Bucksaw

Overview

Bucksaw Campground sits on the Grand River Arm of the Harry S. Truman Lake in the hills of western Missouri.

The campground is an excellent destination for all types of water recreation.

Click here for the Harry S. Truman Lake virtual tour.

Recreation

Popular activities in the area include wildlife viewing, fishing, hunting, swimming, hiking and boating. For an enjoyable short hike, be sure to check out the mile long hiking trail located across the road from the A & B loop's showerhouse. For more information about this trail upon your arrival, please see the booth attendant.

Bucksaw is an excellent fishing location. Anglers find crappie, largemouth bass and blue and flathead catfish. Truman Lake is also a popular destination for tournament fishermen.

Bucksaw Point Marina is also located next to the park.

Facilities

This large campground offers 146 campsites total. 45 sites are 30-amp; 70 sites are 50-amp with water; 14 sites are 50-amp with water and sewage; and 17 sites are primitive. Amenities include flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water, laundry facilities and a dump station. A boat ramp, playground and swimming beach offer additional recreational opportunities.

Natural Features

Bucksaw is located on a peninsula with primarily flat terrain and excellent lake views. Campsites are well-shaded, while expansive grassy areas are spread throughout the campground.

Wildlife such as whitetail deer, turkey, hawks, ospreys, eagles, and many different water birds can be found in and around the park.

An abundance of fish such as crappie, bass, walleye, paddlefish, blue and channel catfish can also be found in Harry S Truman Reservoir. Approximately 8,800 acres of standing timber were left in the lake to provide quality aquatic habitat.

I have come to Bucksaw since I was a child. This trip was not like Bucksaw use to be. The A-Loop bathroom was never cleaned. There were empty cans in the sinks. Toilet paper everywhere. Stained urinals and toilets. The smell was unbearable. The large gravel in the campsites was a tripping hazard for my elderly mother. Someone left a fly trap in a tree and that smell would blow with the wind. I hope they can return Bucksaw to what it used to be.

While there were Handicap Accessible spots available and we were able to get one, there were no full hook-up sites available for Handicap persons. To me, that doesn't make a lot of logical sense. While the camp hosts were available on Thursday when we checked in, they were not seen during the entire 4th of July weekend. The bathrooms in B loop had so many ants it was uncomfortable to use them. The shower house, while somewhat clean, could have used a little more attention.

Our site was very nice. The only thing I missed from the site I usually reserve was having a sewer hookup. One thing I noticed in the park was the need to perform tree trimming in a general sense to get trees 14 feet off the ground to clear RV's, and our site had a large dead tree that needs removed. During the storms we had roll through, I was worried it would come down on my RV or truck. There were also water channels (ruts) where the site transitions from the pavement that need filled in already. Bathrooms were found to be very clean.

I would give our stay at Bucksaw 5 stars instead of 4, if it were not raining everyday we were there! I give extra towards a higher score, because the Bucksaw on-site managers that were immensely welcoming, and accommodating!

We enjoyed camping at Bucksaw State Park. We had a small family sibling reunion, 4 out of 8 siblings got together and had a great time. As always, the family stories went rampant in a loving manner. The campground was managed well and the grounds was excellent We are considering making Bucksaw amping a yearly event and hopefully a few more of our siblings to the event. We really enjoyed the addition of full hookup section.

We camp here at least a couple times a year. The campground is nice and well maintained. With spacious sites. Love the aluminum picnic tables at each site. So much better than half rotted wooden tables! We have been really disappointed for the last 2 years. This year the path to walk down to the lake was not mowed down very close to the lake and you had to walk through knee high grass for the last 20 yards or so. And we were there when the water was up very high on a normal weekend you would have to walk even further through the knee high grass. Last year they hadn't mowed it at all.

The park attendant was always stopping to the point of harassment at many camp sites, not to mention the 15min talk when we check in about the fire pit.

We were a little reluctant in returning to Bucksaw after unruly stays about 4 to 5 years ago. Campground host’s are fantastic. They want to make the everyone’s stay is enjoyable. Good to have things back to the way they were. Will return.

This was our first time at Bucksaw. We've tried several parks in that area as it is a great destination stay or stopover place to travels further south from Omaha, NE. It's an easy day's drive. We really enjoyed the stay. The park is very well kept in all regards: the sites, the restroom and shower facilities. We have E-bikes and enjoyed the biking opportunities. We will be back. Note: We always stop at Osceola Cheese Factory when in the area!
