This pleasant well developed horse camp is located in a wooded site on the
base of Mount Adams. There is a loading ramp and water for stock only. Water
is not for human consumption. Each site has a highline.  An open field next to
the campground provides space for over flow camping and a beautiful view of
the mountain.  A twenty mile trail system that can lead to Mt. Adams
Wilderness is accessible from the campground.

Horse Camp: Mt. Adams

This site is a small camping site with a lean-to shelter and a fire ring. This
is located in an attractive wooded area on the south flank of Mt. Adams. It is
popular for winter recreation. A trail that is part of the Gotchen Creek Trail
complex used for equestrian use, mountain bikes, and hiking runs near the
shelter.

RV's may park in front of the shelter. There are no actual campsites here, but
there are places for tent camping.

<p>This site is a small camping site with a lean-to shelter and a fire ring. This is located in an attractive wooded area on the south flank of Mt. Adams. It is popular for winter recreation. The Peterson Cabin is located on the Mt. Adams Ranger District, is powered by
propane, and wood heat and can sleep six people. The cabin was salvaged from
demolition in 2014 and moved into place of a cabin that was razed by fire in
2012. The cabin has been meticulously restored and is open year round. Between
December 1st and April 1st the road to the cabin is closed. Parking at
Atkisson Sno-Park is required between these dates and a Washington State Sno-
Park Pass is required. Ski, snowshoe or snowmobilers can access the cabin from
Atkisson Sno-Park.

## Recreation

Many recreational opportunities are within close proximity of the cabin.
Hiking, biking, fishing, hunting and mushroom and huckleberry picking are
popular during the snow-free months. Guests can enjoy cross-country skiing and
snowshoeing during winter.  
  
The Pacific Crest Trail, Indian Heaven Wilderness and Mt. Adams Wilderness are
all within easy driving distance and boast scenic vistas.  
  
Atkisson Sno-Park is approximately 2.5 miles from the cabin and serves as a
portal to the forest's network of 95 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Three
signed, ungroomed cross-country ski loops also depart from the Atkisson Sno-
Park, offering loop opportunities of 4 to 11 miles. Portions of these loops
overlap with each other and the snowmobile trail network.

## Facilities

Peterson Cabin accommodates up to six guests. The rustic cabin's lower floor
has an accessible bedroom with a double bed, a kitchen area and living/dining
room with two loveseats and a fireplace/wood stove insert. Propane lighting
and heating are provided throughout. The kitchen is equipped with a propane
cook top, stove, and refrigerator, pots and pans, dishes and utensils, as well
as a dining table and four chairs. An outdoor picnic table and vault toilet
are on-site. Firewood is provided.  
No water is available during from October through Spring; guests must bring
plenty for drinking, cooking and washing. In the summer months potable water
is available.  
Although the cabin has several amenities, guests do need to provide their own
sleeping bags, linens, towels, dish soap, matches, first aid kit, toilet paper
and garbage bags. Bringing an additional light source in case of emergencies
is also advised.

## Natural Features

A dense canopy of Douglas fir towers over the cabin and huckleberry bushes are
thick in the understory.  
  
Nearby Mt. Adams Wilderness is dominated by its namesake peak. At an elevation
of 12,276 feet, Mount Adams looms over at least ten glaciers, forested slopes
and subalpine meadows.  
  
Wildlife in the area is abundant, including spotted owls, black tail deer,
Roosevelt elk and black bear. The more elusive cougar, bobcat and pine marten
are seen occasionally.

## Nearby Attractions

Guler Ice Cave is one mile west of the cabin. It is filled with spectacular
ice formations that resemble stalactites, stalagmites, columns, fans and
boxwork. The ice is believed to form because the cave acts as a trap,
retaining the heavy cold air that settles into the cave in winter. As the snow
melts above, moisture dripping into the cave forms into ice columns and
masses. The cave is about 650 feet long, with four sections separated by three
ceiling collapses.  
  
The Forest Service has built a stairway down to the cave, but the steps can be
slippery during winter. When exploring the cave, wear warm clothing, boots and
a helmet. Use crampons if you have them. Have three sources of light.  
  
Winter access requires cross-country skis, snowshoes or snowmobile. Many of
the ice formations are just inside the cave entrance, so it's not necessary to
explore deep inside.

