Dru Barner Campground

Overview

Dru Barner Campground offers 48 campsites that are nestled in the forest just 6 miles from Georgetown, CA. The campground offers access to trails, creeks and is a short drive from some nearby reservoirs. This campground was designed for equestrians, but it can also be used by tent, camper, trailer and recreational vehicles. Common wildlife to the area includes turkeys, deer, bears, coyote and racoons. Portions of the campground have a canopy of trees, but many of the camp units have very little shade.

Recreation

Dru Barner Campground provides some good camping opportunities without having to drive long distances into the forest.

Dru Barner Campground provides access to many non-motorized trails. It also is close to the Rock Creek Trail System that has both non-motorized, motorized, and multiple use trails. Several horse clubs have used Dru Barner Campground as the staging area for equestrian recreation events under special use permits. Several horse clubs have hosted barbecues and taco bars at the group kitchen area after their trail rides. Some couples have used the group kitchen area for weddings.

Stumpy Meadows Reservoir is located only about 15 miles to the east for those seeking water-based recreation. There is a campground concessionaire that operates the Stumpy Meadows Boat Ramp and Picnic Area. A day use fee is charged for those facilities. Stumpy Meadows Reservoir has a 5-mile speed limit for motor boats. Rafts, canoes and kayakers frequently travel on the reservoir. There are some shorelines that provide access for swimming and wading.

Facilities

Dru Barner Campground has camp units equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. The campground roads have gravel surfaces. Most of the parking spurs have gravel surfaces with others having dirt surfaces. The parking spurs vary in length to handle longer trailers and RVs to spurs for a car or truck with a short horse trailer. There is a group kitchen area equipped with two large barbecue grills, two serving tables, a large fire ring and 11 picnic tables that can be rented. Six of the camp units have large bear proof food containers that can hold two coolers. Some of the camp units have horse corrals nearby. There are also hitching posts near some of the restrooms and high line posts between camp sites. The campground has potable water from water faucets distributed throughout the campground. There is a two-unit flush restroom equipped with sinks. There are also two vault restrooms located in the northern portion of the campground.

Natural Features

Dru Barner Campground sits on a ridgeline of the Hornblende Mountains. To the north, Otter Creek has cut a forested canyon. To the south, there are the rolling ridges that surround Rock Creek. There are forests of Ponderosa pine, sugar pine, Douglas-fir, white fir and incense cedar with groups of black oak and madrone. This campground is about 15 miles west of Stumpy Meadows Reservoir.

Nearby Attractions

A nearby attraction is the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma, CA. This attraction is located about 16 miles southeast of Dru Barner Campground. It is where James W. Marshall discovered gold in 1848. This started the California Gold Rush. Historic building such as the blacksmith shop, mill workers cabin and the Coloma schoolhouse are available to see. There are gold panning demonstrations. There is a Gold Discovery Trail to learn the history and see the sites.

Fees

The overnight camping fee is $8.00 per vehicle per night. It has been reduced to $4.00 per vehicle per night due to the water system outage. The day use fee is $3.00 per vehicle. The group kitchen area fee is $1.00 per person .

Directions

From Auburn, CA, take Highway 49 south to the junction of Highway 193 and 49 in Cool, CA. Turn left onto Highway 193 east to Georgetown, CA. At the intersection of Main Street and Highway 193, turn left and continue on Main Street, which becomes the Wentworth Springs Road (County Route 63) for approximately 6 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 13N16 and proceed north for approximately 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 13N58 (also known as the Bottlehill Road) and travel west approximately 0.5 miles. The entrance Dru Barner Campground is on your left. From Placerville, CA, take Highway 49 north to the junction of Highway 193 and 49 in Placerville, CA. Turn right onto Highway 193 and head north to Georgetown, CA. At the intersection of Main Street and Highway 193, turn right and continue on Main Street, which becomes the Wentworth Springs Road (County Route 63) for approximately 6 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 13N16 for travel north for approximately 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 13N58 (also known as the Bottlehill Road) and travel west for approximately 0.5 miles. Our site had plenty of privacy. The site also had both open sun and plenty of shade. We hope to explore Trail A in the future.

Beautiful, quiet, and spacious. Nice tall fire rings and large trees everywhere. Mosquitos were pretty bad, bring bug spray!

Loved that Tyler came by and helped with the burn pass so we could use our stove. The bathroom was decent but was very very empty.

