Repair work on the one-lane section of Lamoille Canyon Road in the Ruby Mountains will begin Mon., Aug. 24. For the first three weeks, the road and all recreation sites will remain open, but travelers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Starting Sept. 14, Lamoille Canyon Road will be closed to all vehicle traffic above Lions Camp Lamoille for approximately one month. Crews will be reconstructing the roadbed and retaining wall, installing a new culvert, and repaving that section of road. Visitors will still be able to walk the canyon, and all trails will remain open through construction. The Thomas Canyon campground and Terraces recreation site will also be closed for the season after Sept. 14. Powerhouse day use area will not be closed but may be affected by traffic. Work should be finished by the end of October.

Overview

Terraces Overnight Group Area is a popular location for weddings, church activities, family reunions and company picnics. It is located in scenic Lamoille Canyon, 35 miles southeast of Elko, Nevada. Visitors enjoy fishing in Lamoille Creek and hiking on many local trails.

Recreation

Lamoille Creek runs just outside the picnic area and is a popular stream among fly-fishermen. The creek contains brook and wild rainbow trout.

Lamoille Canyon offers numerous hiking and horseback riding trails that lead to alpine lakes and vistas. The canyon road is popular for scenic driving and road biking.

Facilities

This site is a group overnight tent camping area that can accommodate up to 75 people throughout its nine individual family picnic sites or the facility can be reserved as a whole. If not reserved, the individual sites can be used on a first-come, first-serve basis for day use picnics.

Sites are equipped with picnic tables and grills. Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. A large paved parking area can accommodate up to 17 vehicles. Footpaths within the site are also paved.

Natural Features

The campground is situated at an elevation of 8,000 feet, high in Lamoille Canyon, within the beautiful Ruby Mountains. The area is a desert island brimming with wildlife, sparkling lakes and streams, wildflower-filled meadows and jagged peaks.

A dense stand of aspens covers the picnic area, offering partial shade and pretty fall colors. Most sites afford breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and canyon walls.

Directions

Take Interstate 80 to any Elko exit and head south to Idaho Street. Turn south on 12th Street (from the east) or on 5th Street (from the west), to State Route 227. Travel 25 miles on SR 227 to Forest Road 660 (Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway). Travel 10 miles on FR 660 to the picnic area.

This is a group site. People drive in frequently and try to stay in some of the spots, not realizing you have booked the entire site.

Really great campsite with a few non-concrete areas for pitching a tent. It was a little awkward when people came looking for a day use picnic area and we were spread through the whole site.

The location was very private and perfect for our summer camp training for work. We had plenty of space for all out tents and supplies. The place was clean and well kept. Very scenic!

The campground is actually a picnic area, and is set up as such. There are no tent pads. To set up tents, you have to spread out to the edges of the picnic areas, or find clearings. Luckily, this is pretty easy to do. My group had about 30 tents, and there was room for everyone. The site is large, centrally located, and has great views.

Our group enjoyed the site. The only problem was sometimes in the morning there was a terrible gasoline type smell. Might have been from the very nice host who used his generator? Everything was perfect.
