Natural Features

Robert S. Kerr Reservoir is located within the Cookson Hills, on the Arkansas River in Sequoyah, Le Flore, Haskell, and Muskogee counties in eastern Oklahoma, US. First time there since new hosts. Apparently the host were gone on vacation, but no sign on their camper to let anyone know. The mowing has got worse with tall grass. It was Fourth of July weekend and the loud music was bad and no one to control it. I heard someone notified the sheriff department to help. Bathroom is not as clean as before. Heard other campers had electrical issues as well. Hopefully when the host is there, it will be better, but this was our worst experience.

We are frequent campers at Applegate and have been for many years. We are happy to see some of the lot upgrades but the bathrooms could use some help. I have cleaned them up myself including the toilet. We are really unhappy that we can no longer camp through the winter months due to them shutting down the last 2 years.

I understand they were closing that week but the sites looked poor. No effort to remove leaves and fallen branches. Fire ring not cleared either.

The campsites on the side we were located were pretty small and the road through the park isn’t well marked or well situated. We had to back up once because there was no way forward. Otherwise the place is very pretty and the grass is well kept. We love COE’s and would always recommend!

No signage to, or at the entrance. No directional signage inside the campground, causing multiple campers to get rigs in binds turning around. No entrance gate, or staff. Trees in the campground and at the external dump station need trimming. Poorly located dumpsters (of the three, one is at the boat ramp, another in the playground, the third far from any camp sites. Camping pads were not cleaned, with much debris built up. Locals enter for boat ramp, too many vehicles per site. Vehicles drive the wrong direction on one way lanes. Narrow lanes blocked by boats on trailers and large trucks. Little or no cell service. Limbs blocked view exiting the dump station. The dump inlet is elevated too high above the ground. Open utility cuts in the pavement have not been patched. Many new water spigots, most very poorly located and several barely operable.

Nice small campground with pretty views of the lake. Not very crowded in mid October. Some spots are small but several are a nice size and have been redone. Very quiet.

We arrived a little before sunset. I had a hard time finding the "swimming beach" but afterwards I realized where it may have been. The campground was very quiet. The bathroom with the showers was very clean, but the bathroom close to the boat launch was downright gross. For an overnight stay, the park was good.

Park needs attention. Main bath house is filthy. Toilets near boat dock are unusable and probably haven't been used in years. Our campsite was pathetic. Trash on site, in need of mowing. Playground needs repair, basketball goal bent, 2 of 4 swings broken and volleyball net torn apart. Another concern is the heavy traffic in aand out during day, there were groups coming in using the bathrooms and leaving, not campers. This is just sad... We did what we could to pick up trash and hose down our site. This isthe WORST kept USACE property we have ever visited. Suggest trying to get groups of volunteers to repair and tidy up park. It's a nice location, but needs TLC.

The park itself was beautiful. It looked like they were making improvements. A lot of the pads were replaced. The roads needed to be repaved. They have water and electric but like most people said, the water was like an afterthought. Most of them are so far from the rv that unless you have 2 hoses you can't use them. Luckily we had a regular hose and a heated hose so we were able to put them together and use the water spigot. The weather wasn't ideal while we were there but we were able to take some nice walks around the camp. The lake was pretty but too choppy to paddleboard. One of the bathhouses was fairly clean but the other restroom was really gross. The dump station was about 300 yards outside the park entrance on the left as you were leaving. It was a little tight but worked. Overall, a nice park but needs a little love.

Our experience was not what I had hoped based on previous reviews. FYI: we drive a Class C Tiffin Wayfarer (26’) and tow a Jeep Wrangler 2-dr (14’). To be fair, it was our last stop on our way home to Kansas from Florida. After a longer day than usual of driving, we arrived after dark. We came up 59 from the south. I wish now we had considered taking Interstate 49 farther north and dropping down to the park from the north. Thankfully though, there was no closed gate in our path. We had the campground map up and Google was displaying our location. We drove very slowly looking for directional signs and site locations. We saw the “lower” campground area (passenger side and sites in the 20s) and noticed more sites immediately on the other side of the road (driver side and sites in the teens). We had chosen Site 12 so continued on the main road. We reached the road we thought was correct and it clearly stated “do not enter”. We had seen cars exiting down towards us so we thought it was a one-way loop and the entrance was ahead. We proceeded very slowly and wound up executing a U-turn in a very tight and unlevel ground area. We headed up the road that said not to enter and at least parked out of the way. My husband disconnected our Jeep and went back to the entrance trying to find where we belonged. He could not so we pulled into the closest site to us. It was site 8 and was wonderfully-level concrete. There was a large raucous party going on at the base of the hill or we might have asked questions. We set up, turned on the AC to block the noise, and crashed. In the morning, we poked around a bit. Area does look lovely and we might revisit. Still unable to find any directional signs though and the dumpster was absolutely overflowing. This was a Tuesday evening so would have expected weekend trash to be gone.

Overall park was in good shape however the assistant camp host site number 14 was very trashy rv, extra cargo trailer, three vehicles one of which looked like it wouldn’t run besides all the crap chairs freezer overgrown flower pots pile old blankets laying on the ground. This is a really nice spot #14 but allowing the caretaker to keep the site in this condition sets a negative message

This was our first visit to Applegate Cove as we were traveling across country with our new 5th wheel. Most of the sites are large and easily accessible. There is plenty of room to maneuver a large RV into into the sites. Water and electricity (50amp on many) were good. The campground is well laid out with quite a bit of space between sites. Only issue is low hanging limbs. COE needs to trim many overhanging the interior roads because they will scratch your rig. The lake is beautiful and there is a boat ramp and plenty of parking. We enjoyed our stay and will return

The camp host was absolutely the kindest. I didn't know there was an issue with a water leak on the property and the water to the showers was shut off to allow the ground to dry so they could bring in the big equipment to make the repairs. It started raining while I was there and knowing the ground wouldn't be dry any time soon, he went ahead and opened the showers for the 2 days I was there. I was much appreciated.

We had a great time. Loved our spot #27 The only complaint was the water hook-up was in a weird spot to the camper. It was also a little too far from the camper hookup. That is the only thing. We made it work and had an amazing time. We will be back.

Apple Gate is our favorite place to camp and we will continue to stay there in the future however, the camp host have allowed druggies to stay without paying and we had to take a different spot one night due to these people having our site occupied. We stayed the weekend of Nov 4th and the weekend of Nov 10th. The little trash can in the restroom near the camp host had still had the same trash in the can on the 10th as was on the 4th. There was only a small amount on one roll of toilet paper and the other four rolls were empty. This is a great site but the camp host is completely neglecting their job duties. I do not ever write reviews or surveys but these issues along with other unmentioned issues have forced me to report them needing to be addressed.

Stayed for a few days in level site(6). Water was to be shared with neighbor site, so why am I paying full price. Pretty stupid. Dump station is quarter of mile outside of campground. Main bathhouse is vented and clean. Lots of mature trees made for a great stay. Kerr lake was amazingly beautiful. Didn't get to fish this time but will be back. Booked online so I couldn't change site. There are a few that don't share water and are level. Probably will do first come first serve next time.

We really enjoy going to Applegate Cove campground when we have time to go that far. Loved our spot except we got worried when the storm and wind came in because of all the dead branches in the tree above us. Bathrooms were always clean. Love this campground and will be back for sure. We are close enough to do a day trip to Ft. Smith and on another day, Fayetteville.
