Directions
The campground is 13 miles west of the town of Independence, California. Take U.S. Highway 395 to Independence. Turn west on Market Street, which turns into Onion Valley Road. Follow Onion Valley Road for 13 miles to the campground.

The campsite was very slanted; hard to find a level spot. A bear visited the area so it is key to keep food secured.

enjoyed the rustic camp sites. good access to water in mid-August. bathrooms were clean. no complaints!

Campsite 5 has no shade and is small. The bear box gets so hot you need a towel to unlatch and your items inside are cooked. I was there during a heat wave which made it worse.
It was posted that there was no camp host.
The campground was relatively quiet. The bathrooms were kept exceptionally clean.

Be sure to carefully look at the campsite pictures, site 10 is right next to the pit toilets. Quite smelly! Also the campground is being overrun with Aspen sprouts ( baby trees ) , many of the fire rings are covered with Aspen. During the season the campground is busy with hikers coming and going as Independance is a popular resupply for thru hikers.

Great place to set up for hiking into the backcountry, plenty of parking and bear boxes. It is a dry camp, so bring water, or you can filter water from one of the creeks.
