Thomas Canyon

I love Lamoille Canyon. It is a beautiful place with killer geology. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is the campground is sort of weird and not set up really for tents. The tent pads are small, and they seem to be gravel covering asphalt. So you can't get the tent pegs in. There is also little shade. There is also no campground host. I miss the old days when there was a friendly retired person holding down the fort. A lovely man called Gary did come by to sell wood which was nice. The other thing that gets tired is that all the sites are booked out, but people don't show. Recreation.gov kinda ruined camping that way. But as a result, it was very quiet.

The campground is not kept up. Absolutely no shade in heat of summer in many sites. No host present when it says online there is a host.

Camping here is next level awesome!

Thomas Canyon Campground is a beautiful place to camp. The sites are secluded because of the vegetation. Hiking up to Lamoille Lake the flowers were beautiful. Will definitely go there again.

Have camped here numerous times and always enjoy. The new payment kiosk is disappointing because it does not allow input of site number or take national parks senior pass. Also, the campground was overgrown & needs some love. Picnic tables are in terrible shape. Bathrooms are very clean. No camp host this year.

The campground was nice, but I was hoping for a shaded campsite. The campsite details online said this was shaded. I would describe this site as full sun. The fire ring and BBQ were right next to some long grass. I would think they would remove some of the grass and branches, or move the fire pit and BBQ farther away from the foliage. This was a fire risk. Other than these, it was a nice campground. Very quiet on the July 4th weekend. There is a lovely creek that runs through the campground.

Very good sites for tent campers. The sites not designated for RVs have excellent privacy from other sites nearby.

Thomas Canyon is a great campground. Lots of trees and shade. The grounds and the toilets were clean. You can hike up Thomas Canyon from camp and is a beautiful hike. Only 5 miles to the Lamoille trailhead at the end of the road.

Wonderful scenery, hiking, perfect for us for 4 days late June. Outcrops were clean. Water easily accessible, campsites lovely,

Thomas Canyon is a gem that never fails to impress. The canyon and the river are gorgeous. I was a tiny bit dismayed that there was not a campground host this year. Other than that, all good.

Toilets were in dire need of cleaning. The floors were filthy. No toilet paper when we first got there but the ranger did come around and fill TP a little later. We walked around all 3 loops. Our site was level but many sites in loop B were on a good slant.

Site 11 backed right up to the creek which was delightful! After a long day of hiking, it was great to soak our feet in the cold creek. Bathrooms nearby were clean and did not smell at all. We had a great experience here and would come back again!

Canyon is beautiful; quiet; creek was flowing and stars were abundant!! Private campsites

Our stay at Thomas Canyon was great. The camp was clean and quiet. Close to the hikes we wanted to do. It was perfect for our road trip!

Love this place. The trees are amazing! Sadly, I forgot my hummingbird food for my feeder. The hummers were zooming all around!

This is a lovely campground in a stunningly beautiful setting, but it needs some loving care to maintain. Nature is reclaiming the sites rapidly in the absence of a host and dearth of forest service personnel.

Nice sites, beautiful area, what more could you need?

This campground is just amazing. The scenery is breathtaking no matter what spot you are in. Campspots are so private and spaced far apart from each other with vegetation between them. It is off-grid camping, but plenty of water faucets strategically placed around all loops of the campground. Remember: there is zero cell service.

Each campsite is pleasantly secluded because of all the trees, and the creek running through was lovely to look at and to hear. Bathrooms were clean and water was available. The canyon and mountains offer a nice vista, as does the hike that goes up from the campground to some waterfalls. There were a few yellowjackets that were annoying when we first arrived, but they had disappeared by the time we were cooking dinner.

Site was well maintained. Rangers were very friendly. Environment was stunning to say the least

Love going up and visiting Lamoille canyon but definitely wish people would turn off their generators at a reasonable time. There was no camp host at the time and hearing loud generators running until 1 am was ridiculous

We were surprised by the sheer beauty of this area. It would have been nice to have hook-ups but it’s understandable that they don’t since it’s in a remote canyon. The road in was paved. Hope to stay here again.

Simple campground in a beautiful place. No bells and whistles offered or needed. Thomas Canyon hike a delight. 5 miles round trip in the Ruby Mountains.

We love this campground. It’s a relaxing place to come to get away, quiet and peaceful. Each time we stayed here it was extremely clean. There are lots of hikes available.

With no camp host the bathrooms were only cleaned and restocked with toilet paper once during our stay. At the very least someone should check every couple of days and restock. The women’s bathroom on b-loop the door was locked half the time. Think the door handle needs replaced. Just seemed poorly maintained.

