The campground is located near a small impoundment, however the impoundment is
not a popular site for fishing. The busiest use is the North Country National
Scenic Trail trailhead located in the campground. In the winter this site is
plowed and provides access to the Ward Hills Snowmobile Trail. ORV use is
prohibited in the campground.

Definition: **The Pere Marquette National Scenic River Corridor** is a defined
strip of land varying in width, on both sides of the river, beginning at the
Forks of the Middle Branch and the Little South Branch of the Pere Marquette
River in Lake County, Michigan, then continuing downstream through Mason
County to U.S. Highway 31 at Ludington. The river corridor is identified in
the Federal Register Notice, Volume 45, No. 75 dated Wednesday, April 16,
1980. For the purposes of this Order only that portion of the river corridor
within the Forest’s boundary is shown.

**A self-contained recreational vehicle** is a vehicular unit, other than a
mobile home, designed as a temporary dwelling for travel, recreational, and
vacation use, which is either self-propelled or is mounted on or pulled by
another vehicle including: travel trailer, camp trailer, folding tent trailer,
or motor home. Tents or cars are not considered self-contained recreational
vehicles.

**A watercraft** is defined to be a tube, canoe, kayak, raft, drift boat,
personal float tube, or any other vessel that can carry people down a river.

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50 (e) the following persons will be exempt from the
order:

  1. Any Federal, State, or Local officers, or members of an organized rescue or firefighting force engaged in the performance of an official duty. 
  2. Persons with a valid permit in their possession signed by the District Ranger or Forest 
  3. Supervisor specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission. 
  4. Individuals identified as exempt in other agreements or (MOU’s) Memorandum of Understanding. 

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions set forth in 36
CFR 261, Subpart A. This order will be reviewed every five years to determine
if the regulations are still applicable for proper management of the area
described. The prohibitions will be in effect from the date of this order
until specifically withdrawn by termination order of the Forest Supervisor.

Pere Marquette National Scenic River Restrictions

This campground is located in the middle of the 66-mile Scenic portion of the
river. The camps are set back from the river in openings within a forested
setting. As paddlers travel down the river they will see many meadows and
locations to fish. Some campers will park at Upper Branch Bridge and walk to
the campsites from there. This is a very popular fishing area.

Bowman Lake Campground

This area not only has the Pere Marquette River running through it, but also
contains a portion of the North Country National Scenic Trail and habitat for
the federally endangered Karner blue butterfly.

The Bowman Lake area is located in Lake and Sweetwater Townships in Lake
County. A total of 1,145 acres of NFS lands and 368 acres of private lands are
within the boundary of the Bowman Lake area.

The terrain is characterized by rolling hills, glacial depressions and
leatherleaf bogs. A 3-acre lake is located within the area. The area tends to
be densely forested with a mix of hardwoods, red and white pine and aspen.
Wildlife species that commonly inhabit this area include white-tailed deer,
bobcat, coyote, red fox, raccoon, porcupine, squirrels, pileated woodpecker,
ruffed grouse, wild turkey and various songbirds.

Visitor recreation activities include camping, fishing, mushroom gathering,
bird-watching, hunting, hiking and canoeing. Mountain biking and horseback
riding are also common uses on the area trails. Although trails are not
groomed in the winter, the area is popular for snowshoeing and cross-country
skiing.



The Bowman Lake Trailhead serves as a main entry point onto the North Country
National Scenic Trail (NCT). A 3-mile segment of the NCT is located within
this area and mountain biking is allowed on this section of trail. In
addition, a small trailhead is located on NFS Road 6267, giving access to the
Bowman Lake Campground Trail, which is approximately 7.5 miles of loop trail
designed for nonmotorized recreation.

This trail system can also be used by mountain bikers and horseback riders.
Four improved campsites are located on Bowman Lake. Segments of the State of
Michigan snowmobile trail system and Michigan Cycle Conservation Club Trail
(MCCCT) system are located immediately south of the area.

Marquette River. With a selection of shaded and secluded spots, the campground

first in Michigan, and it regularly attracts many canoeing, kayaking and
fishing enthusiasts. The 66-mile stretch of river begins east of Baldwin and
empties into Lake Michigan at Ludington.

