## Overview

Collins Cove is a first-come, first-served, primitive campground. Each of the
10 camping units have a wooden picnic table, fire ring, and hitching rails.
This grassy campground is shaded with hardwoods, hemlocks, and pines and
offers direct access to horse trails. Centrally located garbage bins and a
vault toilet are available. A creek is located adjacent to the campground as a
source of water for horses, but potable water is not available.

Horse owners need to have a current negative Coggins test certificate for any
horse they take to a public place for recreation use in Virginia.

## Recreation

Collins Cove is in the watershed of Cripple Creek that offers fishing and
wading. The camp provides access to several trails: (4614) Ewing Mountain,
(4504) Mike’s Gap, (4615) Moore, (4601) Raven Cliff and (337) Highlands Horse
Trail.

## Natural Features

The Collins Cove area is shaded with hardwoods, hemlocks, and pines. The
elevation is approximately 2,000 feet. Summer days are warm with temperatures
in the upper 70’s to low 90’s, and evenings cool down typically into the 60’s.

**Definitions:**

l. "Bear resistant container or trash receptacle" means a securable container
constructed of solid non-pliable material capable of withstanding 200 foot-
pounds of energy (using the approved bear resistant container impact testing
machine). When secured and under stress the container will not have any
cracks, openings, or hinges that would allow a bear to gain entry by biting or
pulling with its claws. Wood containers are not considered bear resistant
unless they are reinforced with metal.

  2. ''Food or refuse" means any nourishing substance, solid or liquid (excluding baled hay or water) or refuse thereof, that is not native to the immediate area, which is or may be eaten or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, or promote growth of any person or animal.
  3. "Stored Properly" means

  * Stored in a bear-resistant container or,
  * Stored in a closed vehicle constructed of solid, nonpliable material or,
  * Suspended at least ten feet clear of the ground at all points and four feet horizontally from any supporting limb or pole.
  * Disposed of in bear resistant trash receptacles.

Several prohibitions related to swimming, camping, and parking apply in
Recreation Areas, Day Use sites, and swim beaches on the George Washington and

Prohibitions in designated recreation sites

## Overview

There are 20 camping units available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each
unit has a gravel parking spur, picnic table and fire grill. Some sites have a
pad for tents or pop-up trailers. Recreation vehicles up to 25 feet long can
be accommodated in some sites. A day use picnic shelter with picnic tables and
an open field for sports is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Toilets and garbage cans are provided in the campground and near the picnic
shelter. Drinking water is not available.

FEE: $5 per unit, per night (limit of 8 people and 2 vehicles per unit).

Located in Raven Cliff Campground, enjoy a large shelter for your next
gathering! Along with the amenities of the shelter, it adjoins a large field
for games, the rushing waters of Cripple Creek for wading and fishing, hiking
trails, and the historic Raven Cliff Furnace.

## Recreation

Besides the available primitive campsites, Cripple Creek runs through the
picnic area and is popular for fishing, wading, and tubing. There are large
open fields that are great for sports and picnics.

## Facilities

There are 20 camping units available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each
unit has a gravel parking spur, picnic table and fire grill. Some sites have a
pad for tents or pop-up trailers. Recreation vehicles up to 25 feet long can
be accommodated in some sites. Portable toilets and garbage cans are provided
in the campground. Drinking water is not available.

A wooden picnic shelter that accommodates groups up to 75 people and 15 cars
with overflow parking nearby. No drinking water available. The shelter
contains picnic tables, grill, and parking. There are available vault toilets.

## Natural Features

From the 200-foot sandstone Raven Cliff to the 1810 historic iron ore furnace,
this recreation area is off the beaten path, but worth the effort. Trail 4601
and trail 4616 to the Iron Furnace is destroyed and not accessible to foot
traffic.

## Nearby Attractions

Cripple Creek runs through the area for fishing, wading, or tubing. State
fishing regulations and licensing requirements apply. Raven Cliff Furnace
Trail (4616) begins in Raven Cliff Campground and follows Cripple Creek until
ending at the remains of the old 30-foot-tall Raven Cliff Iron Furnace made
from local sandstone. Raven Cliff Trail (4601) a 1.2-mile trail from Raven
Cliff Campground connects to Collins Cove Horse Campground or Ewing Mountain
Trail (4614). Raven Cliff Trail (4601) is closed due to impacts from Hurricane
Helene.

Recreation Trail by the U. S. Department of the Interior. It is located less
than 5 miles from the cabin and parallels 39 miles of the New River, which is
one of the world's oldest rivers and among a handful of rivers flowing north.  
  
In addition to hiking, biking and horseback riding, the park offers
opportunities for anglers to fish for just about every major freshwater game
fish in the state. While there are no designated swimming locations, tubing,
canoeing and kayaking are all popular ways for visitors to get in and enjoy
the river.

