watch. One tried to get in at night, which made my stay a bit nerve-wracking. Nice beach, FULL of people every day, which may explain the plethora of bears. Decent Verizon signal. Like camping at Sugar Pine better, but if you really want a cabin, this is a great location.

I have been coming up to the west shore of Lake Tahoe for over 40 years, and this is the first year we have camped. The campground could not have been better. We loved our site, the proximity to the water, and the bathrooms/showers. Everyone was friendly and helpful! The bear activity took us a bit by surprise, but it definitely added an element of adventure to our camping experience. We will be back for sure!

This site is by far the best in the park. Will definitely return for our future adventures. Fished off the creek. Paddle boarded just behind our camp site and was able to access the lake from there. The bears were out so be sure to clean up all food and secure your groceries in the bear locker. The access to the store is so convenient and the staff are all so pleasant.

Campsites were clean along with the restrooms which have running water, sinks, flush toilets. Easy beach access, we were able to carry kayaks from our site to the beach easily and quickly. We were always able to find a spot on the beach. Fire rings and separate grill. If you purchase firewood from the host or the store at the resort it’s $12 a bundle. Store has all the essential supplies. Sites are a little close together, get noisy in the evenings, but that’s expected at a campground. Bears were active every evening, bear boxes were big enough to fit our 2 coolers and a large tote with room to spare. Dumpsters and a small area to wash dishes in campground. Far enough away from towns to be peaceful, close enough for supply runs if needed. Overall a great experience, will definitely be back.

Unfortunately we were unable to stay at the resort. Apparently the bear box was broken and it could not be repaired until the parts ordered came in. The camp host tried to accommodate me but I food not want to move from site to site every day. I was given a full refund and ended up staying in a hotel for the 3 days while visiting the area. It was unfortunate we couldn’t camp because we had stayed the year before and enjoy our last visit enough to return. I intend to return to the resort in the future. They have a great friendly staff who really tried to help us. Thank you all again. From the young girl working the check in booth, to the the young girl working the gift shop counter. And the nice manager who tried to get us a site. She really tried to help us. And lastly the young man who came out to the site and tried to get us a site for the night. All 4 of these team members were very caring and really tried to help us. Thanks Meeks Bay Team!

Perfect proximity to Lake Tahoe and a beautiful view. The bears are a huge problem though so be alert. The bathrooms and showers were kept pretty clean but didn't always work. Get your tokens before the store closes!

Recommend limit on number of day use people allowed into beach each day. Some days so crowded and if you are paying to stay in resort you shouldn’t have to fight for access.

unfortunately, the bathrooms were not well stocked or maintained . The sites were not posted with the reservations. Our site was occupied when we arrived. I spoke with the camp host who was not helpful. Told us that maybe they needed more time to exit. So we keep checking on our site throughout the day but it was still occupied and no one was at the camp site. When we came back later that day the folks were set up and cooking their dinner. These people were not even registered campers but the camp host was no help so we had to confront the campers. Eventually we able to occupy our site. Someone needs to manage these sites better. Most campgrounds at least inspect the sites and post the reservations.

We enjoyed our time at Meeks Bay. The beach is within walking distance from your site, you can rent kayaks and paddleboards at the office, and the snack bar is delicious. We only wished the snack bar and office stayed open longer as both opened late morning and closed late afternoon. The bathrooms and showers in the campground (not by the beach) were kept clean.

Beautiful site, secluded from other campsites/cabins. However, there were no bear boxes or bear-proof trash cans provided. There was only an open trash can in the cabin and you half to hike quite aways to the nearest bear proof trashcan to dispose of trash. Lo and behold, a bear tried to break in. When we let the staff know, they informed us that a bear tries to break into this cabin every other day. So if you are looking to encounter a bear, by all means, stay here. Otherwise wait until they decide to equip this cabin properly, if they ever do.

Very nice location: quiet, far enough from the hiway, beautiful beach and lake view. Accommodations are so-so: basic, traditional rustic Tahoe. Cleanliness: fair. Shower area had no shower curtain.

Meeks Bay campground is well-run and clean. Meeks Bay itself is stunning and there are plenty of things to do in the area like riding the west shore trail to Sugarpine, paddle boarding, or hiking. I recommend the campground but do not recommend tent site 5. It is right next to the entrance to the bathrooms and wide open. It's surrounded by trees but the trees are all on other sites. There is no privacy, no place to hang a hammock, and people constantly cut through the site, right in front of you, to get to the bathroom. If you are an extroverted person, you might prefer this, but if you were hoping for peace and seclusion, try to get a site as far from the bathroom as possible.

Great campsite with good access to Lake Tahoe. Campfire rings are deep and tables are sturdy. Everything is well maintained. Water and bathrooms and close to campsites. Showers are a little bit of a walk but not bad.