A major draw to the campground is world-class fishing. The free flowing river
maintains large populations of resident brown trout, steelhead and salmon.
Gleason Landing marks the start of a zone for fly fishing and catch and
release only. Reel fishing is available upstream. A boat ramp is located
within the campground.

available in Baldwin. A permit is required to float the river from Memorial

This river access is on the flies only, catch and release portion of the
river. The river bottom is mostly gravel and is a very good area for brown
trout. The path to the river borders posted private land on one side before
reaching the stairs to the river. The stairs to the river are steep, and will
be a workout for those who make the attempt.  The pine and oak forest is a
good area for wildlife watching and visitors may see a deer or two while
heading to the river.

Claybanks Campground

This area is popular for canoeing, fishing and camping. The camping area is
near the south branch of the Pere Marquette River, on Whelan Lake.  The land
surrounding the lake is primarily federal ownership.

Whelan Lake Area

Located on the Little Manistee River, this campground is completely surrounded
by National Forest System land. There is a short interpretive hiking trail
with foot bridges from the campground through a hemlock and birch forest. The
campground is loctated near wetlands and many fields, making it an excellent
area to view wildlife. Canoeing is not recommended on this portion of the
river as it is very shallow, however, this area is popular with angerls
seeking trout.

Under the authority of the Act of Congress of June 4, 1897, as amended (16 USC
551), and the Secretary of Agriculture’s Regulations 36 CFR 261.50(a) and or
(b), the following acts and omissions are prohibited on the North Country
National Scenic Trail of the Huron-Manistee National Forests.

  1. Riding, hitching, tethering or hobbling a horse or other saddle or pack animal (except llamas). 36 CFR 261.58 (aa) 
  2. Entering or being in the area, while possessing or using a saddle, pack or draft animal (except llamas). 36 CFR 261.55 (c)

  1. Operating a motor vehicle, snowmobile, ATV, ORV or bicycle on a trail 36 CFR 261.55 (b) **

**Area Description:** The North Country National Scenic Trail on the
Cadillac/Manistee and Baldwin/White Cloud Ranger Districts of the Huron-
Manistee National Forest.

Beginning at the boundary of the Huron-Manistee National Forests with the Pere
Marquette State Forest in Section 13 of T23N-R13W and proceeding south to the
trail terminus in Section 32 of T13N-R13W. The distance of the North Country
Scenic Trail on the Huron-Manistee National Forests is approximately 118
miles.

**Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50 (e) the following persons will be exempt from the
order:**

  1. Any Federal, State, or Local officers, or members of an organized rescue or firefighting force engaged in the performance of an official duty. 
  2. Persons with a valid permit in their possession signed by the District Ranger or Forest Supervisor specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission. 
  3. Individuals identified as exempt in other agreements or (MOU’s) Memorandum of Understanding. 

**Violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than
$5,000 and imprisonment for not more than six (6) months, or both under the

Located on the south side of Nichols Lake, the campground and surrounding area
offer excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, picnicking, hiking,
camping, or just relaxing.

## Recreation

Fishing and boating are popular activities at Nichols Lake. There is a paved
boat launch at the campground. This site is one of the locations on the
National Forest's for Kids Fishing Day Events for Michigan's Free Fishing Day
in early June. Ice fishing is also popular in the winter. Swimming areas are
marked with buoys, but there are no lifeguards. The North Country National
Scenic Trail goes through the site near the boat ramp, providing good hiking
opportunities.

## Facilities

Nichols Lake has 29 family sites on paved spurs. Drinking water, flush
toilets, and showers are provided. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table.
A wood ramp and stairs lead down to the lake from the campground. A short path
along the lake provides access for fishing.

## Natural Features

At 160 acres, Nichols Lake offers shore, pier, and boat fishing. Typical fish
species available include bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, black crappie, and
northern pike. There is a swimming beach and accessible fishing pier
available.  
  
Those wishing to enjoy the day at Nichols Lake will find a day use area
located on the north side of the lake.

Shelley Lake is a 15-acre lake, surrounded by National Forest land, the
family-style campground is the only access to the lake. A foot-bridge over the
creek leads to one of the sites. This campground is very popular during