## Overview

Sitting just west of Washington's second largest mountain, Mt. Adams, Atkisson
Group Camp is open for campers between May and September and becomes a sno-
park for a variety of activities in winter. The flat, forested terrain makes
Atkisson a popular spot for hikers, mountain bikers and winter sports
enthusiasts.

## Recreation

The flat terrain surrounding Atkisson is ideal for biking and hiking during
the warmer months. Huckleberry and mushroom picking is permitted, and Nordic
skiing and and snowmobiling are popular during the winter.

This group site is a large paved area with plenty of room for RVs. There is a
covered, common picnic building in the center. Atkisson will accommodate up to

In the summer this Sno-Park is the site of Atkinsson Group Camp. Located in a

This site was burned over in the Cascade Creek Fire of 2012. Several primitive
camp sites are available, some along Morrison Creek. The site serves as a
trailhead to the Shorthorn Trail #16 which enters Mount Adams Wilderness and
is within 3 miles of the popular South Climb #183 Trail and route up Mt Adams.
Road access is rough and not recommended for trailers or motor homes.

The site serves as a trailhead to the <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/giffordpinchot/recarea/?recid=31916">Shorthorn Trail #16</a> which enters <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/giffordpinchot/recarea/?recid=79411">Mount Adams Wilderness</a> and is within 3 miles of the popular <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/giffordpinchot/recarea/?recid=31934">South Climb #183 Trail</a>&nbsp;and route up Mt Adams. Road access is rough and not recommended for trailers or motor homes.</p>

Goose Lake is a popular fishing, boating and swimming lake. It is especially
good for children. The lake is stocked with fish several times a season. The
day use area has parking, picnic tables, a vault toilet and a boat ramp.
Campsites are located in level spots on the hillside with attractive views of
the lake. Parking for the sites is on the road side. The sites are walk in and
allow tent camping only.

Small attractively wooded  horse camp with a highline at each site. The
campground has access to several trails including Indian Heaven Wilderness via
the Race Track Trail #171 across the road from the campground. The interior
road is narrow and lacks large vehicle turning radius.

Campground and roads are gravel. Interior roads have tight turns and the camp
sites are small.

## Overview

Oklahoma Campground is nestled in a lush grove of large hemlock, cedar, maple
and fir trees alongside the Little White Salmon River, near the Columbia River
Gorge. The campground is flat and is ideal for smaller groups to camp in
clusters.

## Recreation

Big Lava Bed is located just west of the campground. The trail takes hikers
through a landscape marked by basalt lava formations and pine forest.  
  
The multi-use Monte Carlo Trail is also nearby and can be enjoyed by hikers,
mountain bikers and horseback riders.  
  
Fishing and wading is permitted in the Little White Salmon River, where
anglers can find brook and rainbow trout.

## Facilities

This campground offers some tent-only sites as well as sites for RVs up to 40
feet. Site 12/13 is a double site and must be reserved as such and can
accommodate up to 16 people. Parking spurs are unpaved and may be lumpy.

ALERT: Please be advised that the road (Rt 90) into this campground is unpaved
in sections and not recommended for low-clearance vehicles. Please follow the
speed limit and watch for potholes while enroute. Thank you.

## Overview

Built in 1909, the Gotchen Creek Guard Station is the oldest historic
structure on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and the only building
constructed during the administration of Gifford Pinchot, first Chief of the
U.S. Forest Service and an early conservation leader. Within the state of
Washington, only a few ranger stations of this age survive.

It is a small two-room cabin nestled in a grove of aspen trees at the edge of
a meadow, just a few miles from the Mt. Adams Wilderness. The cabin served as
the administrative headquarters for the Mt. Adams District from 1909 until
1916. The ranger station was built along the primary “sheep driveway” entering
the Forest from the east, which tens of thousands of sheep passed through.

It was formally listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
Gotchen Creek Guard Station ranked among those historic sites “recognized for
their unique contributions to Washington’s heritage.” The National Register of
Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of
preservation.

## Recreation

Many recreational opportunities are within close proximity of the Guard
Station, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, hunting, skiing, and
snowshoeing. The cabin is at the base of Mt. Adams, and near Mt. Adams
Wilderness. Gotchen Creek Trail #40 and Snipes Mountain Trail #11 are both
within close proximity of the cabin.

