Mound Valley

Overview

Mound Valley is located on the crystal clear Big Hill Lake in southeast Kansas.

The lake boasts three campgrounds, three equestrian trails and four day-use areas for the public to enjoy.

Camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking, swimming, fishing and other outdoor activities abound.

Recreation

Campers can venture onto several hiking and equestrian trails including Big Hill Lake Horse Trail, a 17-mile trail with a variety of terrain for all ages to explore. The trail winds along a scenic hardwood ridge that offers gorgeous views all along the way.

Big Hill Lake is known as a trophy lake for fishing. Principal species of sport fish include largemouth bass, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, bluegill, walleye and smallmouth bass. The lake is also popular for fishing tournaments.

Almost all of the land around the lake is open to public hunting, except for parks and areas around the dam and control structures. Principal species hunted are whitetail deer, turkey and squirrel.

Families with kids will enjoy visiting the sand-covered beach nearby for cooling off from the summer heat and enjoying a picnic.

Facilities

This facility has 85 campsites, including three group sites, one of which has a picnic shelter as well. Most campsites are on the waterfront; others are just a short walk away.

Other amenities include a boat ramp and boat trailer parking, restrooms, showers and a swim beach.

Natural Features

The park is nestled in the rolling, wooded countryside that is referred to as the Little Ozarks.

With thick oak-hickory forests surrounded by prairie and farmland, the lake shore supplies a variety of habitats for birds and mammals.

The camp sites were not mowed, trimmed or cleaned up. The showers and bathrooms looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. The play ground was gone in this loop?

Overall, I like the location of this facility and enjoy camping here. It was a little busy with people overflowing into the street with their camping activities but everyone seemed friendly. The only real issue I had was a lack of trash receptacles at the main bathrooms or anywhere convenient throughout the park. There are dumpsters near the dump station and there are trash containers at the swim beach; both of which are quite a ways away from the campsites. Also, it wasn’t clear when I booked my site that it didn’t have water. Apparently some sites have water and some don’t, even in the same area.

We camped one night in the Mound Valley area. We were right across from the showers & the rest rooms in #73. Lots of shade trees. The water and electrical hookups were conveniently located close by.

Love the Campgrounds but I’ve never seen such discussing bathrooms. You would think they could at least hose them out. A good power washing would be nice.

It was our first time at this lake and camp ground and we really enjoyed ourselves. We stayed on site #65. Our site was kinda off to itself with no one right on top of us which was nice. The grounds crew keep the area around your site clear but on areas not being camped it was kept natural which we appreciate and enjoy for the wildlife. The amount of birds around us was awesome and their songs drowned out everything else. It was beautiful. Unfortunately the first two days it rained hard so to step outside the camper you were going to get muddy. It was a challenge with our two fur babies. Day two we went into town and bought a couple bags of sand. We spread it across the ground so we could put our outdoor rug down so when we stepped out of the camper we didn’t sink. The sand did the trick and it was an easy fix. The rest of the week was great. It’s an older campground. The bathrooms were clean especially with the number of people that weekend. Showers had the push button faucets to save water so now way to adjust but it was a nice hot shower (not burning hot) the entire time. I think they are trying hard to upgrade the park. The spots could use some gravel to help with the mud but we made do. The park itself was spotless. The beach is very nice and clean. We went out on the lake with our kayaks and did some fishing. Very nice boat ramp area and parking. Lake was very clean. A little murky due to all the rain we had. Lake was well patrolled. We talked to the water patrol a couple time when they asked how things were going and they were super nice. Boats, jet skiers, pontoons and kayakers were all very respectful which made it enjoyable. Seen a lot of wildlife on and off which was great. We are definitely going back again and recommend it as a place to visit. Happy Camping!

We love the camp ground other than the rv parking areas need to be redone with asphalt and widening the areas to accommodate the new camper and to eliminate mud at the camp sites.

Our first trip to this lake. We initially stayed a MLOO campground. It was overgrown with weeds and the bathroom/shower house was outdated and unkept. We are in our 60’s and were unable to navigate the steep terrain and weeds down to the water’s edge. After a few days, we moved to SLOO campground, which was better manicured and shower house was better kept, but still had steep terrain and overgrown weeds down to the water’s edge. We were at both campgrounds during the week and it was quiet and peaceful.

Enjoyed the campsite and the views. My only complaint is that the only one of the 3 women’s shower heads worked very well, the locks on men’s and women’s shower doors didn’t work, and both the shower rooms and the bathrooms looked like they havebt been cleaned in years (except the actual toilets were surprisingly clean).

As we read the information for Mound valley we understood that there was Water and Electric at the sites we choose. This was not true as some sites had water and some did not. but all had electric. To me this information was not clear on your web site.

We were reserved in site #47 which would've been great for a TENT! We could NOT get our small trailer anywhere near a spot even close to level and ended up going home. The next day our friends called and said there was an empty spot quite a bit away from our group, but available. We booked it and drove back up, the site was nice...just not near our group. Wecouldn't find anybody at an office so we just cancelled our original site then reserved the new one. We only lost the one night, but probably wouldn't have happened if someone was manning the kiosk!

Some beautiful camping spots at Mound Valley! Very peaceful and serene. Good views of the lake as well. Probably the only drawback was the shower situation. No showers on our loop. Had to travel to another loop for a shower house. Otherwise very good stay

We camped in location #50 of the Mound Valley Loop. Good location with lots of shade. We camped Monday thru Thursday, so there wasn’t a lot of traffic which we really liked. We had electric and water hookups which was very convenient. Camp host staff talked with us and asked if we needed any help with anything. They were very kind and helpful. We had a great experience.

The campsites were very spaced out. This site specifically was a little sketchy to back into as it’s downhill and you have to back around a curve kind of, but once you’re in it’s great! I loved the multiple levels, and it has a little unofficial trail down to the water which was AMAZING. We were able to lay our baby down for a nap and still take the older kids to swim because we had a direct view of the camper and could be back to it within 30 seconds. The only downfall was that due to the multiple levels, there was no breeze near the picnic table area
