I left early and wish there was a way to cancel and get your money back after you have checked in. Cabin was great. Stove worked well. I can’t believe how dumb some people are when they complain about there not being sleeping pads and there not being a chef of staff etc. It’s apparent many reviews are written by folks who aren’t from around here.

Cabin was very nice and comfortable. If it’s cold out just need to make sure to bring some extra heating oil .

I know the cabin and location well from multiple uses over the years. This year it wasn't great because of the FILTH of the cabin and cache. We cleaned and disinfected for hours and dealt with an abundance of garbage from previous users.

Cabin would be warmer if the open ceiling was closed off. Meat shed gets too warm. Bunks need pads. Fuel oil drum for stove needs some way to know what the level of fuel is. Would be nice to be able to contact people who are there just before you to ask questions about what is needed at the cabin.

Great cabin. Had a brand new oil drip stove that worked great. Had plenty of space to put gear food and all your other miscellaneous stuff. Had a cribbage board that helped pass the time when the weather was rough.

Very nice accommodations. With salmon in the water, be very bear-aware of your surroundings around the cabin and the top end of the lake. Respect the wildlife and give them plenty of room. Great escape location to get away from technology and take in the environment.

We hiked upstream about 1 miles and located a small waterfall. We also used a pack raft to explore the lake. With the pack raft we went through the short stream of the outlet into another lake. We crossed this lake, went through the short stream connecting another small lake. At the stream flowing out of this lake we pulled the pack raft to the shore and could hear another waterfall. We hiked a couple hundred yards and there it was. Since the small streams connecting the lakes didn't have salmon in them we suspected the lower falls were blocking the salmon from making it upstream.

The Viekoda Bay cabin was fantastic to have for our spring bear hunt. There were 4 of us in the cabin for a week and it offered plenty of space for us and our gear. The 4 bunks had pads on them so we didn't use our inflatables that we brought. For those going in the near-term there is PLENTY of both jet boil and 1-lb propane bottles to use. Also I found a large red funnel buried in the grass to accompany the homemade funnel that we also found which greatly aided in adding fuel to the drum. We saved both for future use and stashed them in the meat shed. We will be back!

Not knowing what to really expect the cabin certainly exceeded expectations. Very roomy and comfortable and served its purpose as the Kodiak weather was just awful while there! Given the weather the location is still a beautiful and wonderful place, and the dry cabin made it so. The Nordic stove was nice but it may need some work, it would not produce a flame as shown and described in video, but it did function thankfully! All in a great experience and a great cabin!

This cabin was a game changer compared to using a tent for several weeks while bear hunting (though glad I can say I "paid my dues" and tented for Kodiak area hunt and didn't just go right to glamping.) Plenty of room for a group of four to six (we had three). The outdoor deck is awesome. I do wish people followed "leave no trace" better. There was a LOT of leftover canned goods, opened sauces and dry goods, alcohol, old bear spray, sleeping pads/mats/pillows, etc.. that previous users left. Folks continuously left their empty fuel tanks (probably 50 plus inside and out) which is just lazy and rude. The cost for the Forest Service cabins has gone up a lot in general last few years and I am sure that has to do with the fact that Forest Service personnel have to clean up after users. The outhouse was very nice, though I do recommend taking lime or another "natural" outhouse treatment to assist in breakdown when the facility goes from zero users to consistent users for a few weeks. The stove was wonderful if you want to fork over the cash. Kerosine is too expensive and diesel stinks. It would be nice if a plain old wood stove would be installed so the more frugal user can run the system more. Plenty of driftwood etc. for burning. It's also a bit of an environmental hazard pouring fuel into the tank (spillage easily happens). The one item I was thankful that someone did not "leave no trace on" was a funnel for pouring fuel into the outdoor tank. Highly recommend this cabin, but please do not tell yourself you are "being kind" by leaving your stuff behind. Take out what you take in so that these cabins can remain in use for future hunters, fishermen, etc..

Very nice cabin, we especially liked the durable and functional countertop. Very easy to clean, as well as convenient shelves for supplies. The river is characteristic of its name 'Little River". Great bear viewing.

The stove needs work. It was yellow flame the entire time. We were not comfortable sleeping at night without a CO monitor, so did not run it while sleeping. Luckily we had our cold weather gear since it got down to 15 degrees one night. I don’t know if someone mixed bad fuel in the tank before us, but we ran it five days and put our JetA in it, so it should have cleared out. Stove needs a maintenance rebuild.

Our stay at the Dead Man Bay cabin was very pleasant. It sits and a well protected cove when the weather is coming from the south or west. We saw lots of Kodiak wildlife, just not that big bear we were looking for. We were the first spring renters, and the cabin was the in great shape. The fuel oil barrel was almost full. It was chilly during our stay, we use about 25 gallons of fuel over our 13 days. And that’s with the stove/heater off for the day time periods while we were out in the field. At night, we turn the heat to low, so it is a bit of an energy hog. Sure beat tent camping for 13 days. Thanks

Grandfather, Father, and Son stayed for 7 days. The cabin is a great size for 3 people. The views are spectacular and we saw an abundance of wildlife. Fishing is great for Dolly Varden. The cabin is well equipped with bunks, shelves, stainless steel counter, table with a map embedded, benches, and a Nordic stove. We were pleasantly surprised to find the bunks have foam mats on them. The cabin is weather tight, we didn’t feel any drafts on the windiest days. Hope to make a return trip sometime soon!!