The campgrounds have not been trimmed, the grasses are way too high around the firepits, the trees are not trimmed and are encroaching on the roadways and camping pads. The toilets have not been pumped out, some are so full they had to locked up. Why are they being locked up instead of being pumped out? The campground has been under a 'no host available' situation for most of the summer. Without a host nothing is being maintained, including the toilets that are still open running out of toilet paper and not being cleaned for more than a week at a stretch! A few years ago the campground was well maintained, the last two years they have been allowed to fall into a state of disrepair. Very sad that LaMoille Canyon draws people for 100's of miles to come and find it it the shape that it is now. I have been coming to this canyon since before it was paved, please do something to help it back to the splendor we have come to expect. The cost of camping has not gone down, but the quality of the facilities has certainly gone that direction. We talked to a Forest service employee one day, he said he was one of only 2 employees to oversee multiple sites, so he told us 'I don't know what to tell you'. I hope this sad situation can be rectified, if this season then certainly by next year. Please pass my comments on to whoever is overseeing these facilities, if they are not aware of what is happening, they need to be. Thank you for letting me voice my concerns. Mike and Debbie

Campground was well maintained and quiet

OK for camping, some sites have more shade. HIking at the end of the road, and up Thomas Canyon was great.

Camp Host this year did not take notice to the pit toilets, which were so full that the waste touched the base of the white plastic you sit on. His solution was to just lock the door and not leave a note to why it was locked. Then he was unaware of two volleyball sized hornet nests up by the other pit toilets. The nests were active. His idea was to cut them down into a garbage can. Then he thought to call the Forest Rangers. When we left the nests were still there and the pit toilet still locked with no note. Then the host didn’t quiet a group playing dance music after night. The site is beautiful. The host change every year.

One of the most beautiful places my wife and I have ever been…..and I’ve been to the real Alps!! This awesome place out in the middle of Nevada was unreal and the hikes were fantastic!! We are going to try and get a spot in late spring when even more waterfalls are running and snow is hanging on the cathedral walls surrounding the camp grounds.

Beautiful views! be warned, camp sites are pretty small, 1 small to med tent will fit in most tent pads max.

Great location with great views! A stream runs through the campground, and you can swim in it!

This campsite is one of my favorites ever, this spot was just not the best. It's right off the trail so it feels like there's constantly people walking through your campsite.

Facilities very clean, and campground was well organized with clearly marked spots. The only issue is that it seems to be common practice for people to place “reserve” tickets at first-come-first-serve spots. Many had handwritten payment tickets to “hold” spots for dates that were in the future, but these were different than the printout reservation slips.

Two adults and two children in our family enjoyed our site with room for our vehicle and two tents. There was shade later in the afternoon (Site 29). We hiked from the trailhead nearby - steep at first, but beautiful. Restrooms were stocked and cleaned a few days earlier. The drawback was the lack of camp host for support when we arrived at our designated time and the previous occupants had stayed on, thinking that they had a longer reservation. Actually, they had reserved another site and had expected to move, but didn't have clear records where they were supposed to go. Within a half hour, they cooperated by moving and finding the correct site with their name.

Nice secluded & quiet campground. Quiet, that is, except for the soothing sound of the river coursing through the camp and tumbling over rocks on its way. Dark sky is great for observing the heavens. Recommend hiking the Thomas Canyon trail from the campground and driving further up the canyon from the camp to see meadows and beaver dams & lodges. Pit toilets in the campground are adequate, and water spigots are conveniently located to collect water for filling fresh tanks. We stayed in site 3 with a 35’ bumper pull travel trailer. Our site had a nice concrete pad for the picnic table, camp grill, and our camp chairs.

Great camping spot. Bathrooms are easily accessible and clean. Water available at spikets. River was nearby. Hiking trail was excellent beside river/up canyon right at campground. Camp table was in great condition. Friendly campers and close to town.

Beautiful Ruby Mts and rugged trails a gem for camping in Thomas Canyon. I believe lack of camp host a negative a negative to a somewhat remote location.

We had a very pleasant six nights at Thomas Canyon CG recently. The only thing that detracted from our experience was confusion concerning the water there. The posting on Rec,gov indicated that the water system was "temporarily out of service", and that campers should arrive with all the water that they would need for their stay. Upon our arrival at the CG, we found the water system working. However, there was no indication as to whether the water was drinkable or not. As there was not campground host on site, we spent most of our trip not using the available water from the taps. Finally, we were able to verify that it was drinkable by asking a Forest Service staff member. A simple notice on bulletin board would have been sufficient to convey this important information. The Forest Service could have done a better job in posting this key information! the only thing that detracted

Campground is overgrown and needs vegetation maintenance. No camp host. No firewood for sale. Our site (#19) had very little space for play.
