Avalanche Campground

Great campground and ideal location by the Avalanche trailhead.

Even though we were close to the main campground road, the site was private enough. Had views of the mountain tops. Plus close to the trail of cedars and avalanche lake trail! The bathrooms were less desirable than ones further into the loop.

If you're doing Trail of the Cedars or Avalanche Lake trail, this is worth it just for the parking. That being said, it's also one of the nicest campgrounds you can stay at, and very convenient to Apgar Village and Lake McDonald (25 mins), without being right in the middle of all that traffic. It was a beautiful campground, with dense tree cover. The mountain views are somewhat limited, but I don't think that's why you stay at this one anyways. Parking at the Trail of the Cedars/Avalanche Lake is almost as bad as Logan Pass, but camping here puts you about 1/10 mile away, so you don't even have to move your vehicle to hike! It's a smaller campground too, which we prefer. If I'm doing a trip around Glacier, this stop is a must. I'd recommend at least two night though, if possible, so you can take advantage of the trails here. Also, you're close to Lake McDonald Lodge if you want to go to hang out, eat, or fish.

Good stay at this campground overall. Just wish I knew where the bathrooms were going to be in relation to our tent site. The lights are pain when trying to sleep. They could just have auto on and off when sensing motion. Would save money in the long run regardless.

The area was well kept up, the rangers were knowledgeable and polite, the bathrooms were very clean. The area was beautiful and very near some of our favorite hikes. I would love to go back!!!

The park is amazing. The camp sites are nice with plenty of room. The bathrooms were close and clean.

The campground is beautiful and well maintained. Other camprgrounds are kind of close but it wasnt uncomfortable. Easy access to the trail of the cedars and lake avavlance trail from camp site. Bathrooms were clean and and freshwater was cold.

I was worried that we were going to be the only tent... the whole came ground was tents. Beautiful trees and the birds sing only the lovely tunes. Bathroom was very clean and recently remodeled.

Avalanche lake trail and trail of the cedars phenomenal. Great midpoint location to access Logan's pass and three falls hikes. Peaceful.

Very cute campground and roomy campsite. Had a good bit of privacy also with trees surrounding the campsite. The hosts, Marlene and Todd, are the absolute best people! They are extremely knowledgeable and welcoming.

Avalanche is a great spot to camp, close to a couple of great hiking trails and away from some of the busier areas.

It is a lovely, quiet campground adjacent to Trail of the Cedars One of our favorite places on earth.

This is a lovely campground for a more traditional camping experience getting away from the big RVs, (nothing against those who use them but being in a little trailer or tent next to one of these can really feel like "camping" in a city parking lot), good tree cover and nicely spaced sites, lots of water spigots and the bathrooms were clean. Being next to the trail of the cedars is lovely as it is a short hike that can be great for an evening after dinner when the crowds are a bit thinner. My only complaint would be that that trail is so popular the traffic just outside the campground is really awful!. We also had trouble finding the campground because the barrier needed to keep day use people out was confusing and it took a bit before we realized it was the campground entrance for those with reservations (which we had).

Great campground with lots of trees for privacy. Shared bear box. Easy walk to the Trail of the Cedars trail (mostly boardwalk) at the entrance to the campground. We had a deer walk up the boardwalk to us before disappearing into the forest - magical!!!

Nice site, decent line of site for Starlink, no cell signal. Near bathroom and dumpster so has some foot traffic but nothing that bothered us.

Great site, probably the best in the campground that I saw. Water right there, next to the trial to Avalanche Lake, totally open to nature in the back. No cell signal and barely any line of site for Starlink. Camp host was friendly. The first 2 nights barely anyone was in the campground which was really nice. Only downside is the insane traffic on the main road can make it really hard to get to the campground before 3pm, but being at the campground makes you appreciate not having to find parking.

Busy and no privacy

The campground was quiet and well maintained. We enjoyed the proximity to Avalanche Creek. Beautiful setting!

Absolutely wonderful campground, the camp host was very attentive to the grounds and facilities.

It was really magical to wake up in the ancient cedar trees! We also liked being so close to Logan Pass - helped us to hit the ground running and get to our overnight backpack without feeling rushed to leave too early. This site number came up and looked like one of the best ones on the map, and it lived up to my expectations.

Great campground w/ just the right "amenities" to make tent camping a tad easier but not make it like glamping for the yuppies

The sites were easy to find. Very clean, no litter / trash etc. The restroom and water access was excellent. And the every popular, very crowded Avalanche trail was lovely. I overheard some campers grumping that there were no lights in the bathroom and that they could not wash their dishes in the gray water dump. I am not sure where these people camp. I generally camp on back country trails with no amenities so this campground was a 5-star hotel. Folks need to understand that it is still "camping" and you need a headlamp and some self reliance. Thanks for an excellent time NPS.

Avalanche Campground was great. We enjoyed its location within Glacier Park. The campground host was always there--he was available and responsive to our questions. The campground was quiet and well-maintained. We really appreciated the quantity of bear boxes for our food and other items that may attract a bear.

For a very crowded park and a completely full campground our site still felt private, people were quiet and responsible.

Very quiet and clean campground with simple pull in site for our camper. Bathrooms clean and well maintained. The proximity to the Avalanche Lake trail was a huge bonus as you won’t have to fight for parking.

Avalanche Campground has a few qualities to recommend it. The sites are spacious, well-shaded and well-screened from neighbors. I thought it was relatively quiet despite being full. The bathrooms were clean and well-maintained. The campground made the rounds 3 times while I was there, answering questions for me and even giving a nearby camper a jump-statrt. It also provides easy access to the excellent Avalanche Lake Trail as well as the easy Trail of the Cedars. It makes for a handy base camp for exploring Glacier NP as it's located partway up the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the park's west side. I've also camped in the larger Apgar campground, and I definitely prefer Avalanche, despite Apgar's proximity to more amenities.

Convenient location, but densely packed and not very photogenic.

Avalanche Campground is my favorite in GNP. It’s a great jumping off point for many of the awesome activities in the park. The campground is well maintained and the camp hosts are great.

Great campground overall! One thing is the bathroom we were next to is in pretty bad disrepair, we were in site B10. But we noticed a few other of the bathrooms were redone and new…hopefully it’s just on the list for fixing up next. Love glacier! Thanks.

i'm so glad that the NP service has campsites released the day before and day of. Glacier NP is majestic!

Very nice campground and great location within Glacier National Park.

Despite the limited availability of reservations available, there were lots of empty campsites. Not sure if these are no-shows? If so, why are they not put back into the system as available? The trip up to Logan Pass was easy from this campround. the Avalanche lake trail is overcrowded, but there are many others in the area.
