Coles Creek Campground

Overview

Coles Creek Campground is situated on the eastern shore of Carlyle Lake, a prime getaway for city-dwellers and families. Located 50 miles east of St. Louis and a few miles from the town of Carlyle, the area offers the peaceful retreat of a small town combined with the grandeur of Illinois' largest man-made lake.

Recreation

Coles Creek Campground provides fun both on the water and on shore. Boat ramps and courtesy docks are provided, and the vast lake allows for plenty of water sports. Fishing is a popular pastime, and the lake offers year-round varieties of fish such as bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, flathead catfish, white bass, largemouth bass, freshwater drum, carp and walleye. There are multiple playgrounds on-site, as well as a swimming beach and an amphitheater for educational programs. A multi-use biking and walking trail is located a short drive away at the dam.

Facilities

Coles Creek Campground offers 119 campsites and two group camping areas. Each campsite comes eqipped with electric hookups and provides a picnic area with picnic table and fire pit. All sites are either directly on the shoreline or a short walk to the lake. Modern amenities like showers and flush toilets are provided. The campground is adjacent to the Coles Creek Day Use Area which features a reservable picnic shelter, as well as a designated swimming beach with its own shower facility.

Natural Features

Created in 1967, the 26,000-acre lake is recognized as one of the nation's top ten inland sailing lakes and hosts several annual races and regattas.

Carlyle Lake is home to an array of wildlife that can be seen throughout the year. Its waters and shores are a resting spot for migratory waterfowl and other birds. There are six established Watchable Wildlife Sites with viewing towers open to the public around the lake.

Nearby Attractions

The Carlyle Lake Visitor Center, located in the Dam West Recreation Area, has information available and nature exhibits on display, including a 215-gallon aquarium with native fish.

The site was beautifully maintained. We didn't have any issues while we were there. My only concern is the lack of amenities. When you are tent camping with a heat index over 110, having to drive 30 min just for ice, is close to impossible. By the time you get back, the majority of it has melted. We believe that if they could get one of the individual ice kiosks on the property, they would gain more attention from campers. We didn't mind driving for firewood as that's a one time thing. However, you have to refill your ice daily when it's that hot outside. The lack was yucky on the bottom once you got so far out, but that's not something that can be controlled. Just make sure you have your water shoes.

Campground attendants were very nice upon arrival. Campgrounds was clean and showers were clean. The grass was a little tall but understandable as there has been plenty of rain. Going again in a few weeks.

Had site 121. Backs to the water with a good view. All day shade. Level from side to side with slope to the back had to come down 8 inches in the front but doable. Electric only. I camped in a 32’ 5th wheel and had tons of room could easily fit a much bigger rig. I believe it’s the best spot in the campground. The front loop is full hookups but most sites up there are full sun. Dump station on the way out but it’s only a one hole so it can get backed up waiting on others. Will return if in the area.

We were there a seven days with electric hook up only across the street from our site. Site nine was open the whole time. It is a full hook up site. I asked the camp host why side open wasn’t available and they said it was set up for whoops something went wrong so it’s a fall backside. I asked why wouldn’t they keep a fall backside electric goal and keep the full hookup sites available they didn’t know the answer to that.

Site 75 paved, slightly sloped back to front. Picnic table, fire pit (had been cleaned). Bathrooms very clean and well kept. Bathhouse was the same, modern and a whole single bathroom (toilet, sink, and shower) per room. Nice beach across the cove from campground, fee included with camping. Very busy (full) but very quiet and relaxing. It was great to see many families with kids of all ages. AT&T service was a couple bars of 5G, not sure of others.

The only thing I would like to see is better access to potable water for the camper. Make sure you have a long fill hose.