## Facilities

The modern, two-story house can accommodate up to eight people. It has four
furnished bedrooms including one full bed and six twin beds, two bathrooms
with bathtubs, a living room, dining room, and a fully equipped kitchen. There
is a front porch and back patio and a picnic table. Limited dishes, pots and

Electricity and hot water are provided, but the unit does not have a washer or
dryer, air conditioning, a phone or television. Campers are expected to bring
their own bed linens, pillows, towels, flashlight, food, dish detergent, a

This cabin is not professionally cleaned between each renter. Renters are

Scenic Byway; the 5,000 acre Crest Zone, featuring elevations over 4,000 feet,
large rock formations and a herd of wild, free-ranging ponies; and last but
not least, the highest elevated road in the state of Virginia leading to the
summit of Whitetop Mountain.  
  
  
  
A trout stream is located nearby and Hale Lake is about 2 miles away. Hale
Lake is popular among anglers who come to these quiet mountainside waters in
search of a good day of fishing. State hunting and fishing regulations and

The Hale Lake Trail, 0.58-mile loop trail is an easy hike around that lake,
occasionally veering away from the shoreline and into the surrounding hardwood
forests. Birders will probably find this site most productive during

flycatchers. In fall, the lake is likely to invite migrating waterfowl and
shorebirds. Wood duck breed in the area and can occasionally be seen on the

Walker Mountain beside the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway. The East Fork of
Stony Fork Creek winds through the campground, providing a serene setting for
trout fishing and water play for visitors at the welcoming campground.  
  
The 1 mile Stony Fork Nature Trail takes campers through groves of pine and
hardwoods, and the campground loop road makes for a scenic walk, too.

## Recreation

The Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway is an incredible drive for viewing blooms
of rhododendron, azalea and mountain laurel in spring, and fiery red and gold
foliage in fall. Scenic overlooks highlight views of Mount Rogers and many
ridges and valleys. A horseshoe pit at the campground provides hours of fun
for families. Experienced hikers love the Seven Sisters Trail, approximately 5
miles, which leads from the campground to the top of Little Walker Mountain,
then onto the Scenic Byway.

and adjacent to the Big Walker Scenic Byway. The East Fork of Stony Fork Creek

while the campground loop road itself is popular with walkers. For the more
experienced hiker, Seven Sisters Trail leads from the campground to the top of
Little Walker Mountain and back to the Scenic Byway.

Within 10 miles of the campground, hike the popular Appalachian Trail, which
extends more than 2,175 miles throughout the Appalachian Mountains across 14
states. It is the first trail designated as a National Scenic Trail.

## Overview

Stony Fork Cabin is a cozy one-bedroom hideaway with most of the comforts of
home. Visitors can hike, mountain bike, explore the many nearby creeks, or
simply relax on the cabin's private patio.  
  
  
  
The cabin is located within the Stony Fork Campground along the Big Walker
Mountain Scenic Byway. The Appalachian Trail, Seven Sisters Trail, and stocked
fishing streams are all within a close proximity, and the site is easily
accessed from I-77. State hunting and fishing regulations and licensing
requirements apply.

## Recreation

The Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway is an incredible drive for viewing the
blooms of rhododendron, azalea and mountain laurel in spring, and fiery red
and gold foliage in fall. Scenic overlooks highlights include views of Mount
Rogers and the many ridges and valleys.  
  
  
  
Experienced hikers love the Seven Sisters Trail, which leads from the
campground to the top of Little Walker Mountain, then onto the Scenic Byway.

The creek offers trout fishing for campers. State fishing regulations and
licensing requirements apply.

## Facilities

The 900 square foot log cabin has oak hardwood floors, a kitchen, full
bathroom, and a living and dining area. It sleeps up to four guests with two
twin beds and a sleeper sofa.  
  
Cabin amenities include a private patio, cookware and utensils, a toaster,
oven, refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. A washer and dryer are
available in the cabin. Behind the cabin is a picnic table and campfire ring
with grate. Electricity and drinking water is included.

  * The unit does not have air conditioning, a phone or television. 
  * Campers are expected to bring their own bed linens, pillows, towels, flashlight, food, dish detergent, a first aid kit and trash bags. For outside enjoyment, visitors can bring lawn furniture and charcoal for the grill.
  * This cabin is not professionally cleaned between each renter. Renters are asked to bring basic cleaning and paper products (broom, mop, dustpan provided) and leave the cabin in good order for the next renter.

2,400 feet. Its creekside setting provides a peaceful soundtrack of running
water. In springtime, wildflowers and rhododendron dot the region with
spectacular colors, and fall is reliably scenic with its red and yellow
