Red Canyon (Ashley National Forest)
Overview
Red Canyon Campground is located in a grassy meadow high above Flaming Gorge Reservoir in northeastern Utah along Red Canyon Road at an elevation of 7,400 feet. Visitors enjoy exploring the Red Canyon Rim Trail and canoeing and fishing at Greens Lake. ( THIS IS NOT THE RED CANYON IN SOUTHERN UTAH-_ THAT ONE IS NOT RESERVABLE.)
Recreation
Nearby Greens Lake offers great canoeing and fishing for rainbow and brook trout. Red Canyon Lodge sits on the shore. Canoe and bike rentals, horseback riding, a restaurant and gift shop are available.Red Canyon Rim Trail, for hiking and biking, begins at the nearby visitor center, which offers interpretive displays and area information.

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is known not only for its beautiful red cliffs, but also for its world-class fishing for lake, brown and rainbow trout. Boating, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and scuba diving are popular activities on the reservoir.Flaming Gorge Dam offers guided tours of the working hydroelectric plant and the dam itself; The adjacent visitor center contains area history exhibits.
The Green River below the dam provides spectacular rafting opportunities. A trip down the river offers unique geology, outlaw history and Native American rock art.

Great campsite. Level ground, some shade, excellent views, and easy access to trails and the Visitor Center. There are vault toilets in camp, but they are small and dark. The ones by the Visitor Center are larger, better equipped, and not much further away. Hopefully they can repair the water system, but for now there is no water in camp. Closest water is a mile or two down the road at the next campground. The Geology Loop drive is definitely worth a visit. Beautiful scenery. If you plan to shower at the nearby campgrounds that have showers, make sure to get a shower pass from the campground host. (The hosts were not on site; they were at Firefighters’ Campground when we were there).

Very exposed, right on top of the site next to it. Not as pictured on the outside of the loop towards the canyon, it’s actually inside the loop and only has a parallel parking space.

Beautiful area with great views and nice canyon over-look trail. Drive up from Vernal, Utah includes trailhead for Dinosaur Track Trail. Not an easy trail, but worth it to see actual dinosaur footprints preserved in stone. Although there were said to be hundreds of prints, we found only half a dozen, but still an unforgettable experience. Campground had no water, so be sure to bring what you need. Campground Host, Karen and husband were super nice, kind and welcoming.

Always love our time at Red Canyon. The camp host was exceptional in their oversight of the campgrounds - professional, friendly, thorough, and kind. The camp host deserves this great review for their job well done!

Nice low key small campground with 8 sites, lots of tents, camper vans, tiny trailers. Right near trails and rock scrambling. Really fun!

Campsite #2 was perfect for us in our Sprinter Van. It is very close to an amazing view of the gorge - a great cocktail & coffee overview. I do wish that the water was "on". The restroom was clean.

We loved staying here! The views are stunning and close by, like literally just a few hundred feet from the campsite. Very quiet and clean. Great hiking located nearby with even more excellent views!

This was our second time returning to the same camping spot, and will be back again. Love the quietness and proximity to the canyon. As a person who loves photographing nature, this spot is incredible!

Although the views were really good, the campground as a whole left much to be desired. It was extremely rocky which made it difficult to pitch a tent. We had to use rocks to anchor our rain fly as our nail tent stakes would not go in due to rocks. Our tent stakes went in on,y a few inches so we had to be careful not to trip over them. Also, there was no water at the campground so we had to go to a neighboring campground to fill our water jugs. Thankfully, we are somewhat frugal with water so we did not have to do this often. Last, the outhouses were unbelievably small and cramped. The door opened into the vent pipe and had we been larger people, it would have been uncomfortable. It is not surprising that there were only two sites filled.

This campground is beautiful and spot 002 is definitely the prime location. Sunrise and sunset are both incredible from the site! I like that the campground was small. I can't wait to stay here again.

Really really beautiful! Also very secluded when I visited (the weekend prior to Labor Day weekend) I was the only other camper in my loop. I love how the site comes close to the canyon rim. It's an easy hike to get a spectacular view! The fire pit was perfect for cooking and the bathrooms were only a short walk away. There were dumpsters to throw away trash before leaving. This site is a new favorite of mine!

Nice hiking and great views but we had a yellowjacket nest at the sight. Spacing was a little tight and campground road could use work.

This is a beautiful campsite. We were there early in the season, and were the only ones there. Our site (02) was only only steps from the edge of the magnificent Red Canyon, and a short walk to the Visitor Center, which has viewing platforms at the most dramatic vistas. A flat trail goes along the canyon edge--one mile to the next campground (Canyon Rim), and beyond to Red Canyon Lodge. Water spigots are scattered around the campground, but there is only one pit toilet location in the middle of the CG (with two single toilets).

The view of the Flaming Gorge from Red Canyon campground is spectacular. We’ve come three years in a row and will keep coming back. Rafting the Green River at Dutch John is also a highlight.

A quiet campground (just a few tent campers on a June weeknight) and a truly memorable view. It was a good camping experience for our family of four including two kids under 10. Would repeat.

We had a great stay at Red Canyon. We stayed one night but wished had time to stay longer. Views were gorgeous even with the smoke haze. We saw sheep crossing the road on the way in. Campground was very quiet as it was nearly empty. Had a fun day rafting on the river the next day.

This is a beautiful campsite! Room between each site, not crowded and great views! Our site was steps away from the canyon and trail to walk the rim. Would highly recommend this campsite! We will definitely be returning here!

Had site #5, very private on a Sunday evening. Lots of wildlife passed through. While the pit privy was clean it really needs to be replaced. Vetilation system does not work.

We had a reservation but some guys took our site as there was no sign saying the site was reserved.
The information board at the entrance to the campground had no emergency contact information and there was no on site campground host.
A visitor center volunteer helped us reach the campground host named Jordan.
Jordan was helpful in resolving the matter. There was a large wedding in one of the campgrounds that day and it appears that Jordan had more work than one person could handle. We were not the only ones having this issue. This all took place after hours.
The bathroom was clean.
The campground was nice and quite but seemed expensive for the amenities{vault toilet and water}.

Reserving a site at this location is not a guarantee that you will get one. People show up and disregard reserved signs- and there’s nothing you can do. My advice is get there early afternoon to get a site or just camp out on BLM land.

We stayed for a night at campsite #2. The location on the campground is almost unbeatable - beautiful scenery and right next to a breathtaking overlook of the Gorge. Campgrounds seemed well spread out, and there was running water available. tables and fire pits were nice to have and in good condition. We spent part of the day paddleboarding at a small lake right up the road as well. Only downside was that the main canyon overlook trail went right by our campsite, so during the day there are a good amount of people walking by. But worth it imo for the location and price, no issues at night.

Pretty awful. The campsites are incredibly close together. There's zero shade, so bring a canopy of some kind. Some of the sites are next to a small cliff. There was one tiny restroom for the entire campground. There are so many places that are great in Ashley NF. This is not one of them.
