Overview

Barber Cabin offers a remote lodging experience on the Eastern Kenai Peninsula of south-central Alaska. The rustic cabin has few amenities, but provides access to the great outdoors and a scenic mountain lake. There is great fishing in Lower Russian Lake, and hiking and biking trails abound. Wildlife viewing is good in the area as well, though visitors should watch out for bears.

The cabin can be accessed by hiking, biking, skiing, horseback or floatplanes. Visitors are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Recreation

Visitors enjoy boating and rainbow trout fishing on Lower Russian Lake. A rowboat with oars is provided at the cabin. Fishing equipment is not provided and permits are required to fish in the state (click here for Alaska Department of Fish & Game regulations). The lake freezes during winter months.

A variety of trails and unexplored areas exist near the cabin. Hikers and bikers can explore varying terrain, including muskeg, meadows and high-canopied forest along the 21-mile Russian Lakes Trail, toward the Upper Russian Lake Cabin. There is a high avalanche hazard on Russian Lakes Trail in the winter (learn about avalanche safety). Snow can remain on the trail until early June. Hunting is popular along the trail and in the surrounding area.

Facilities

The accessible log cabin has bunk space for six and a maximum occupancy of eight people. It is equipped with counter space, table, benches and a wood stove for heat. A splitting maul and hand saw are available. An outhouse is also provided.

There is no electricity, potable water, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils or cut firewood at the cabin. Visitors should bring sleeping bags and pads, a cook stove, cooking gear and food. Water taken from the lake should be treated or boiled before consumption.

Natural Features

The cabin is close to Cooper Landing off the Sterling Highway, in a fairly flat area on the east shore Lower Russian Lake. It is surrounded by a scattered spruce forest, and meadows with shrubs and brush, providing scenic mountain views.

A variety of wildlife make its home in the area, including moose, black and brown bears and wolves. The surrounding area has a particularly high concentration of bears. Fees

Reservations can be made the day of arrival or up to 180 days in advance, for three consecutive days maximum per person from May 15 to Aug. 31. Only one change per reservation for all Alaska cabins is allowed. Change is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation; after one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the current reservation and re-book the new dates. If you cancel a cabin reservation within 14 days of your scheduled arrival date, you will be charged the $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's recreation use fee. No-shows, early departures, or cancellations after the scheduled arrival date are not entitled to a refund. Cancellations for single night use for Alaska cabins will not be assessed a service fee.

Directions

At mile 52.6 of the Sterling Highway turn into Russian River Campground and travel 1 mile to Russian Lakes Trailhead, follow the Russian Lakes Trail 3.3 miles turning onto the Barber Cabin Spur trail at mile 2.5. The route is 4.2 miles in the winter and follows the campground entrance road, the summer trail for 1.8 miles, then a marked winter route and across the frozen surface of Lower Russian Lake. Via floatplane, the cabin is 25 minutes from Seward or Cooper Landing. Refer to USGS topographic map Seward B8. Maps are available online or by calling the Seward Ranger District at 907-288-3178. Winter travelers need to be able to evaluate avalanche and over-ice travel conditions. For current travel conditions, call the district office. Motorized access is prohibited year-round. Hands down our new favorite! Great spot for the kids. 3.5 mile easy walk. I don’t know how old this cabin is but it felt new and clean. Having the canoe there made this place really special. The boys had an amazing adventure in the Alaskan wilderness with that canoe while us girls painted on the beach. There are life jackets provided including one infant and one child size. We saw bear (at a lovely safe distance across the lake), moose, beavers, swan, tons of huge trout, mama loon with sooo many babies are nesting right near the dock. It was a magical experience. Cow parsnip is getting pretty overgrown but they even have tools in the shed to take care of it yourself. If any feedback it would be nice to have a few more kids life jackets but we were just happy there were any and we didn’t have to hike them in.

Barber Cabin was once again a cozy and accessible retreat. The saw and hatchet on site would help gather deadfall if needed, but we had hauled in enough firewood, with more left neatly at the cabin. Wood stove is great, with instructions in log book. Ice was thick and with little snow we enjoyed inspiring skating. Note that winter parking is before the bridge and could be better signed, but the trail is easy to find. We cleared some branches off the spruce fallen across the trail.

We both love this Lake and the cabin. Very peaceful to wind down. It has been 3 years or more that we had been there, very hard to get the reservation. The last time there the canoe was great, really wide and stable. Now the one that is there now is to small and very Tippys. Our last day there the lake was ruff and had white caps, could not go out before we hit the trail. We booked for 3 days but they were closing the park for road work Thursday night, so we missed a day. Still was a nice 2 day stay.

It's a very easy 3.5-mile hike from the Russian River campground trailhead on a wheelchair-accessible trail, about 350 feet of elevation gain. (If you have a cabin reservation, mention it to the people working at the campground entrance kiosk- your parking is supposed to be free.) The cabin and outhouse have ramps so it's a very low-effort way to get access to a Forest Service cabin. There's a canoe available for use, and there are paddles, life jackets, and cushions on site as well. The cabin has been recently renovated and spruced up so it's an all-around excellent camping experience. Fishing is reportedly good but we had no luck, but that probably says more about lack of effort and skill than anything else. We did have an interesting bear experience when a sub-adult brown bear came up as we were getting to sleep and put his paw on the window of the back door. Exciting! He then just wandered around the cabin for a few minutes before toddling off into the woods. Other than that, not much happened!

Beautiful scenery and an easy hike to get there. The cabin was clean, recently painted and refurbished with new windows. The canoe was a nice bonus and enjoyed paddling around the lake. We did not need the stove, but it is a nice feature for cooler weather.

Poor communication from recreation.gov, ended up getting a $360 fine for parking at the trailhead for an already booked reservation.

This cabin was very well kept by previous guests and is very roomy. Would sleep 6 nicely (four would be best ). The rowboat had not been secured well and had washed all the way down the lake and down the Russian River to its confluence with the Kenai River and so a new one is being ordered. That was the one disappointment, exploring the lake with the boat would have made it an excellent rating. But beautiful location and area.

Wood stove is in very good shape and needed to dry out after rain most of way in. Thankful for dry wood and kindling left by stove, we left as we found it. Winter trail very well marked.

We had a nice stay on a stormy new years eve. The cabin was generally good with the exception that the wood stove wasn't properly drawing air and it was tough to keep going. Also, the seal on one of the windows has gone bad and there was a very cold draft of air. Several previous visitors have mentioned these issues in the cabin logbook. For as much money as Chugach National Forest makes off the public use cabins, I've noticed that they generally provide surprisingly little attention to maintenance issues.