## Facilities

The cabin sleeps a maximum of 6 people in two areas. There is one double bunk
bed in the main room of the cabin, and there is a second double bunk bed in a
seperate bunkhouse near the cabin. The cabin has propane heat, propane stove,
and a propane refrigerator. Pots, pans, dishes, and cooking utensils are
provided. A vault toilet is located about 20 yards from the cabin. There are 2
battery operated lanterns, but it is suggested you bring additional non-
flammable light sources, such as a headlamp.

There is no potable water at the cabin, and guests are strongly encouraged to
bring plenty for drinking, cooking, and washing. Snow can be melted during the
winter; however, the water must be treated or boiled before drinking.

Although the cabin has several amenities, guests need to provide their own
sleeping bags, linens, towels, dish soap, matches, first aid kit, toilet
paper, and garbage bags. Please pack out what you pack in.

Access in winter months is dependent on snow levels. Access to Gotchen may
require ski's, snowmobile or snowshoes.

## Natural Features

The guard station is located near the base of Mt. Adams, which at 12,276 feet
is the second highest peak in Washington. It is a few miles away from the Mt.
Adams Wilderness area, a blend of dry east-side and moist west-side
ecosystems, allowing diverse types of vegetation and wildlife to flourish.
Multiple trails provide access to spectacular views of Mt. Adams, including
its glaciers, mountain streams, meadows, open alpine forests and lava flows.

Forest Road 8225 served as a stock driveway for many years and was the main
entry into the National Forest from the east. The 1910 Special Fire Report for
the Columbia National Forest stated that more than half of the bands of sheep
that used the Forest passed by the Gotchen Creek Ranger station. The area was

<h2>Overview</h2>
<p>Built in 1909, the Gotchen Creek Guard Station is the oldest historic structure on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and the only building constructed during the administration of Gifford Pinchot, first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service and an early conservation leader. Within the state of Washington, only a few ranger stations of this age survive. </p>
<p>It is a small two-room cabin nestled in a grove of aspen trees at the edge of a meadow, just a few miles from the Mt. Adams Wilderness. The cabin served as the administrative headquarters for the Mt. Adams District from 1909 until 1916.  The ranger station was built along the primary “sheep driveway” entering the Forest from the east, which tens of thousands of sheep passed through.  </p>
<p>It was formally listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Gotchen Creek Guard Station ranked among those historic sites “recognized for their unique contributions to Washington’s heritage.” The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. </p>

<h2>Recreation</h2>
<p>Many recreational opportunities are within close proximity of the Guard Station, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, hunting, skiing, and snowshoeing. The cabin is at the base of Mt. Adams, and near Mt. Adams Wilderness. Gotchen Creek Trail #40 and Snipes Mountain Trail #11 are both within close proximity of the cabin.  </p>
<h2>Facilities</h2>
<p>The cabin sleeps a maximum of 6 people in two areas. There is one double bunk bed in the main room of the cabin, and there is a second double bunk bed in a seperate bunkhouse near the cabin. The cabin has propane heat, propane stove, and a propane refrigerator. Pots, pans, dishes, and cooking utensils are provided. A vault toilet is located about 20 yards from the cabin.  There are 2 battery operated lanterns, but it is suggested you bring additional non-flammable light sources, such as a headlamp.  </p>
<p>There is no potable water at the cabin, and guests are strongly encouraged to bring plenty for drinking, cooking, and washing. Snow can be melted during the winter; however, the water must be treated or boiled before drinking.  </p>
<p>Although the cabin has several amenities, guests need to provide their own sleeping bags, linens, towels, dish soap, matches, first aid kit, toilet paper, and garbage bags. Please pack out what you pack in. </p>

<p>Access in winter months is dependent on snow levels.  Access to Gotchen may require ski's, snowmobile or snowshoes. </p>
<h2>Natural Features</h2>
<p>The guard station is located near the base of Mt. Adams, which at 12,276 feet is the second highest peak in Washington. It is a few miles away from the Mt. Adams Wilderness area, a blend of dry east-side and moist west-side ecosystems, allowing diverse types of vegetation and wildlife to flourish. Multiple trails provide access to spectacular views of Mt. Adams, including its glaciers, mountain streams, meadows, open alpine forests and lava flows.</p>

<p>Forest Road 8225 served as a stock driveway for many years and was the main entry into the National Forest from the east.  The 1910 Special Fire Report for the Columbia National Forest stated that more than half of the bands of sheep that used the Forest passed by the Gotchen Creek Ranger station.  The area was burned over in the Cascade Fire of 2012.  Fire scarred trees and post fire regrowth are part of the adjacent landscape.  </p>