It’s a great campground for just hanging out and relaxing. I unfortunate that the campground has no running water. Hope in the future that it can be fixed. No toilet paper in either of the remaining restrooms over labor day weekend was also unfortunate for those who don’t bring their own toilet paper.

There was no water at the campground and I was unaware until I arrived. I didnt get an email or see anything about it when making the reservations. Besides that, the site was pretty clean and there weren't a ton of mosquitos or other critters. I was surprised by the lack of manure, which was great. Other than that, there wasn't much to do that was walking distance from the site. There are plenty of trees for shade though!

Pretty but insanely dry and dusty. I've never seen so many foxtails in my life! No water available as of August 2023. Surrounding forest is kind of scraggly - it looks like an area that has been previously logged and lacks biodiversity. Google maps will lie to you and try to send you down horse trails and fire roads to get here. If you're coming up from Georgetown, when you reach a fork in the paved road, take the left fork. The right leads to a helipad, not the campground.

The sites are all different but mine had a bear box, tables, and a fire ring along with a corral. I was just camping and it was a cute little spot. Unfortunately the water is turned off so there was no running water and all the bathrooms were closed. This would have been more of a problem if it was very crowded but I had nobody in any of the sites around me so I still had a great time.

This is quite campsite. While I was there it didn’t seem like a ton of people camp here. There was one other person when I arrived and they needed help with their car which I wasn’t successful. When I arrived I noticed a lot of trash and food scraps all around the camp, including a baby diaper, which made me more concerned about wild life approaching me and my dog at night. There are lots of trees and bush cover that made me concerned as well, but I just tried to keep the camp as tidy as possible. I noticed a lot of different scat around the camp too, so I was just trying to take as much precaution as possible, since I was staying in a tent. I had my eye on the weather and was originally camping for 3 nights. It was raining on and off. Though half way through the night I brought my glasses and resulted in packing my things and waiting for a friend to drive up and give me an emergency pair. I didn’t stay the rest of my reservation. I think this is a great place for a group of friends. The site I had 23, was pretty large. Gonna need to dig holes for potty breaks cus the bathrooms are locked.

Water not currently working at this campground, but other than that, our experience was excellent. Roads in were sketchy but we were fine in our 32ft travel trailer and truck. Bring everything you need because there’s only a few small quick marts in the nearest town. Large campsite, excellent internet and cell service. Silent at night and a lot of trails to explore.

This camp site is not good for families. Campsite was covered with tall grass, no parking area. Surrounding area was thick with trees. There was no camp fires allowed and nothing posted when making my reservation.

We’ve been here twice this year. First visit in Apr/May we saw a Ranger every day ( or almost) and he emptied the smaller garages. This time we didn’t any Rangers going thru and all the smaller garbage receptacles were full. Garbage truck came thru on Thanksgiving but I assume only was there to empty the dumpsters. Glad to see someone marked our site as RESERVED but the second site was not. I’d have been very disappointed if someone was occupying it

Dru Barner campground was very wooded and beautiful. The facilities were acceptable. There were a bunch of mosquitos (unfortunately) so keep the bug spray handy. When I went it was pretty vacant so I can't comment on what it might be like with a bunch of horses (manure?). Overall I would recommend the campground

The campsite is great and not very crowded. There are bear boxes and the roads are in good condition. Please be aware there are quite a few mosquitos in the area and one of the restrooms are currently closed do to the water not being potable.

Our campsite #31 is very beautiful with the trees. The road to the site was like driving in scary movie but it was an adventure lol. It was worth it!! Two trails close by. One of the trails behind our campsite. 2 Bathroom available and are very clean. No showers. Bring your own water. Water is available but I would not recommend to drink or bath in it. We will come again.

This has become such a great place to camp. Over the years, it's been quite scary with homeless people, abandoned vehicles, and seeing used needels, condoms and other really gross things. Thank you so much for cleaning things up and making this a camp that I can be comfortable to bring my family and children to and enjoy our beautiful forests!!

One of my riding groups does monthly campouts with potluck meals. It is difficult to share meals with individuals spread all over the dispersed camp grounds. Other trailheads have "group" reservations that allow 5 or 10 contiguous lots to be reserved with one reservation.

Lots of wasps but the water is cleared to drink. Plenty of shade and respectful neighbors. Sites are a bit sloped.