Although the lake was still frozen, the staff really helped us out and put us in the othe cabin at the north side of the lake. The cabins was super great, perfect size and very peaceful.

The cabin was perfect. People prior to us had left some food and fuel. The weather was extraordinary, and the views spectacular. The beaches were great to explore, especially at low tide. Tides come and go quickly so be careful on the beaches. We tried hiking, but we had to bushwhack quite a bit. The vegetation was quite tall and thick. But overall a perfect secluded spot to enjoy nature.

The vegetation was overgrown around the cabin, making walking very difficult. A fire pit would be a great addition. The cabin was laid out well and had plenty a room for four people.

Perfect cabin for our bear hunt. Stove worked great and the drying rack above was a bonus. Only suggestion would be to replace door latch on cabin and repair bottom of door

Cabin was really spacious set up well. Only used 5 gallons of kerosene in 8 days early may. People have left lots of jet boil fuels and little propane bottles which was nice. Bunks have pads that are real comfortable. Place is air tight even when windy. Could not ask for a better cabin it is really that good.

As always the cabins are in very good condition. Last December I stayed at the Deadman Bay (Alitak) cabin with my middle daughter, son and daughter's significant. This January (2022) I stayed at the Viekoda Bay cabin for another deer hunt. I went down alone to set the cabin up for my daughter and son to fly in a few days later, but, as our weather is yet changing, here on Kodiak Island, there was a tremendous amount of bear activity directly on the beach, in front of the cabin and surrounding hillsides, so I decided, for safety hunt purposes, to leave early and try again next year. Did relax and read 2 books. This cabin does have a loose metal exterior NW side skirt panel that I could not secure, but, appears to be holding so far, in the higher winds, and should be OK till spring when it can be re-secured, and I would suggest a dead bolt be installed on the ocean front door, as a backup to the door knob latch, as the door does not always secure when it appears to be closed. Dead bolt a good idea for Deadman cabin too. Both small items which caused no issues with my stays. Thanks for the opportunity. I will definitely be back! Jack

Four of us stayed in this cabin for a number of days after Christmas 2021. There was plenty of room and we rarely bumped into one another. We ran into a warm stretch of weather and didn't need all the fuel oil we'd taken to the site. The cove provided protection from stormy seas for our plane. We saw seals, sea otters, eagles, an owl, snow bunnies, beaver, ravens, fox, deer and bear. Wonderful trip and wonderful place to stay while there.

A dingy was very good to have. Can’t walk the beach at high tide so getting back to cabin you are forced to hike up and over an alder covered mountain to get back to cabin, if you get stuck on the other side of the cliff due to tide.

Awesome cabin. Outside temps were mid-40’s most of our trip and inside cabin temps averaged about 10 degrees warmer than outside. We rarely used the oil heater as it does take a long time to warm up. We used a buddy heater while eating dinner and to warm up the downstairs bedroom before turning in. Fishing a couple hundred yards off the cabin beaches out near the two points was excellent…even with bacon as bait…caught cod and a ton of sole. Only had a 1lb weight and it was too heavy, 8oz would have been better. Outhouse was starting to shift and may need adjustment soon. Cabin had lots of lots, pans, foil, TP and extra fuel when we left.

The cabin was great. There was a few mattresses there for the bunk beds. The stove is easy to operate and worked well. It did have a small leak that someone should take a look at. We enjoyed out time there!

What an amazing trip. The views are stunning. The heater in this cabin is a life saver. Was -5 one night and would have been miserable in a tent. Only issue is the lake froze and we had to walk out gear 1 mile up the lake to open water.

I live in Michigan and I've rented cabins in the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge 5 times before. Uganik Lake 3 time s and N. Fraser once and a similar cabin in another park system on neighboring Shuyak Island. The experience is so awesome. I can't wait to go back. There is great fishing and sightseeing. You're truly isolated and close to nature. The cabins are always in great shape with everything you need including a reliable stove and such a value. Where else can you get a cabin on a 3 mile long lake in the Fjords with a river inlet and outlet with great Salmon fishing for almost nothing (Uganik Lake cabin) all to yourself? I highly suggest renting a Zodiak to get around the water. I've always had good luck with Kodiak Kamps to rent gear you can't easily take in the plane.

Trip was cancelled due to Covid-19. I have tried following their directions for a refund prior to the trip and now after. The web site will not allow me to do so, it just gives an error message saying that "something went wrong, try again later". I have sent two emails and called twice and left messages. Still no response.

We have been going to this cabin for close to 20 years, and we keep asking for a sight glass or means to dip the tank. It's very frustrating not knowing how much fuel is in the tank, even though we bring in 15 gallons for 10 days. The stove needs work as well, and the stack needs a different cover. If the wind blows just right, it will blow out the stove, and by the time you realize it, there is a puddle of fuel on the floor and in the bottom of the stove. If someone isn't very knowledgeable, this could start a fire. These are all things we have brought up for YEARS, and no one is listening.

We had an amazing time at the Viekoda Bay cabin! We had a zodiac, which was very useful for pretty much everything that involved leaving the cabin. It was quite necessary to keep an eye on the tide; we almost got stuck with tide changes a couple of different times, particularly when we took the zodiac up inlets. It was fun to explore the nearby little islands (which you can walk to at low tide, but plan on getting wet), nearby creeks, and around the bay. There was abundant wildlife, and the sea otters and seals entertained us from the porch. The cabin was very well maintained and fitted out quite well with things that past visitors had left.
