Overview

Central Campground is a family-friendly primitive group campground found in the Platt Historic District of Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Nearby Travertine Creek provides several refreshing, spring-fed swimming areas to escape the summer heat. Other close attractions, such as Little Niagara and the Travertine Nature Center make this campground an ideal location for both beginner and experienced campers. Central Campground is only a few minutes away from the town of Sulphur.

Recreation

Swimming and hiking are among the favorite activities at the campsite. A short walk takes you to Panther Falls, a refreshing swimming area.

Nearby hiking and walking trails meander along streams, past cool rushing waterfalls, and on to mineral and freshwater springs.

Facilities

The group campground is on a loop that surrounds a spacious field for activities like volleyball, football or horseshoes. There are 10 group sites open seasonally, and water spigots are close to the campsites.

Natural Features

The springs and seeps in Chickasaw originate within a region of Oklahoma characterized by complex geologic formations. Intense faulting, folding, uplift and erosion have combined to form a land surface of gently rolling hills dissected by streams.

Nearby Attractions

Try Little Niagara, a favorite freshwater swimming hole.

The Travertine Nature Center is a wonderful resource to view nature exhibits, meet live animals on display, and listen to rangers' presentations.

The park's bison pasture is nearby, so bring the kids and cameras to see the beautiful animals grazing.

Central campground Group camp site 2 was perfect. Lots of green grass to play on, right by the bathrooms, easy access to the springs, and plenty of room for our group of about 20 to spread out AND huddle up around the fire. We saw deer, squirrels and even a giant red headed centipede! Cold springs is where we usually camp but in the future I think we’ll return to the group site. Tons of shade but also room for frisbee and football!

This was our thirteen year of camping one spot or another in the park, most years are at Central Campground site 2 & 3. The newer longer table are nice, fire ring is a little small for cooking for a big crowd. This year the grass was cut and nice, last year the grass was high, too high. Restrooms were serviced and worked well. No Showers in the Central Campground. Really close to Sulphur, five minute drive. The kids love the creek and it is walking distance to the Clift area. Rangers pasted through often, as did the park attendant. for groups of twenty to thirty it works well.

I have been using this spot for years now. This was the worst I have ever found the location, upon arrival for Memorial Day Weekend. I must say the new larger picnic table was very nice, Now the bad. the grass was unacceptable, way too tall, I paid a premium price for two spots, Central Campground site's 1 & 2, I expected to grass to be mowed, every one of my guest commented about the grass. It was bad. (Why?) the bathrooms for the most part was not good either, never saw a camp host, to complain. Still a lot of rocks in the camping area. With the higher rates I was expecting more. may have to find another campground for future camping.

The first night was great, nice and peaceful. The second night about 15 teenage boys and girls were running around yelling, this was after 10pm by the way, getting up on the roof of the bathrooms and the boys went into the ladies bathroom. We called and the park rangers came out and thought awesome this crazieness will stop and we won't have to worry about males hiding in the ladies room when the girls needed to use the bathroom....NOPE...we were told by the park ranger "there just playing hide and seek" So no big deal, basically if any of the females needed to use the restroom you had to make sure someone was with you because "there just playing hide and seek" Ridiculous!! That right there ruined my view of central campgrounds
